I looked at the 85mm, but thought It needed to much distance to get a group of 4 or so in the image head to toe. It is my first Prime Lens and is producing good results after just 1 wk. This reviewers mistake recommending the Nikon 105 macro for portraiture and talking about how sharp it is, when most in the know photographers acknowledge Tokina superior sharpness. The parrot photo wasn't impressive. This review sounded more like a advertisement for Nikon.

WildOne 44: It says right in the title that this is a video of the best NIKON portrait lenses. If you can't read and expected something else, then you're mistaken. I didn't "parrot" anything, these are my personal opinions after 20 years of shooting professionally, buying, testing and swapping gear almost continuously. I've shot 35mm, a variety of medium formats, and a few view cameras before the transition to DX digital and FX digital SLRs. I even shoot with my cell phone a lot. Angry photographer (I've seen nearly all his videos btw, some of them 2-3 times and have argued points with him after he commented a bunch of BS on my videos) never shows any results of his biased "Knowledge", at least none that anyone would pay him to print large and hang on a wall, and nearly no samples which makes me think he probably lacks an eye, and can only recommend lenses from what he thinks they are like. When he does show an image it's like a picture of a pine cone or something, you know just to "test" the lens, nothing creative with good composition, lest he be judged himself. He always touts the number of lenses he owns, to support his "expertise". He's told me in one comment he owns 14 lenses one time so he would "know better" than me, 25 another time, and 100 lenses one time. He can't seem to get it straight. For all I know, he probably borrows lenses from the used case at the camera store he worked at and they're not even his. I've got 13 lenses currently, and if I had 100, I don't think my kit would be any more complete. The number of lenses I own, have nothing to do with my knowledge of photography. I don't need seven 50mm lenses like I had at one point in time. AP's preconceptions are that having fewer lens elements is the gospel, and Ai-s lenses are the best, and cheaper lenses must be better. Things like sharpness wide open and chromatic aberration are inconsequential to him, but "saturation" is paramount, something that's easily adjusted in post or even in-camera. He also relates saturation and micro-contrast exclusively to how many lens elements a particular lens has (regardless of coating technology differences, glass type, or even the invention of computer aided design). He thinks that ED glass or fluorite or any "doped glass" as he calls it, is like a meat grinder to images, but it has no actual basis in reality. He thinks that more highly corrected optics destroy image quality. (Which is correct in only certain lenses) He thinks Zeiss Otus and Sigma Art lenses are crap, completely because of element count and "prior reputations" in the case of Sigma, which is hilarious to me since I've tested them and own some and know the differences. Zeiss and Sigma are fighting for #1 right now really. They've outpaced Nikon and Canon pretty easily. He thinks that Zeiss Milvus is a waste of money, and only recommends the older models downplaying any possible improvements to Milvus because he doesn't own them, yet they are exceptional lenses. He thinks that he alone is the only person with his breadth of experience and his arrogance won't allow him to consider another expert with equal experience to his, if not more in the field professionally. He's bashed other highly skilled and more accomplished photographers publicly and shamed them for their opinions. His opinion is very biased and full of unfounded preconceptions, and he reviews based on that, not actual real world use unfortunately. I've actually bought several lenses based on his high recommendation and had to laugh at their performance and at how much of a sucker I was, when I actually tested them next to modern equivalents. His "Must Own" lines got even me. That's the truth. But many sheep like yourself are swayed nonetheless and only "parrot" what he says to everyone else. There's no free lunch unfortunately. Hey, I know AP has been through some shit, and so have I, so I can sympathize with him and I kind of feel sorry for him. He might even be fun to get drunk with. I think he's a good knowledge-base for Ai-s lenses generally. His titles "MUST OWN" or "HAVE TO BUY NOW" or "Secret Lens" ect are pretty bogus though and are only designed to bring him views. Shoot what you like and I'll do the same. I just bought a 60 year old Rolleiflex film camera yesterday and I'll be having fun playing with that right now to change it up a bit from the digital workflow, probably shoot some vintage fashion. It's got a Zeiss lens with only about 5-6 elements, so AP should even like it, haha. It's all fun stuff. But good luck to you, and enjoy your Kool-aid! Maybe put some vodka in it next time! I enjoy a good debate. :)

@@Clint_the_Audio-Photo_Guy I respect your opinion but I do think AP knows what he talks about. Modern complex lens design destroys the character of lens, like 180ED ais135f2.8 ais105f2.5 Canon 35L or 135L they each has a unique feel almost no modern lens has. Sharp enough for portraiture? I think so. Not as sharp as something like Nikon 105F1.4? Of course not. Does it matter for portraiture even prints large? Not so much. Even an old ais lens outresolve a 36mp d810 easily. My two cents.

Isn’t it true that a long lens like 200 and up, you can shot wide open and your whole subject is in focus and the background blurred? Where as you shot shorter then 200, then you have to stop down to like f4 to get the whole subject in focus but then the background is not as blurry.

  • @Clint_the_Audio-Photo_Guy

    @Clint_the_Audio-Photo_Guy

    6 жыл бұрын

It depends on your camera to subject distance and the depth of your subject. The longer lenses to tend to flatten the subject and render them in front of a blurred background, but it's not a rule. The depth of field you will have, is still always determined by your aperture, focal length and camera to subject distance. The fact that we don't have any 300mm f/1.4 lenses, means that for most people with a top prime, they'll still only have f/2.8, which is like stopping down a shorter f/1.4 prime two whole stops. A 200mm f/2 still has an ultra shallow DOF, so even with it wide open you'd be hard pressed to get your whole subject in focus unless you were very far away.

Hi Clint, Thank you for this video. I'm a beginner to photography and have the Nikon d7200. So far for portraits, I've been using the 50 1.8 G which has been great. However, I'm looking to get a longer lens for portraits and candids of my son when outside. Longer as to not disturb him in the activity he his doing so that shot becomes more natural. I'm considering the 105 Micro or the 135 DC. I realize a lot of people (including yourself) might find the these FLs long for portraiture and candids on DX but as said, the longer distance serves the purpose of not disturbing my son. Also, I'll most like move to FX some time. Now, you say you can shoot the 105 wide open and that it is sharp at 2.8. But like al macro lenses, the aperture is stopped down automatically, so how far do you need to be from the subject on DX and FX in order for the 105 to stay wide open at 2.8? I may want to shot the ocassional macro so the 105 has an advantage here. The sigma 105 macro is much cheaper. Have you tried that one? The 135 appeals to me too, but I've heard it has a lot of fringing / CA that is difficult to correct in post? If lens profiles take care of this automatically, then no problem. But if correcting must be done manually and is a time consuming, tedeous process... then? And what's the resolution like on the 135 DC being an older lens? Hope you will be able to help me out. The Sigma 150-600C is the most expensive lens I have ever bought so far, so going with either the 105 or 135 is a big outlay for me. Cheers,

Well, since I don't know your budget, I'll assume it's inline with your camera choices. A Nikon 85mm f/1.8g lens will be very nice and on the long side of portraits. (127.5mm in FX terms) It'll give you great blur and sharpness though. A 50mm f/1.4G will do nicely as well and be like a 75mm (in full-frame terms since you're buying a DX sensor camera). The 50mm would do great all around, but the 85mm will give you more blur and depth compression for some wow portraits. 50mm would let you work in closer. Both are great. Good luck!

yeah but Tamron is f1.8. f1.4 makes a quite significant difference.

great explanation except the tokina 100mm is also very sharp wide open and it has less optical elements

The Tokina isn't as sharp wide open as the Nikkor. I've compared exstensively. It has a lot of CA wide open too. Everything improves a lot by f/5.6 but this video is specifically about portrait lenses from Nikon, not macros. The Nikkor macro makes a great portrait lens with exceptional bokeh. As a pure tripod mounted macro, the Tokina is probably a better choice, no doubt. The 85mm f/1.8 is a very nice lens too.

There are so many professional photographers that say the tokina is a much better lens then the 105macro form Nikon. I have the tokina and I much say it is better and better built. I've even seen videos of the top 10 macro lens and Nikon doesn't even make the list but tokina does. And it's a LOT cheaper in price.

If only I had a dime for every time someone told me that... The Tokina is a fine lens and a bargain at it's price...But, there are advantages that the Nikkor has over it making it a better choice for portraiture. Those advantages being resolution and CA performance wide open, creamier background blur rendering, silent/fast AF-S focusing, VR stabilization, and far greater working distance at 1:1, something that is critical for macro work. The Tokina is a fine macro lens and probably the better choice if tripod mounted macro work is your exclusive use, since it is a bit sharper and more contrasty at middle apertures, but the Nikon 105mm VR is a better all-around lens, and superior for portraits. A lot of people pump up the Tokina merely because it costs much less. I have compared them intently. That said, for Macros I'm looking to Zeiss next... which probably won't be the greatest portrait lens. All lenses are compromises, since this was a video on portrait lenses, that's why the Nikkor VR lens was included, because it's a great portrait lens.

@@Clint_the_Audio-Photo_Guy the CA on the Nikon is more irritating than the tokina...the tokina and sigma macro are the most balanced and best 105mm f2.8 macro lens for the F mount you can pick up... I prefer the tokina cuz it's also very sharp for landscape (focus to infinity)...the Nikon was very very disappointing to me... i kinda wonder if you really compared both... Checkout photographylife and kzread.info/dash/bejne/nKShscmqYtmto7w.html... for proof online and I can attest to same from my personal experience. Also DXOMARK

You missed the best of them all and thats the 105 f2.5 Ai with integral lens hood. Manual focus and a small jewel. Even in an interview this year, Steve McMurray says its the best and the Afghan Girl is testament. You can get one for $300.

Yep, I've owned them both but now have the 135DC instead. I put the 105mm VR lens in because it is very under rated for portraits and is a very good portrait lens with particularly creamy bokeh even at medium apertures. The 105 DC lens is very sharp but it has a bit more CA than the VR lens wide open so most people stop it down some. The VR lens can be used wide open just fine. With the addition of VR, it's usefull in low light as well. It's the budget option in this group, but I felt the need to include it. Is a purist portrait lens the DC is probably the better option, but the VR lens is more flexible as a all-arounder.

It's a labor of Love my man. It took me probably 12-13 years before I could afford a used one, and then I had to make payments. Even then I started with used 25 year old Ai-S versions before I could venture into the newer auto-focus ones. Still haven't gone VR on a super-tele yet, and I've never bought one new, haha.

For anyone watching this; Everything mentioned in this video is true for Full frame sensor bodies. On the crop sensor body the 50mm f1.4 is much better than 85mm for portraits, as it's an equivalent of 75mm on full frame (50x1.5=75) so if you're on APS-C sensor don't waste your money on 85mm just get 50mm 1.4G lens.

I did really used to love my 50mm f/1.4G lens. Light, relatively reasonable, and sharp as a razor when stopped down a bit. Not much correction needed.
