you can't trust your adrenaline-addled memory of the audition moment. you don't know how you actually sounded unless you record and listen back when you're feeling sane. your recording holds the key information you need to improve.
the RODE wireless go ii is my new go-to recommendation for my students.

Thank you, this is great! I would love videos that help us with self-taping, particularly for singers.

Hello and thank you for your video! Do you know how this rode would sound for a flute and piccolo? I tried to find some information but didn’t…

I found that hearing myself in the (mostly empty) hall was much more 'live' (echo-y) than I expected. So, I think I played a bit slower than intended, based on what I was hearing. I know that there is much less reverb when the hall has a lot of audience, but I just felt that clarity was more important. I had been using my cell phone, for recording practice, but couldn't envision a way to record my actual audition :( Also - questions.....When would you turn on the recording ...what are the recording time limits?

each microphone can hold something like 40 hours of audio on it... the limitation would be the battery life which the rode page says is 7 hours. i usually just flip on the device in the warmup room.

Great video Rob! Fascinating about adjusting rhythmic/grace note timing for the space, it's an obvious point which isn't actually talked about nearly enough. Sadly, data protection regulations in the UK are pretty darn strict (especially RE unsolicited recordings of people's voices), so I don't imagine anyone would get away with any of these techniques here!

good points! although - make sure this isn't just another 'limiting belief' keeping you from progressing as a musician.

But they don’t record by themselves no? I think they only trasmit the audio: You need to connect them to some device that actually records…?

  • @robknopperstudio

nope! each of the mics records internally. you need to plug it into your computer and open the 'rode central' app to make that selection.
