    Fav moment from JCS is any time he’s on screen. ;) But honestly I really like his I Dont Know How to Love Him Reprise and how much raw emotion he can put into his voice in those scenes like Damned for All Time. It really gives depth to his character and I love the way he actually ACTs the part in his voice and face.

    The absolute shift from Judas's death to Superstar really shows how perfect he was for this role

  • @ezrawells2924
    @ezrawells29243 жыл бұрын

    The most offensive thing to me about auto-tuning his performance is that it takes away so much of the emotion that Tim put into the role. Judas needs to have a visceral and raw sound to the performance because he goes through so much in the space of the show that it's the only way to adequately display his turmoil. It might not sound as pleasant but its a part of the role. It's also quite rude in my opinion because auto-tuning him makes it seem like his voice is not equipped for the role when, in actual fact, his voice absolutely is. All that being said, I saw him live when they toured the show again in 2014 and every moment that he was on stage, he captured my attention. He was so perfectly cast. If I absolutely had to pick my favorite moment, it would be when Judas is singing I Don't Know How To Love Him. His despair and agony cut me to the bone, the way it becomes this defeated kind of squeak as he curls in on himself. If I hadn't already been a fan of Tim, I know for a fact I would have gone away and looked him up that night.

    Yeah. Judas is SUPPOSED to be in pain; the notes shouldn't matter as much as the emotion. And with every auto-tune they did on his voice, they took emotion away from Tim's portrayal of Judas.

  • @JustAnotherBuckyLover

    @JustAnotherBuckyLover

    Absolutely. My other favourite Judas is Drew Sarich (who also does a really good Jesus too, and has performed in both roles on Broadway, in the West End and all over Europe and the US) and he is just as painfully emotive, despite a more traditional musical theatre vocal quality. In the same way, as I love Steve Balsamo's Jesus, Drew brings that painful pleading and begging quality from Judas into Jesus for Gethsemane, and I love when it's more about the pain and the emotion than being concerned about hitting every single note absolutely perfectly. But nobody has caused the same emotional reaction to the suicide scene as Tim. I had to pause the DVD as I was having a full-on ugly-cry meltdown.

    I think the biggest crime the production team committed on this run of JCSS was pitch correction on Tim. Petition for ALW to re-release this run without pitch correction?

    I don't think it was jealousy really, its desperation, the desperation to keep his closest friend and mentor alive. Because he had more understanding of the dog eat dog world that they are exposing their group into. ("Listen Jesus to the warning I give. Please remember that I want us to live. But its sad to see our chances, weakening with every hour") When it was just them being taught by Jesus, it was much easier to explain the nuances of his teachings to them and have a quick mutual understanding of its wisdom. But as they travel and their influence grew. It became much harder to control that misinterpretation. Judas and his fellow Apostles knew that Jesus' claim as the "King of Kings" is more of a spiritual "King" than a political one. But most people they've come across won't interpret it that way. The public saw Jesus as a political figure and saw his act of miracles as a "campaign" of sorts. ("All the good you've done will soon get swept away. You begun to matter more than the things you say") That's why when word got around and reached the Pharisees and the Roman Governor Pontius Pilate, those political powers felt threatened by this rumored "King of Kings" and had a watchful eye on him, waiting for a slip up that would give em an excuse to silence him. Judas was the only one who thought that all this was getting out of hand. If this kept going, the political powers will surely mark their friend as a Blasphemer and the public will mark him as a Liar. ("But every word you say today, gets twisted round some other way. And they'll hurt you when they think you've lied") There's a reason why he was Jesus' right hand man, he wasn't there to be evil. He was the smartest disciple. So Judas tried his damnest to convince Jesus that they need to keep their head down or lose it. That's why he also got pissed at his fellow disciples because they're just following blindly like they don't care what all this attention would lead to. And this is why he didn't like Mary. He wasn't jealous, in fact, the story implies that if the situation was any different, Judas would have just let Jesus and Mary be. Like I said awhile ago, Jesus' teachings were being twisted as they became more popular. The public won't care about nuances, only surface level examples. And Jesus being with Mary is a contradicition. And contradictions just gives the nay-sayers more ammo once sh*t hits the fan. ("It doesn't help that you're inconsistent, they just need a small excuse to put us all away") Judas wants to avoid stuff like that at all cost. At the end of his rope, the frustration, the desperation. He sold Jesus to the Pharisees to push the other disciples to act, and to show Jesus what his actions will lead to. Judas didn't anticipate that it will lead to the worst possible outcome. He tried to do everything right, but at his lowest point he made the worst possible decision. So no, it wasn't jealousy. Its desperation.

    @DadisDad To me a great example to strength that Tim gives as the character Judas, is the Last Supper Scene in this video. His anger in his face and voice when he sings "You sad pathetic man..." and as the scene continues. The emotion how Judas feels about the situation with Jesus is very strong. That Judas himself feels betrayed by Jesus because he feels used and doesn't understand that this was supposed to happen. That is one reason why I like Tim. He attitude and he put is all into this role. What is so great about Carl that makes him good? Everyone has their opinion and what they like. But, sometimes people can just like someone because they believe an actor brings forth more emotion and power to the character then how other's portray that same character.

    @DadisDad Obviously i wasn't the person you were talking to but anyway: I think Tim has mountains of charisma and brings a more sympathic tone to the character making you think more about the subjects at hand. As for the voice, Anderson has a great voice but thats all it is just great. It feels more controlled in my opinion whereas Tim's feels like it comes from his acting and the personality of Judas. I also think his dynamic with the other members of the group, Mary and Jesus is more realistic and interesting. I suppose the style of the show also leans in his favour (costumes, set etc).

    In my opinion, his voice lends so much character and grit to the role, it's so different to hear a gruffer Judas next to a more smooth-sounding Jesus in this production. He's always been my favourite Judas and I was so close to seeing him in this tour but was "too young" at the time so my mother took my brother lmao just missed out. His passion irrefutably shines through in this performance and it's fantastic.

    @DadisDad Hi! Tim Minchin was my first Judas, and after I watched this production, I watched every other one I could possibly find, including the one with Carl Anderson. But every single one I watched or listened to, I just went right back to Tim. I think it may be the edge he puts into it. And I also love the emotion he brings to it. He's a wonderful actor. I don't find any of the other performances lacking. I think every other actor brings something different to the character and I just adore the way Tim adapted it. I hope that answers your question!

    @DadisDad I wasn't going to reply to this comment, but I just feel like I have to now. After reading some other comments on this video, i see you took the time to reply on those as well. I answered your comment and questions very politely, and gave you my opinion. Then you answered with another opinion that invalidated mine. It seems you did the same with every other one I saw. Everyone is entitled to their own feelings and opinions. No need to be rude to say you did not like this performance. Just because you feel that way, does not mean anyone else has to. Maybe try being a bit kinder in future.

  • @BrittanySmith-nm3yl

    @BrittanySmith-nm3yl

    @DadisDad @DadisDad The difference is, I listened to your opinion but didn't invalidate it. You just proved me right again in your last reply. You are saying my opinion is WRONG. I never did that to you. Carl Anderson being your favorite is your OPINION. An opinion can be many different things. So just because I said Tim Minchin is MY favorite Judas, does NOT mean my opion is wrong. You can simply disagree with it without being so incredibly negative about it. You also go completely against the first question you asked me, which i answered politely. You clearly are not genuinely curious about why I feel the way I do because you are completely comfortable in just telling me I'm wrong. You're commenting on people's postings and outright saying they are wrong and crazy. That is rude. If you want to talk to people about analyzing music, by all means, go for it. But please, do so in a less rude way.

  • @BrittanySmith-nm3yl

    @DadisDad I never said I know anything about music. I don't. I was saying if you want to discuss music (with people who are knowledgeable about it), go for it. But don't just outright drag the other person's thoughts. I know my opinion and what I like. I happen to love this performance. I didn't come here to try to convince you of anything. I'm not trying to make you like Tim Minchin, or believe something different than when you commented on my post. Im not trying to give tell you critisms, if that's what you're looking for. I came here stating my honest opinion that I just love his performance and he happens to be my favorite Judas. If I can't pinpoint exactly why, that's okay. I wasn't trying to start an argument. You're favorite is Carl Anderson. That is entirely valid. You don't like Tim Minchin's Judas. That is also valid. But please, the problem I have with your comment is that you hopped on my post to purposely just drag Tim. That's not cool. Let's just leave it that you don't like this performance and you adore Carl Anderson. I like Carl Anderson, but Tim is my preferred Judas. Just leave it at that. Have a good night.

I love Tim Minchin because of his intensity, I like his acting better, and I love his interpretation of the character. I prefer the rawness of his voice also, but I think he's extremely talented and he gives his voice more of a rough quality because that's his style. I've seen you commenting on every single fucking comment on this video that mentions Tim minchin and its fucking annoying.

    Tims performance is just as great as always! But the main question is what you did to convince him to wear shoes? I think it is that he wants to be in character, but do you guys have other ideas since he still wears his typically dark eye makeup? 😂

    Maybe he was persuaded to wear shoes when he saw all the steps and thought of all the stubbed toes he might endure (particularly while running up them) otherwise 😂
