Mine was about 75 ft away. So what I did, was get a direct burial line. 6/3. Ran them to a weather proof junction box. Used some polaris taps and ran three thhn wires from junction box through conduit to the charger. Torqued everything to specs. I am not an electrician, but I have worked with things like this before. .It wasn't that hard of a job. The hardest part was getting the wire into the panel. Had to cut a hole in my wall and patch it back up. Didnt really want to do that, but really had not other option.

Paid $800 for install of NEMA 14-50 Directly next to breaker box. Seemed like a lot of $. Bought camco extension cord for garage and for travel. Waiting for Tesla mobile charger to come back in stock to keep in car. Buying adapters for travel too. Thank you as I keep learning daily the best practices for Tesla life!

Great video. Thanks. I have the wall charger and it works great. I do the same with my provided portable charger. I also purchased the multiple plugs so I can charge on the road. Regarding the rate of charge, it will not go above 11.5 KW with a Model 3. The max amps for a model 3 is 48 and with 240V of power you will get 11.5KW of input to your M3. It stays fairly consistent through the full range of charge.

Thank you for the video. I calculated a theoretical supply line drop of 10.838 volts VAC at 48A for a power loss of 520.224W. At $0.10 kW/hr that's $0.052/hr when charging at 48A or about a nickel per hour of power loss or about 4.5% of the electrical power is being waisted by resistance in the electrical supply line turning it in to heat. These calculation are derived from the car measurements shown at 4:34 ( 237VAC 17A, 230VAC 48A). The theoretical no load voltage is 240.838 VAC with a supply line resistance of 0.2258 Ohms. This is lumping in any additional current being used by other electrical devices in the house showing up in between the breaker box and the electrical power company distribution transformer as a constant resistance and to get very theoretical out to many many decimal places all the way back to the power company generator. There are two reason for wanting to know what is going on as far as supply line voltage drop and power loss: 1) For fast charging you want the highest allowable voltage delivered to the car. 2) Any voltage line drop from the your power meter to the load is electrical power you are paying for, but simply waisting as heat providing no useful service. The way you might improve this is to lower the effective supply line resistance by increasing the wire gauge from your breaker box to the Tesla charger and increasing the power company electrical service capacity lowering its resistance. The car probably lists the no load voltage before starting charging, but we don't know the location of these voltage measurements. It might be at the Tesla charger. It might be at the car after the voltage drop of the Tesla charger cables. A simple way to find out what your supply line power loss is from your breaker box to the Tesla Charger is to record two voltage measurements at the Tesla charger connection with the house wiring. 1st voltage measurement is done with the charger off (the no load measurement) next voltage measurement is done with the car at full normal charge. You don't want other house electrical loads to change in between taking the two voltage measurements because that would have the effect of changing the voltage at the breaker box. Subtract the voltage recorded during charging from the no load voltage. This is your supply line voltage drop between the breaker box and the Tesla charger. Multiply the voltage drop by the charging current listed on the car's display to get your supply line power loss in watts. Divide the watts by 1000 to get the power loss in kW and multiply that by your cost per kW/hr. In the suburbs of Indianapolis its $0.10 kW/hr. Your cost per kW/hr is listed on your electric power bill. This answer will tell you how much money per hour you're waisting in your house wiring when charging your car. I don't know if the Tesla charging system will make use of the extra power typically assumed you'd get from having a 240VAC supply instead of 230VAC supply. It may be regulating to a certain power level in watts relatively independent of small charges in supply line voltage. Charging with 48A at 240V, 11,520 Watts is more charging power than charging with 48A at 230V, 11,040 Watts or maybe you're a bit hot with 48A at 250V, 12,000 Watts. If the Tesla charging system did increase power for an increase in supply voltage then people might be seeing how high a supply voltage it could comfortably take in order to get maximum charging speed. Reasonably an electrical device designed for 240VAC should be able to be OK at somewhat higher voltage, it has to be for safety reasons. For example 250VAC should be perfectly reasonable. There are variable transformers to change supply voltages that can both lower or raze the voltage from the mains. ( How I derived the theoretical supply line no load voltage and resistance: I graphed out the voltage and current as X and Y points, drew a straight line connecting the points and continuing to where it crossed the the X-axis. This was the theoretical zero current no load voltage. I then derived some simple proportional mathematics to calculate the theoretical value. I didn't use typical electronics formulas or processes because I didn't remember them. 48-17/237-230 = 17/V where no load voltage is = 237 + V. Solve for V. )

*Free home charger hack(lives in California)* 1-Buy a Tesla charger 2- go to Home Depot, Get a 60 amp breaker with wires 3- have the electrician to just install the amp 4- Finnish the job and save 800 bucks 5- file for level 2 charger and install rebate ($500+$300) 6- collect your check and bam. Extra tip if you have 2 Teslas like our house and send the second receipt of another Tesla charger and return it the next day lol and that’s how we got back $1,600 and paid only 600 for getting the whole thing installed with Tesla 3 charger.

Guys, I got my Tesla on March 21st 2020. Smack when Corona Virus hit us and a day before everything closed down. Now, I am not driving much during the corona times. Just errands on weekends. A drive here and there just coz I am bored and thaz about it. Now during this time, I am charging through my regular outlet (120v). Its the slow charger since its the reg outlet and it works perfectly for me for now. I am not sure how its going to be when I start going to work. I will have to drive about 30 minutes to the train station everyday and of course back from the train station to home. I am guessing even then, the regular outlet charging should be okay. I have also heard that slow charging is better than fast charging for the battery. I am not an expert, however it does make sense since the injection of electricity to the battery will be slower hence better for the battery health. So, if you can avoid charging the car via the fast charger, please try and stick to the regular outlet charger. Overnight charging should help with regular driving. Cheers!!

I'd use the time you have now to install a 100A sub panel a couple feet away from where you want your charger and then connect the two. This give you an on/off switch right at the charger and an easy option to install a secondary 14-50 Amp socket in the same area. 1-gauge wire is good for 115A intermittent according to electrical code and should pay for itself in saved lost energy compared to using smaller higher resistance wire.

My dryer plug uses a NEMA 14-30 plug. Maybe not the norm.

In my case, and for those that also have a 100 amp panel and don’t want to spend extra money to upgrade it, they will install it on a 40 amp breaker that will charge at 32 Amps or approx 8kw/hr. This is more than sufficient to charge my daily use within 2.5-3 hrs overnight (I drive 40-60 miles per day on avg).

You'd get better electrical service if you were to upgrade to a normal 200A service. When our family added an addition we through we needed a higher level electrical service, so we told the electric power company we were planning on adding a hot tub and they put the 200A service in for free. Afterwards we didn't get the dimming of lights when the A/C turned on. Now I'm assuming the upgrade to the electrical service was only to 200A and not higher. You might go out and look at your wires and compare their visual diameter to those going to larger house. I'm assuming they'd be hung rather than underground. We did all the interior electrical work ourselves including a lot of upgrades to the original house. I remember installing a sub 100A electrical panel in the new addition and connecting it to the main electrical panel, but that means the original breaker box would have had to be around 200A for it to have space for everything we put into to it and supplying electricity to the 100A sub panel. All the electrical work passed inspection. The house was originally built in 1964 with central A/C. It would of just scraped by with a 100A service.

13:08 "A lot of people could do this themselves..." Not to be a stick in the mud here but ..... Warning from an electrical engineer: 1. The amount of power you're dealing with on the rails of the circuit breaker box is mind blowing. One tiny misstep and you will almost certainly die. It's not at all like getting shocked from a plug, for example. Think 100 times that. 2. Most municipalities require that any messing about with the circuit breaker panel requires a city inspection and if the inspector finds out that a licensed electrician did not do the install they will force you to get that done to be in compliance and might fine you as well. 3. If your house has an electrical fire and your insurance company finds out that your did such an install, it's possible that they will not pay out the insurance (read the fine print for your house insurance).

I would totally buy the GenII and keep it in my trunk. I installed three heat pumps at my house as well as a 240v air compressor. The wiring is pretty much the same. Very easy!

Oh and when my hot water heater caught on fire because the Home Depot installer used wire nuts made for lamp shade wire and the 10g wire started arching, sitting the box on fire until the wire burnt through, I was able to open that and rewire that with the PROPPER wire nut.

The max power for your car on AC is 11KW and it is a hardware limitation (on-board charger maxed out).

Out the box suggestion If you can manage the adaption a three hundred o alternator . Applied to a rotating source like scientific aproch alternator and a three thousand watt inverter charge as you drive . In Tesla to many sensors but the electric trucks and bikes endless charge on the go .Turn your mile rating froma thirtish max to endless giddy up powered movement . Gonna build one . A total on the fly charging unit in an e bike no bounds freedom of endlesovement yes. Peace bro . Put that in you pipe and light it . Talk about a after market get paid attachment right . I like the wand better on the silver one as well over the signature series. It has a gloss protection on the handle. The ss doesn't have any protection. Easy scratched if you have a ring or if you drop it

I would need more information. Is your apartment in a nice enclave with low foot traffic? Did you get permission from owners? As a public walkway it's common sense sidewalk must be kept free of obstruction. If a child trips on your cord and knocked their teeth out, who would be liable? It's probably illegal, but to be honest it really depends on specifics of your location.

Yes, it's a Chargepoint charger. It's about 200v at 6kW, so I can fully charge within 6 hours. I work long hours, so it's always ready by the time I take my lunch break.

Scalpers are selling the NEMA14-50 adaptors for 3x the price on Amazon and for as much as $349.99 on EBAY. Downright Criminal. They are out-of-stock on Tesla site.

about $100?!?! Not sure where you're from but I literally don't know of an electrician that will even show up for less than $120! Thats his guaranteed for the first hour if they do any work or not. That also doesn't include any materials. So around $120 for the first and $90 for any additional hours. If you have a friend or relative you might get under $100 depending on how much beer you provide!

In Europe we have a 230v grid and my M3 LR lets you charge at 13A for a total of 3Kw with the home charger. I didn't get if there in the US you can only charge at 110vx12A or you can somehow get something better with another plug or connector. thanks mate, Great videos. Ciao from Italy!

Those are called tandem breakers...

I have heard that either the Tesla home charger or the car itself has cooling fans which can make quite a bit of noise during portions of the charging process. Can anyone address this and say what kind of noise level in decibels are to be heard?

No fans in the home charger. There are fans on the Tesla, but I rarely hear them spin-up during charging at home. If anything, they spin-up when you use a Tesla Supercharger because so much power is being sent to the car in a short amount of time. When they spin up at a Supercharger, the sound isn't a big deal because you're outside with all the other noises to compete with. If the car's fan spins up in my garage (rare) it can be kinda loud. I've never read it with a decibel reader to see how loud, but certainly not as loud as my radiator fans on my gas-powered cars.

So... it would take 2.5 days to fully charge using the most generic outlet?

Depending on how low your battery is, yeah it could. On a 110v outlet, you get about 3-4 miles per hour. 4 miles times 24 hours (1 day) is 96. 300-mile range battery (Long Range model) divided by 96 is 3.13 days to charge up from zero. Most people don't charge up from zero though, so it will be sooner than that. Even sooner if you have a standard range plus battery (less of a battery to charge). I paid an electrician to upgrade my panel with a 60amp breaker and run wires to my garage to have 240v from my wall charger. I can now charge up from zero in about 6-7 hours. So I can run my battery down to zero and put it on the charger when I go to sleep at night and have a full battery by the time I wake up. I'd say that's money well spent.

Just sit someone in the car and push it. The recup will charge your car much faster than any wall outlet! 😙🎶

@@terriecurran3328I had a 60 AMP sub panel already installed in the garage so I had a short 4 foot run to where I needed the outlet. I had this done prior to taking delivery. My car came with 2 adapters the standard 110 & the 14-50. When I took delivery all I had to do is use the right adapter and I was good to go.

All this is great info, but now I'm totally confused. My Tesla charger kit came with the standard house connector which gives me 5 mph in the best of times, and a J1772 charging adapter (or so it looks from the shop Tesla site). Now what I'd like to know is if, with some adapter (14-50?) I might get 20 or 25 mph. Yes, I understand I would need an electrician to install a different plug in outlet (I might, but doubt, I'd need to up my ampage). Am I on the right track??? So, in sum, to achieve my modest goal, I need a 14-50 adapter, an electrician, and the Tesla charger that came with MY. Is that it??? 🤞

Bad idea to just turn off breaker and stuff capped wire into wall. High chance someone will turn it on and it will be energized. Much better to open cover and disconnect in the panel....

I'm a food delivery driver and if I was to buy the fast charger, is there a way to set a limit on the charging overnight. Say get it to stop charging at 90 percent while you're sleeping with the app or something? Really interested in getting a tesla, but I drive 150-200 miles a day with my 10-12 hour shifts. Appreciate any comments. I'm looking at the performance model 3

Yes there is. You’ll have more options than me. What you’re asking can be set on the car itself. Mine is set to stop charging when it reaches 90%. So it does this regardless of where I charge ( home or free charger at work). My home wall charger is the older style and has no intelligence in it. The new wall chargers have WiFi and more intelligence to do more managing of the charging. But what you are wanting can be done in the car on the screen or set on your phones app.

Did you ever get your Tesla? I just started Dashing with my new Model 3 and I'm trying to figure out a more convenient way to charge other than the Supercharger. I live in a condo so it's a little complicated.

I ordered my WC at the same time I ordered the car. Neither have arrived yet, but the FEDEX people are claiming the WC will be here tomorrow (we'll see). I definitely agree that electrical work isn't hard, but a mistake can be very costly. I'll probably get an electrician buddy to help me hook it up in my panel while I'll do the grunt work and run the wires.

I've heard that supercharging often is not that healthy for the battery. Do you have a garage at your rental or is it an apartment with street parking? Would you be able to run an extension cord with a NEMA 14-50 plug that plugs in to your clothes dryer outlet? If it were me, I would stretch my budget and get the Long Range battery model. I don't look at it as driving for long distances, I look at it as how often I would need to charge it. Download an app called PlugShare. It will show you all the chargers in your area...some are free. I got front row EV parking at the United Center and it had a free charger to use while I was inside the event. Look for chargers near your work to see if you can park there while you are at work. If you supercharge once a week, I think you'll be fine. All other times, try to find a slower charger. It will make your battery last longer.

It does not upconvert power, it only passes the power that you have coming from your breaker box. Mine is actually 240v. I was able to get 240v by installing a 60amp breaker in my panel and running a new cable from the panel to this charger in my garage.

It depends on how often you use it. My electric bill did not go up a lot because I have free charging at my work. I'll use mine on weekends and whenever I need to top off. I would recommend trying it for a month to gauge how much it will cost you for the amount that you use. I also use 3rd party apps to locate free chargers in my area. Regardless of how much your bill goes up, it's still cheaper and more convenient than pumping gas. I absolutely love my home charger.

Owners don’t jump at a Tesla charger, there are better alternatives, it is not smart enabled that benefit from peak load or variable rate charging thus reducing your bill. Such as a omni or zappi.

2:22 terminology is wrong. You don't get a kilowatt per hour. You get 1 kilowatt. There's no timeframe for that. If you charge with 1 kilowatt for one hour you get 1 kWh into the battery. Compare that to a gas car. You get say 100 hp from the engine, when you drive up an mountain. This doesn't mean you get 100 hp per hour, but 100 hp for an hour, if it's a continuous steep mountain road.

Thanks man! Yeah, it's sad that everything has to turn political instead of just common sense. This is a GLOBAL pandemic that doesn't care about American or any other countries politics. As long as people keep going out without masks, this virus will continue to hang around. I'm ready for it to be over with too, but the virus needs a host for it to live. The only way to kill it is to starve it from having no hosts. Everyone should stay inside (if possible) for the few weeks that it lives, and if you must leave the house, wear a mask to help reduce the spread. We can beat this thing!

Generally speaking, I don't know how to do anything until I dabble in it first. Electricians aren't born knowing how to do this. They started off knowing nothing about it just like everyone else. Yes, be cautious. Yes, use common sense. If you get started on a project and things start to make you feel uncomfortable, then call in a professional to help you finish the job.

Good video, except the part about screwing over the electricians and wasting their time.

Definitely leave the work to the pros if you don't understand the basics of what you're doing. Other than that, I believe in DIY. Saving a buck puts food on my own table. That's like saying don't do your own oil change (on my gas cars) because it's taking away money from the Jiffy Lube guy. I appreciate what you're trying to say, but that shouldn't apply to everyone. Now, I will say this...some states require work like this to be performed by licensed professionals with a permit. If you live in one of those states, please abide by your local laws.

I love how your shirt says “trust science” when science is directly responsible for causing the pandemic.

Science didn't cause the pandemic, people did. I can create a new virus in a lab, and it won't cause a pandemic until people move the virus out of the lab. Apparently, the first place they always want to go is to the nearest airport. When I say Trust Science, it is a statement that I am listening to my doctor and the medical community, and not my old buddy from high school on Facebook that barely passed Biology 1 class.

@@BecauseTesla Bottom line is if people (scientists) didn't tinker with corona viruses this would never happen. You're playing word games. Without people science doesn't happen. Gain of function research, which is science, created this situation.

Just curious, but what violations are you talking about? Don't ever do what? I did hire a licensed electrician to install mine, and everything is up to code for my state.

@@BecauseTesla Circuit breaker used cannot be installed in that electrical panel ( just because it fits, it doesn't mean it is correct), LB conduit must be accessible, and It cannot be buried behind sheetrock; your electrical panel cannot take mini breakers ( not all panelboards are designed to have mini-breakers installed).

I still own 3 gas cars and only 1 electric. I had my reservation for a Model 3 for a few years before I finally bought it. My honest opinion is that I was foolish for waiting so long. I was also afraid about charging, etc. Now that I've lived with the car for a while, I can't wait to get rid of my gas cars. The "pros" outweigh the "cons" in my opinion. It's like saying I'm going to wait for smartphone batteries to last for a week without needing a charge before I buy one. That day will come eventually, but for now, why not enjoy your smartphone and just charge it every night when you go to bed? I do that with my car on my days off work, and I charge it for free at my office parking lot while I'm at work. It's charged up by the time my shift is up. Whenever you do go electric (as all manufacturers are heading that direction), you'll laugh when you realize that you were nervous over nothing. I know I did. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I was pretty excited to see your comment until I saw you interpret my shirt as propaganda. I trust my doctor. Always have, always will. He spent years in school to learn the science behind medicine and diseases. I will trust him way more than a classmate from high school posting on Facebook. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Tesla would never have been stupid enough to wear a mask over a fake flu pandemic based on zero science! ;)

I'm flattered that you think I look young enough to be in high school. You did see my video, didn't you? Your degree means nothing. I have a degree too, and it also means nothing. How is it based on zero science when every scientist on the planet is researching this and telling us that it is very real? I know people personally that have died from Covid, so I know it is not a hoax.
