"We can't stop the pass or the run...otherwise, we're in great shape." is the perfect line

once he got the player personnel sorted out he had a mighty fine football team by the late 70s and early 80s 👍👍

When McKay was at USC, and OJ Simpson was the star running back (and not a murder suspect): "Coach McKay, why do you keep just feeding the ball to Simpson?" "Why not? The ball isn't heavy, and he doesn't belong to a union."

Coach McKay was hilarious, and he was a great college coach. What people don’t know is that HE WAS ALSO A GREAT NFL COACH! He had that expansion team in the playoffs in a very short time, and it wasn’t just a freak year. They made it back twice and won a playoff game. The year after that, they world was thinking SUPERBOWL. YES THAT HAPPENED. But then Hugh Culverhouse screwed it up similar to Al Davis or Jerry Jones have screwed up stuff for their teams.

John McKay was a great, great coach. USC was the best team in the nation under him. From 1962 to 74 4 national championships … in an era where there was a lot more parity. His ‘72 was maybe the best team ever - no team got closer than 9 point loss. His players were everywhere in the NFL. And then in 4 years the Bucs played the Rams to get into the Super Bowl. Plus he was funny.

Thanks for sharing this with me. John McKay is my favorite coach since I was 10. This man was extremely intelligent, which was one tribute to the game of football.

I remember seeing when he was mic'ed up on the sidelines; one of the best lines which wasn't shown here was when he said that he was threathing to run anyone who didn't sit down to Green Bay, back in GB's down years and no one wanted to be sent there. Things change, gladly as a life long Packer fan.
