In this tutorial video, Dan Larsson shows you what we feel may be the best multiband compressor plugin available today; FabFilter Pro-MB. With FabFilter’s reputation for pristine audio quality and innovative design, this plugin doesn’t disappoint.
It’s quickly become the defacto “go-to” multiband compressor for producers, mix and mastering engineers around the globe. Why? Tune in to see Dan walk us through 3 interesting, advanced uses of this incredible plugin.
1:23 Intro to Pro-MB & Interface / GUI Overview
First, you’ll see a brief tour of the Pro-MB interface and all it’s controls. In the demo you learn how to add and adjust bands, how to use the advanced compressor and expander on each band, and how to set up the sidechain area.
6:07 Boosting the Transients to Make a Super Punchy Neuro Drum & Bass Loop
In this example, Dan uses Pro-MB to isolate just the transients of a bass loop. Using a band on the top end, he boosts just the high frequencies of the transients to add impact and punch using the upwards expansion feature. This is a great technique that could also be used on drums in place of a transient shaper.
8:23 Using a Snare Drum Feeding the Internal Sidechain to Duck Bass & Boost Top End
Next up, Dan uses the internal sidechain function and has it listen to the snare drum by setting the internal sidechain listening mode to Free vs. Band. This allows Pro-MB to respond to a manually selected frequency range rather than the band that’s being compressed. Here, Dan ducks the sub using downwards compression and boosts up the highs using upwards expansion every time the snare hits. This can add momentum and energy to loops.
10:03 External Sidechain Compression to Duck the Sub to a Drum Track
Finally, you learn how to set up transparent ducking using the external sidechain input to compress the sub to a drum track. Dan shows an advanced routing in Ableton Live to help to set up the routing from the drum track to Pro-MB’s sidechain input using a Send and Return Track.

This just change my entire life!!!!!! The video and all the examples of the power off the multi-band compression! Had no idea the powers of this!! Makes you realize that simplicity is the key and there is no need to have millions of tools and plugins! You just have to have the correct tools and plugins and know them extremely well and what they do and what they are use for! this is by far the most amazing video on fabfilter Pro MB!!!!! So grateful and bless to com across this and to learn the powers of our investment on certain plugins! We love #fabfilters and the more we get familiar with them the less amount of plugins we are using and guess what !?? The less amount of plugins we use our music is getting better! lol Thank you so much for this amazing video! Happy Holidays!!!!

The functionality of FabFilter's plugins is amazing, but also very worth noting is that they SOUND great. I just started using Pro-Q3 the other day, and from the very first curve I set I was blown away by how clean the boost sounded. Also now using Pro-L2 and that thing is a remarkable beast. You want loud AND clean? Drop Pro-L2 on the master and have fun!

That PRO Q3 is a beast! You can do dynamic processing on it!! love it!! Only EQ we use! no need for nothing else! Draw a curve and right click and select make dynamic! this is dope for those kicks and 808 so they don't clash! Also you can monitor the other channels and see the frequencies and ect without having to pull up multiple EQ spectrums!

  • @warpacademy

Isn't that what you want? It's the expected behaviour. If you want an area without ducking, just delete the drum hits on the source track, or use a ghost sidechain source track to drive the sidecain input on ProMB.

It is a very cool plugin. The comment that Ableton Live makes things sound thin is inaccurate though. DAWs are all very transparent and phase cancellations tests have proven this many times. It's specific production techniques and use of native effects or plugins that will influence the sound. Read up on this: www.image-line.com/support/flstudio_online_manual/html/app_audio.htm

@@warpacademy I used to use Protools, but now I use Ableton and I can say i noticed the sound quality drop instantly. All you have to do is too drag a well mastered track into both daws, bounce them and compare. Protools sounds cleaner and fuller whereas Ableton sounds a little muddy in the mid range.
