However, when I made these installations, the chime box had a buzz and eventually one of the chime posts popped off. I also noticed a smell, as if something was burning. Then parallel connections on the 2 units for the common connections. I would reach out to NEST however to confirm if this will work or not before purchasing.

Great video. Thanks. Just my experience. Turns out that my doorbell was being powered by two different circuits. Started out switching one breaker at a time off then ring the bell then switching it back on. The bell never went dead for all the breakers. Next I turned off all the breakers. the bell was dead. Switched on each breaker (one at a time) then rang the bell then switched it off. When I got to a breaker that rang the bell, I made a note of the breaker number then switched it off and went to the next breaker. When I finished, I noted that two breakers controlled the bell. BTW, my wife was at the front door with her cell phone and I was at the breaker box with my cell phone. NO, I wasn't running back and forth.

As for anchors, remember if you can't find a good anchor to fit the space you can use anything pliable that will allow the screw to get a good bite. I've used toothpicks and chop sticks, used rat tails cut off from zip ties, you can even use scrap bits of wire - just cut them to a reasonable length, fit as many in the hole as possible and secure your project.

I installed my Nest doorbell without a chime, i ignored the little white chime adapter disc and simply connected up 24vac into the back of the Nest doorbell. When i opened the little white disc to see what was in it, the first thing which surprised me was that the two grey wires were connected together and likewise the two white wires, and there is no wifi in it, it’s just a clever little device which sits in series with the ac power feed to divert power to the chime for moment when the bellpush is pressed, so since i have google in all rooms and i don’t need a chime thatks why i just left it out of my install

My Nest Hello recently started shutting off entirely. Worked nearly flawlessly for 2.5 years. It's been off for the past 2 days (colder weather in Canada, but nothing near the operating limitations), and just came back online again this morning (-1 celsius). The blue halo light and green status light will abruptly shut off when it's malfunctioning, and I cannot figure out why. I'm wondering now if it's a power/transformer issue? If anyone has thoughts, I'd be grateful to hear them --- Google has told me to just "buy a new one"... Thanks for the great video!

  • @theinternetelectrician

No need to turn off the power for the entire house. If you can determine what individual breaker feeds the circuit that your doorbell transformer is on then great, only turn off that circuit. But it's not all that common to include the transformer in listing what is on each circuit. But for example, if you find the transformer in the garage, or near your panel, it will likely be on the circuit that controls the lights and receptacles in that room, or if it's by the panel it might be on a circuit called the panel receptacle, or something similar. If you can't easily figure out what the breaker is, or can't find the transformer, just shut off one breaker at a time and see if the doorbell still works or not. When it quits, you've found it. Also, the voltage from the transformer is very low, usually 16 volts. Not that you should ever work on something without shutting off the power, but 16V is something that most people would not even feel by touching it directly. That's why we power circuits like this with low voltage so if that cheap doorbell button breaks and the wires are exposed, you're not going to get any kind of a harmful shock from it.

You didn't waste time. You learned something about your house. It's your responsibility to know everything about your house. Why? Because it's YOUR house and YOU are responsible for its well-being. That being said, there are plenty of short cuts you can take in installing this stuff. But when stuff goes wrong you always have to reduce to checking everything, which means finding everything. Wait til you have to find a tv splitter that's embedded in the ceiling of your finished basement...

can't remember exactly what anchors I ended up using, but it wasn't pretty and the only thing that saved the installation was the caulking to basically glue everything together and then the bead around the base is probably what's holding it in place more than anything. Just to verify the output voltage is in the range needed for the Nest, and you can check the voltage with your meter at the transformer terminals to ensure you shut off the correct breaker for the 120V circuit that it is fed from.
