The Best Organic Fertilizer for Plants (Part 1) | It's Free and Urine is Full of Nutrients!

I'm completely amazed with the results of this organic fertilizer. It's the best fertilizer I've ever used on my plants and also the cheapest. I'm never looking back. Urine is full of nitrogen as well as other nutrients for growing plants and it's free. The npk ratio of urine is 10-1-4 and it just so happens that urine is completely sterile when it comes out of your body so it's not quite as gross as a lot of people think. Give this a try and be completely amazed with the results!

Man, I am so stoked you made this video and are getting more people used to the idea. I grew up in the german biodynamic scene, so using urine as fertilizer was an integral part of my childhood. One thing I would like to point out is that in your situation there, your plants are heavily nitrogen depleted because of all those fresh wood chips pulling nitrogen out of their environment to fuel their decomposition. Even with the cow manure underneath it, what you had there was likely just too fresh of a situation to properly feed the plants. Fresh wood chips (as in under 6 months old) should not have direct contact with the root systems of young plants, they will totally suck those plants dry. Peeing on that really helped fix that nitrogen and general nutrition issue for you in that particular situation. BUT, directly peeing on a plant is a pretty bad idea in most cases, where you don't have a massive carbon reservoir sucking up all that heat. If you pee directly on a zucchini plant that is planted in soil, especially a soil that is relatively low in organic matter, the urine will cause massive damage to the plant's root biome (because of the high amounts of water soluble nitrogen). Woody plants tolerate that damage much better than annual veggies & herbaceous plants, but it is generally not a great idea to use urine undiluted. What we do at our place is use most of our urine to nitrogen charge our wood chip piles before we use them as mulch. High carbon compost piles or Hugelcultures are also a good place to pee on. For direct plant fertilization, we mix urine with water, blossom tea and wood ashes, in a way that the urine is diluted at a minimum of 10:1. Blossom tea is blossoms from certain plants blended in water, let sit for a few hours, then strained and the water gets diluted and used as fertilizer. You want to use relatively young blossoms that recently opened, not the old ones that look all sad. We mostly use dandelion, daisies, cat's ear and yarrow in quantity, but also other blossoms of non-resinous plants. The tea is high in phosphorous, but the main reason to make it is that it is very high in certain plant hormones that give it a similar effect to kelp in regard to immune support and growth stimulation. Sometimes I add some young horsetail shoots to it for extra silica and fungal defense. So, blossom tea, plus urine, plus wood ashes, that liquid fertilizer mix is the complete bomb. I like to dissolve my wood ashes in water, because otherwise most of it just blows away. Another thing we do that completes the nutritional picture as far as free fertilizer is concerned is that we char our left over bones (the way you would make biochar), which causes the bones to become so brittle you can easily crumble them in your hand. It is easy peasy bone meal, supplying more phosphorus and higher levels of calcium and magnesium than any of the other things used so far. Besides that, we do vermicompost in high carbon bins and use a considerable amount of biochar in our worm bins. The worm bin charged biochar is the bomb as far as slow release fertilizer and microbiome reservoir is concerned. But you really only want to do that with high carbon, high air flow worm systems, otherwise the microbial spectrum won't be right for the plants. Anyway. Sorry for the novel. But free ways to provide complete plant nutrition is kinda my thing. One of the major concepts of biodynamic farming is to NOT by outside fertilizers. I still sometimes do, but only very specific stuff and in small quantities. It is crazy how complete of a fertilizer you can produce on your own. Of course it is all labor, but once you have a system in place it really isn't bad. It only adds a few minutes to our routines. Now, I like to also go onto our pond with a little boat and fish the algae and duckweed out of there to use as fertilizer. THAT is too much labor. And so gross. It's kinda fun though. And especially the algae is very liked by ailing plants.

So I watched this video about a month ago and since this was my first year growing veggies and obviously our soil was very poor because everything was suffering to the point of nearly dying. I started saving all our large yogurt containers and placed them in each of the bathrooms, instructing my 5 kids that, if they wanted homegrown veggies by the end of the season they better start collecting! We've been eating the sweetest snow peas, tomatoes and cucumbers I've ever tasted! You're not crazy, you're just smart. We've gone so far away from what comes naturally!

And use it on most your crops, but maybe avoid the leafy greens..😉

@@MikeKincaid79 What if you just by peeing on that one plant the wood chips underneath break down better with all the abundance of nitrogen in the pee and the plant is feeding on that broken decomposed material better than the other 3 that are just waiting till wood chips underneath them break down naturally slower without enough nitrogen so it sucks out the nitrogen from the soil and then there is not enough for the plant itself. Hence slower weaker growth.

GREAT to see young people picking up on what we oldies used before industry and supermarkets, nurseries etc. In the times before town sewerage, we used human waste, [ everyone as we all grew our own food] and we rotated crops, we buried the contents of the can, and it took about a year to fill that plot, We waited a few years for vegies, but used almost immediatly on flowers. Never spent a penny on fertilizers etc, used what nature provided. We still have the old style inside potties with lid which makes it easy to collect now... GREAT TO SEE ENJOY

Now I need to learn about chrysanthemum - 'mum' I think you call them.. My front garden is Hotch Potch, and the wind and birds bring in all sorts of different flowers. Didnt realise they were Mums, till I took a huge bunch of the pink upto my mum... and the other was and awesom yellow but on 1 stem and 3 flowers, so trying to propogate that one... Should check and see if you have a vid on that one.. Enjoy, I love air-layering, and that is what I have done on my Rhodedendrum which was planted on this block in 1940, and it is beautiful, starts off pink then changes to pure white, looks like snow for a couple of days then gone... Mike Kincaid using urine is fine but as most Americans age they start taking a multitude of medications. You shouldn’t be using your urine if your on medications so an alternative is urea fertilizers. I don’t urinate directly on my plants because I have caused blooms to fall from excess nitrogen all at once. Instead I use urine to speed up my compost pile.

Hi Mike, of course it works! BUT! I would sure warn against using urine when people have diseases that require taking regular medication, because you don't want the residues of antibiotics or other medication, e.g. against heart diseases, high blood pressure, contraceptives etc in your edibles. So what you are suggesting may work perfectly for healthy young people; I have my doubts that it is a good idea when people are not as healthy as you probably are. Have an awesome day, Mike

I live in a little hick town in Alabama. People seldom know what organic even means, which is why I try to grow my own. I beg people on Facebook to recycle and save me their used coffee grounds, eggshells and other things that could be recycled and salvaged in a garden's compost. I've even offered people plots of land for free if they would just come start themselves a garden (I have about 3 lots of land on my property, so I am planting fig trees and such since I can't garden the whole thing.) I've talked about starting free classes on gardening and composting, but....nobody wants to "work" around here, not even if they could come to a class for free with free refreshments or have the use of a plot of land for a garden. But that's okay. I'm the little red hen. I will do what I can and eat my own food when I can. Blueberry bushes are next on the planting list. Figs are my favorite though. I joke and tell people I am sitting outside on the ground with a bib on....waiting. One of my fig trees is FINALLY fruiting and it's giving me about 1-2 figs a week. Those are happy days when I get a fig! I have an appt. with a food bank on the 7th which usually gives me about 28 loaves of moldy bread and a lot of expired cans of green beans, but every now and then there will be some oranges or something. And some of it can be composted. I was over the moon the last time I went and got those oranges. They were in date still and delicious, very sweet, and the skins got composted. Yay! I started to make some orange zest but my grater got destroyed (don't ask) and I haven't gotten a new one yet. I could have frozen them, but a grater is about #3020 on my list of things I need immediately so I figured I would never get around to making orange zest. LOL I do have an apple tree that I will box up apples and take around and share with people, but it hasn't borne any fruit in a while or the squirrels eat them all and I mean ALL of them. The apples are very hard, green and tart and I don't like them so I figure if the squirrels want them, maybe they will leave my figs alone. I have put mesh around my figs though. Those are off limits, even to my favorite friends since it's not bearing good yet. Not that anyone has asked for any figs. Most people around here just want things from the grocery store. One friend did ask me to make her some fig preserves though. At the rate my fig tree is going, I would have to freeze every fig for two years to get enough for one half pint of figs. I can't wait until the figs start bearing for real! And I'm looking forward to getting a couple of blueberry bushes. Hoping by spring I will be able to get a couple....or even harvest the seeds from some blueberries if I can get people to stop throwing away produce they buy and don't eat. Actually, it's not just people in this little hick town who are lazy. I used to live in Tampa and one time when I had come up here to visit my folks, Daddy sent me home with about 50 bags of fresh picked pecans. Daddy could look at something and it would grow prolifically. When I took all those pecans to work, my co-workers got extremely angry with me. They had been looking forward to those free pecans, but....I hadn't cracked them all and picked the fruit out for them.......sigh. "What are we supposed to do with THESE?" they said of the pecans Daddy had picked off his trees. It was close to Thanksgiving and I said, "Make pecan pies?" but no.....they weren't shelled so I ended up giving them to another co-worker who didn't mind working and picking the fruit out. I had to buy her a nutcracker and accoutrements though. No good deed goes unpunished. LOL Sorry for the length of this post. I just woke up early and got on the computer. Had to watch a gardening video or.....ten. :)

I applied 2L of diluted urine to my lawn, just this afternoon. Apparently urine starts developing Ammonia after 24 hrs, so needs to be used asap! ...yep it started to develop a pong! Being diabetic, I have an ample supply! I wonder about trace elements etc...but I guess growing in soil, it will take a while for an imbalance to occur?

I think it depends on the soil. I'm in Florida where the soil in most parts of the state is mostly sand. Dog pee doesn't seem to kill grass or plants here because it just runs through and spreads out so quickly in the sandy soil. In soil that holds lots of moisture in place it will likely do harm. My dogs pee all over my yard and it doesn't kill any plants or ever smell of dog urine. When I lived in NY I could never get away with that because the soil is clay based there and high in organic matter, holding lots of moisture right in place.

My family use Urine and wood ash as Fertilizer for more than 25 years ago when the Chemical Fertilizer not around much yet. I think we should use Urine to fertilize our plants because we know exactly what we are going to eat and what we feed to those plants instead of whole bunch of chemical putting in our body. Love your Video.

Oh, Mike! The comments have me rolling!!! Thank you for this video- Years ago, my neighbors were drinkers- and this led to wonderful cookouts and gatherings- so much fun to recall those memories- but I remember telling the guys (who often relieved themselves in shady corners of the yard during the festivities) to direct themselves to my compost pile! They LOVED the idea though they probably thought I was just a crazy garden lady!! LOL But soon, everyone knew that when they were in my yard (which the festivities often spilled into) they peed in the compost, even the new comers! My garden was enormous and bountiful all through the growing seasons, and made for some long lasting memories. I do have a question though- as I consider alternative application. At this point, I live in an apartment, but I have a lovely little container garden outside my window. My personal rationale is to collect the urine and then use it as a dilutant into a gallon container? I'm also fond of reusing containers and use a gallon milk jug with holes in the cap as a personal sprinkler- works beautifully. It seems like it would make it go further too. What are your thoughts?

If you like it then do it. Personally, I like to just dump it around the roots.

The wood chips are sucking the life out of those plants. They in fact leach nitrogen out of the soil as they break down. Study up on this. Am a horse farmer and after years of spreading manure/wood shavings on my fields, I stopped after learning the process is counter productive. Wood chips act good as a mulch, holding moisture and adding heat to the roots, but you need to add fertilizer in order to offset effect of undigested wood.

The chips do sequester some nitrogen and other nutrients in the first year. You just need to add a bit more fertilizer. By the second year the moist under layer is of chips are breaking down, adding carbon, trapped nitrogen and other nutrients. Plus it’s the perfect substrate for mycorrhizae. If you’re urinating on it, you’re adding far more nitrogen than the wood chips can absorb.

@oldbab I bought a house on a steep slope and my “soil” was nothing but gravel and rocks, done large rocks. I had an irrigation company come look at installing an irrigation system and they said there is no way to dig and Zhavia rock. So, I started having the city drop off truckloads of free wood chips and they really were working in my area. I started spreading the wood chips several inches thick covering my entire yard. I was eager to start planting so for perennials I would create a 3’ by 3’ mound of raised rich soil and plant my perennial. For shrubs and trees we had to work hard to dig wide and deep holes to fill with good soil around the new tree and shrub. Basically, I have been following the Back to Eden gardening method. You would not believe the resuLtd. I have my own personal and beautiful garden of Eden in my backyard now. Go, wood chips! You rock!
