    Chris Brockhurst great video....the Tamron 17-28mm lives on my camera now. Amazing lens especially for the price. I always wanted the Sony 24mm 1.4....and I might still one day, but the Tamron at 24mm 2.8 is pretty nice! My next lens purchase will be either 55mm 1.8 or the 85mm 1.8.

    On my a7riii I use the 24 GM, 24-105 G, 100-400 GM, and am still using my cheap 50 1.8, and 12mm f2. I’m looking at getting the 90mm Macro and a better ultrawide angle next.

    Chris Brockhurst for weddings, gym and commercial work I’ve been using the same 3 lenses since the start 50 1.4, 85 1.4 (started with 1.8 versions) and lately the 24mm 1.4 (started with the 16-35). I like to keep it minimal! I would also like to know why you dislike the term videographer, and what you would rather be called? I get called a videographer all the time and I just don’t like how it sounds but I don’t think that’s a good enough reason to justify complaining about it lol great vid again man thanks for all the helpful tips!

    Complete Camera Novice here and I really appreciated this video! I was planning on buying the $2,000+ Sony 16-35mm F2.8 zoom lens for recording KZread videos (mostly shooting at 24), but thanks to your incredible advice I'm now going to purchase the Sony 24mm F1.4 Prime lens and I'm so stoked! I'm actually going to have a higher quality lens at a lower price and I'm not going to have to worry about zoom. Perfect starting lens for me!

When I bought my A7III few months ago i went with the 24mm f1.4 (got lucky with stock) and the 85mm f1.8. those lens are amazing and because they are prime lens you are force to be more creative and nove around to get the shot. I'm now looking at the 70-200mm as my next purchase :)

    If it helps, I pre-ordered the 17-28 as soon as it was available from B&H and Adorama. Both were backordered for weeks. I finally stopped by a small local shop and they actually had stock. I would call around to smaller camera shops in your area and see if they are available. Good luck! I never really liked the 28-75 but the 17-28 is a superb lens :)

    is the 24-70 f2.8 a good choice or not? I'm thinking of selling my Canon 5D mark iii and my 70-200 f2.8 for an a7riii but I don't know what lens I should get for travel videos and cinematic type of videos + photos of any kind. I was thinking of a 50mm f1.8 and a 24-70 f2.8 or f.4. What do you think?

    I have never used the 24-70, in that range I have a 24, 55, and 85 prime which covers my ranges. The GM is a HEAVY lens though, not very travel friendly. For some people it would be a good option, I would say if you have a way to rent first it might be a good idea

    Man, I have the same lenses in my kit. The 24GM is AMAZING. I also shoot Real Estate and Combat Sports (BJJ). I've owned the 70-800 f2.8 Canon so I've been scared to get the Sony version in f4. You have made me feel comfortable saving the money and going with the f4. If I need extra bokeh in my portraits I'll break out the 85 f1.8 or 55 f1.8. Great video. Thank you!

    Finally moved over to the A7III from my A6000. My kit was finally completed yesterday when I snagged a 24mm 1.4 gm at a local camera shop... got there just in time since they were sellin like hot cakes. Spent all yesterday exploring Boston and im really happy I watched this video because you put the 24 on the map for me. I love the shots I got! I also run the ziess 55mm and the 70-200 (2.8) because when I do sports photography it is usually low light. Thanks for not only pushing me in the direction of the 24 but also the A7III... of course I am now broke but at least I get really great pictures.

Yea, it's a bunch of lenses and I'm using 2 bodies, A9 and A7iii. A7iii on a gimbal with the 24 1.4 like you, but I have he 70-200 on the A9 for a lot of street/city work. It's a great street lens. You can get more candid photos/video because you're not right up in their face.

  • @sizzlemann

    @sizzlemann

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@chrisbrockhurst I find that the A7III is just a tad warmer for photographs. But I use the A7iii mostly for video and use HLG and then match to the A9's standard (since it's the only profile) if I use the A9 for any B-roll. Of course you can get any color you want in post. If you get a chance to use an A9, I highly recommend it. It's really great for sports and weddings. Shooting silently has been awesome. No noisy shutter clicks. Also, you can use a fast lens and go from inside low light to outside bright light and not have to use a ND filter or change aperture. Just flip that shutter dial to 1/32000 and you still get that creamy bokeh from the 1.4 or 1.8 lens. Not to mention that 20 fps for that once in a lifetime moment. I could go on but I think you get the point.

Now I am about strip it all back to have 24GM, new 35 1.8, 55 1.8, 85 1.8. I may keep the 70-200 for events but letting go the 16-35 GM as I simply never go ultra wide anymore. Star eater issue, is where the noise reduction (even when disabled in camera with long exposure NR) clones out actual stars, smaller dimmer ones thinking that they're noise. Not a lens issue. What you may be thinking of is astigmatism and aberrations (purple/cyan fringing, bird shaped stars near the edge of the frame). It plagued the gen 2 bodies, one of the workarounds was shooting in continuous shooting mode, which would disable the algorithm for baked in noise reduction. Hope this helps.

    I'm a realtor, and a kinda sorta videographer. I shoot all my own listings. I used a Sigma 14mm ART F1.8. It's amazing for RE. It's ultra wide - zero distortion, and so fast and bright that it makes homes feel like they're filled with sun and large. The F4 you mentioned I think is just a bit too dark for some homes.

  • @azvisuals

    @azvisuals

    I def agree with you. Sometimes you have the time to really set up with the tripod and light up the room properly. But I find that most realtors or homeowners don't have that much time and rush you through the property. That's when the F4 just doesn't cut it. I used to shoot with the 12-24 F4 but have switched to the Tamron 17-28 2.8 which is working well. I can pump up the ISO on the a7iii and it will still produce clean files for MLS uploads.

  • @chrisbrockhurst

    I have never really found F4 to be a problem to be honest, the images delivered don't need to be super high res so even if there's a little noise its never an issue or even noticeable. That being said im waiting on the Tamron too and going to give it a go!

    Star eater had nothing to do with any specific lenses, it was (and for some parts still is) a software/firmware issue. It was a sort of "noice reduction feature" where anything shot with an exposure time longer than 3,2 seconds some sort of "secretly built in" NC would kick in and start.. well eating your stars. Other this minuscule detail, great video, thanks!

    Sold both 16-35 and the 24-70 f4s for three prime lenses and never regretted it. My first addition was the 55mm f1.8, awesome lens in all regards except for the uneven bokeh though. Then got the infamous 24mm f1.4 G master. Best investment ever. My go-to lens, it is light, simple, doesn’t distract you from taking that shot - and the image quality... sooo good. Also ma favourite lens ;) (And yes indeed, just buy it!!) Lastly, I got the Sony 90mm Macro. Can‘t yet comment on it, it has nice OSS but the focus is quite unreliable and f2.8 means you often find yourself in high ISO ranges. Buy one lens only? Get the 24mm 1.4 G master (I often use it in crop mode for 4k video on mr R II and get the besutiful beaaautiful 35mm)

    I have the 70-200 f4 and the 55/1.8. As for the 85mm, I keep my Batis, because it has OSS, which the Sony has not, and while for photos that wouldn't matter, for video it's important and, in my opinion, worth the price difference. As for the wide end, I have the Batis 25 f2, which I love, but the Sony 24/1.4 is superior, so perhaps one day I'll switch. I always liked the 16-35 f/4 Sony/Zeiss, and often I thought about buying it, but now there's the Sigma 14-24 f/2.8 which is tempting, especially for astro. Points in favour of the 16-35 f4: 1) it's lighter in weight and 2) it has OSS (although for wide shots it's not as decisive as with the 85mm)

    @@ScottMckeagan as a a6500 owner, I'd highly recommend the Sigma F1.4 Trios. All suprisingly affordable, light, and sharp. 16mm, 30mm, 56mm. as a zoom lens I love my 18-105mm. It's an amazing every day lens, works wonders for video because of how smooth the zoom is and the image stabilization. It also works great as a portrait lens in a pinch. zoom it out passed 70mm at F4 and you get beautiful bokeh and a sharp sharp image. Don't shy away from full frame lenses. After 5 years of playing around with 6 different APS-C Sony cameras, I finally took the plunge and purchased an A7C, my first full Frame camera. Sadly none of my lenses work so I have to spend money on new ones.

I just need to work out if the high ISO and decent autofocus of Sony is worth giving up the very small footprint of Panasonic. I shoot similar things to you, minus vlogs, but I really like the light weight and mobility of a GH setup. I'd probably go with the Tamron 28-75, Sony 85/1.8 and 70-200/4, or maybe the 24-105 for general shooting instead of the Tamron. I used to do everything with the Canon 24-105 and 70-200/4 in the 5D Mark II days, with the 35L for low light.

I figured if I had the 17-28mm and the 24mm G I’d always struggle to decide what to bring out. Convenience vs 1.4... Sometimes I keep thinking I want the hype of tamron. I'm still plugging away on the a7RII and a7II, so low-light performance is more of a concern for me. Then again... that 24GM is such a sexy lens, haha. Beyond that, my other go-to lenses are the 28 f/2, which I'm using less and less, but combined with the just OK 21mm converter it's the widest setup I got. I love the Tammy 28-75 for my walk around lens. I have a 40 year old Minolta 50mm f/1.4 that I adore, and on the telephoto end, the 100-400GM is my most used lens, along with another old Minolta 200mm f/2,8 which is crazy sharp for compressed landscapes.

    @@chrisbrockhurst I decided to get the 24GM instead of the 16-35. It arrives Tuesday and I'm crazy excited. As much as I'd love a 16-35, I just couldn't pass it up. I just got the 100-400 recently as well, so my wife has "grounded" me and I won't be getting the 16-35 for a loooong time haha.

    I've seen a few of your vids before and always liked them. Am strongly considering a jump to Sony for ALL my photo/vid needs (now sharing time between Canon for vid and Nikon for photos) and after watching the above and the hiking vid with your sweet little one, you have a new sub! Keep 'em comin'! Good stuff!

    Great choices. I’d agree with all of your choices. Only additions I’d add is a couple of vintage primes - not that they’re needed but they’re so much fun. My two fav at the moment are the Helios 44-2 58mm f2 and Zeiss 135 f3.5. Both creates images I’m always happy with - they have a look of their own.

    Great review! I’ve watched multiple reviews on each of these lenses before, but it’s great to see how they compare and contrast with one another and hear your opinions. I will be investing in the a7r iv, and am trying to decide which glass to start with 😊 This was extremely helpful, so thank you!!

    Hi Chris Excellent advice. Totally agree. Did my own research, having switched from Nikon 1 year ago. Now own these same 5 lenses. I sold 15 lenses including my excellent 3 f2.8 zoom trinity Nikkors. Initially I looked at similar f2.8 Sony GM glass (expensive and no real bulk/mass saving). Decided that f4 Sony glass was a very worthwhile saving on cost, bulk and heft Vs f2.8. I really think possibly even better for travel, with no discernible quality loss vs. f2.8. Occasionally when needing low light/fast capability I find I can switch to 24mm f1.4 or F1.8 in 55mm or 85mm prime. So I totally agree with your recommendation - it's an awesome 'bunch of five'. I had also bought a 28mm f2. Not bad, pretty compact but don't use it much, if at all, after buying 24mm f1.4. I also now shoot a 24-105mm f4 when I want a 'one lens' lighish solution - travel light, don't need longer tele or low light capability. Might also pack my 24 or 55 to help out when light levels fall in evening, but honestly I have been impressed by how good and versatile the f4 Sony 24-105 is. Certainly it's better than my old equiv. Nikkor 24-120mm. Sony still don't do fast ultra wide prime, so I'm occasionally shooting a 12mm Loawa f2.8 - surprisingly low distortion, but slow to use as manual only. Next glass investment will be a Sony tele zoom, probably 200-600mm for sports, which for my needs just edges the more expensive 100-400mm GM. - I can't justify the (extortionate) faster 400 or 600 primes for occasional sport or nature subjects.

    Great video Chris, really appreciate your time and input on this subject. I've done what I think a lot of photography fanatics do and bought what I think would be great and can afford, giving me a mishmash of lenses. I have the 16-35mms f4 and not used it much, but I'm going to now. Also have 24-105mms f4 and love it. More recent the 20mm f1.8, currently my most used. Love it. I have the Sony 85mms 1.8, fab lens. Very recently getting into vintage lenses, the Minalta 55mms 1.7, Minalta 135mms and the Tokina 80-200mms f4.5 not had chance to test this yet. Would love the 55mm you spoke of.... Thanks Chris, your one of the best out there.

    After owning several 85s I found the 85/1.4 GM to be the best one, especially for cars, the way things transition from in to out of focus is super natural I want the Tamron 17-28, I just hope not to be too disappointed. Tested the samyang 18 2.8 and it renders beautifully!

    Mate great video as ever, the one thing you missed was that the 55 1.8 manual focus is a nightmare. It’s the lens I have on my camera more than any other but for weddings where I shoot manual focus it’s near unusable. When you turn the bezel it’s slow, slow.... fast, crap I’ve missed it. Wedding photos perfect wedding video... I’m looking at a manual cine lens. The 85 1.8 focus is fine manual strangely. I have the same lenses except I desire the 24 1.4 at present. Thanks for video

    yeh the focus acceleration is definitely frustrating when using it in manual
