Any recommendations for someone who loves making noises in all formats and just wants to see if this is the right field for me? There's some useless videos on my channel that contain my current microphone which isn't awful but I really want to feel the noises when listening back. Keep up the good work! :D

    While I am contemplating on getting a new mic for voice overs and singing in the near future, I do love my Harlan Hogan VO: 1-A mic by MXL. Also, isn't the TLM-103 related to U87 ai?

  • @voices

    @voices

    Thats awesome to hear! They're super similar, but they have a few differences. The TLM103 outperforms for self-noise performance, but the U87ai has some more features (polar pattern) and slightly different internals that makes for a slightly different sound profile. But many would say they're indistinguishable for the most part.

    I'm a singer but also want to do more VA for games (including grunts or screams) and I can't have my mic peaking all the time (turning gain down helps but can only do so much) would you say the Audio Technica AT2020 would cover that nicely?

  • @voices

    @voices

    If you're doing a lot of screaming and not able to get the microphone gain low enough, I would look for a microphone that has a 'Pad' on it. Some microphones have a switch called a 'pad' that will drop the gain on the mic itself (usually by 10db). This is really useful for recording things like drums that are just crazy loud. Hope this helps! -Randy

  • @voices

    Glad to hear you're getting back to it! It's a fantastic mic. Depending on the types of reads you're doing, you may find that you need to turn up the gain a lot, which may cause some noise. Because of this challenge, a lot of SM7b users also purchase a CloudLifter, which gives the mic some additional clean gain. I would suggest trying it without. If you're hearing a hiss in your recordings after normalizing the audio to -1dB, you may need to look for another option. For louder reads, it should be no problem at all! Hope this helps -Randy

    Sorry Sir, but the AT2020 is no LARGE DC microphone - it just has a 16mm capsule - it just looks like a LDC ;) Also I would prefer the Rode NT1 over the NT1-A. It has a much more balanced sound.

  • @voices

    @voices

    8 ай бұрын

    The AT2020 is a weird mic because it's too large to categorize under SDC, and too small to categorize under LDC, that said, Audio Technica claims the intent was to create a mic that functioned as a LDC with a smaller body, so I think it's fair to rope it in, just my two cents. With you on the NT1 for sure.

I would recommend going into a local music store or Guitar Centre and seeing if they have any bundles available. The Focusrite Scarlet Solo and PreSonus interfaces come to mind as relatively inexpensive and super reliable. Hope this helps! -Randy

    @@gabrielcoll6168 Hey! I've managed to find work fairly frequently using the Blue Yeti X USB microphone, for me a lot of the work to create better sounding audio came from things like choosing a quiet spot in my house, soundproofing, creating an enclosed space and treating it with soft materials like blankets. There's also some work that can be done in post with plug ins to reduce the self noise and fuzzy sounds. For a starter microphone I think it's more than good enough to get you going!

    It is your video and your opinion but there are a few errors: 1. The AT2020 is not an LDC, it is a back electret 16mm diameter capsule (medium diaphragm) condenser. It can sound a little thin and has a high self noise of 20 dBA so it is best to test prior to purchase. 2. The U87 and U87ai are both FET condensers and use no vacuum tubes. 3. The Rode NT1a can be harsh and a bit too bright. Many people find the similar NT1 to be a better balanced microphone. 4. The AKG P220 also is a little high on self noise at 16 dBA but has a very nice sound with a slightly bright top end. Best bang for buck neutral VO mic is the Shure KSM32, but of course you’ll still need to test it on your voice.

    @@ajinkyathorat7502 The TLM 103 is over boosted in the high frequency range and double the cost but does have lower self noise. I have not heard the KSM32 sound brittle for VO work but if you are compressing spoken word that much there are numerous other microphones that are better options! It's an interesting option for sure. Personally, I think it works really well for broadcast and announcer style of reads. After all, it was designed as a broadcast dynamic. The only reason I would suggest avoiding using dynamic mics is because they are quite gain-hungry, especially the SM7b. A lot of producers will use a CloudLifter with it to get some more relatively clean gain, but otherwise you may have to crank your gain, causing a bit of unwanted noise. That said, if you're always doing louder, punchy style reads, it will be fantastic! All my opinion, of course. -Randy

    The AT2020 is one of the worst microphones around. It's NOT a large diaphragm condenser, but an SDC, and if you get feedback it's about the high noise floor. Get an AKG P120 instead. Similar price, better quality all over. The NT1-A is NOT suitable for voice over, because it's way too bright. The NT-1 however (which just got it's 5th generation released, and from which you have shown the website instead if the one you mentioned) has a great reputation, and would be a great choice. The NT1-A is not as good in taking the processing that is often used in voice over. The AKG P220, TLM-103 and U87 are great within their price range. There are also many microphones in between those price brackets.
