The Best Lavalier Microphone for DJI Mic? 6 Sound Tested

Overall I do like the DJI Mic, it seems to do a decent job overall, but for $329 I'm not sure why a set of lapel mics and an industry standard coiled cable weren't included. There are lavalier microphones that work with this, but why didn't DJI make their own? I for one would have bought them. I like things simple.

    Okay, my curiosity got the best of me and I just tried the Shure MVL mic. I tried 3 different headphones and 2 different PC speakers and there was a _slight_ and I mean _slight_ difference between the Shure and the Saramonic, but I still preferred the Saramonic or Power DeWise sound/tone. The Shure was a bit "dryer", not as much lower range, and the volume was a bit softer. No interference though so that's a bonus. The cable on the Shure was tiny and I worry about it getting damaged easily as you are pulling it in and out of shirts and jackets with zippers, and the price at $69 is more than double the Saramonic at $30. The Power DeWise was a very close second for me but since I have the Blink 500 Pro with 2 saramonic mics with windscreens and dead cats already I'll stick with that for now. Wish the Power DeWise would shorten the cable a bit, 6' makes me wrap up the extra in my pocket, which is a bit inconvenient. 🤙🤙

    The Power DeWise Professional Lav sounded best to my ears, and I feel was the closest to just using the DJI device. The last mic would be a close second. Thank you for doing the tests for these. I was considering a purchase of the DJI audio system and this was a big help.👍

    Thanks for sharing, glad it helps! About where I'm sitting as well, though when I walked around with the Power DeWise it seemed to pick up a lot of little "ticks" or light pops when it did the typical jiggling around while walking. Seems really sensitive to the high end "S and T" emphasis, almost a bit to sensitive, maybe... Most people probably won't notice I imagine. The DJI mic so far is intuitive to use and has some really nice features, wish it were a bit less expensive considering the sketchy interconnect cable and the lack of lapel mic, but the recording onboard is a dandy backup feature that will be really useful. 🤙

    Thank you so much for this test! The powerdewise sounded the best and the clearest so far, but also comes with higher noise level. Also the saramonic is about the same with lower noise, yet I feel a little bit of “box” effect. For a natural voice most likely I’d choose the powerdewise

I just got the DJI MIC system, and was amazed to see that for the price, those Lavalier microphone (included with any other similar wireless system) were not included. I also tested several lapel mics with the dgi mic. I did not find any problems using the Rode Lavalier Go mic. I also test a Diety lapel mic along with Power DeWise and Sony and the lapels that came with the Comica XD2 Pro set. I was pleasantly surprised by the Power DeWise mics. I thought they all sounded similar but would rank the Diety mic first (but much more expensive) and the Power Dewise second in my testing, The Rode is also expensive (comparatively) but not superior to the Power Dewise. I will be testing my mics more in the future.

    Great to see/hear these tests ( as well as Stewarts test on his channel ) Does the Shure and MVL come out tops because they have shielding on the cables…?? Ps..Love the part of the intro where the drone falls in the water behind you🤣👌

  • @AlienDrones

    @AlienDrones

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the kind words! IMHO, DJI only mentions (not recommend) the Shure due to the lack of interference in their tests I'm assuming because of the shielding (similar to the Saramonic and the Power DeWise), not overall sound quality or value. I finally did receive the Shure MVL and tested it and I expected it to be better for the price, overall second to the Saramonic sound test, so I returned it. The low end seemed artificially removed in an attempt to make the higher end more audible, but because of this it was "muted" and thin to my ear, and needed a boost of about 3 db to get it to the level of the Saramonic level (for comparison).

    I'm using the Saramonic mic fairly consistently and have had no real issues with normal movement. I usually adjust the volume up about 2db and that can either be adjusted ahead of time on the mic config or after in post. Not a big deal either way, and just my preference and could be my amp on the Sony camera. When I walked around with the Power DeWise though it seemed to pick up a lot of little "ticks" or light "pops" when it did the typical jiggling around while walking. Seems really sensitive to the high end "S and T" emphasis, a bit to sensitive under normal use IMO, and the result is distracting and difficult to edit out. If nobody is moving though it seems fine...

    I normally listen to my KZread videos on my tablet. For this video I also listened on my tablet with Bluetooth earbuds and on my desktop computer with the volume higher than normal. The only mic I didn't like was the DJI. It sounded kind of hollow. There was some differences in the other ones but for the most part to me not significant enough to affect my enjoyment of a video. Now I may be wrong, (More like probably lol) but it appeared that your best sound came before the test and I assume you were using a more studio type microphone.

    This is a fantastic video and much needed information for those of us considering this system. Personally I use a 32 bit separate recorder and sync in post but sometimes it'd be nice to have proper audio attached. As for sound I liked the Power DeWise, didn't like the Purple Panda which is ironic because that's the mic I personally use with my zoom. I am a bit curious why using the built in DJI mic would be a "best case scenario" considering it doesn't appear to be a very high quality mic. Thanks again for sharing your findings!

    Thanks for your feedback! I mentioned the DJI Mic itself would be the "best case" in the regard that the mic itself would add it's own noise but you're right, _baseline_ would probably have been a better choice of words, assuming that adding a lapel mic would add a wire, an additional connection and potentially some additional interference pickup. Figured it wouldn't be fair to subconsciously compare a wireless mic to the studio wired mic... 🤙

    Thanks! From what I can tell the camera isn't the source of the interference, seems to be other devices, but the worst offender is actually the DJI Receiver itself (the part usually on the camera). If just the transmitter (mic) is used stand alone (no receiver on the camera, just using the safety track internally recorded), the interference is greatly reduced if not eliminated. Also, I did a little 2 min follow-up video recording outside with the final 2 mics, if you haven't already, may want to check it out. kzread.info/dash/bejne/q2Wgw6WTm7i7ndI.html . Жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the kind words, and that's a good question! I did this for a while with a 20' cable on the lav mic. First issue is it does increase the possibility of interference being introduced by the cable, but the deal breaker for me was when I tugged the cable by accident and tipped the tripod over with my brand new camera attached. Really scary and a valuable lesson. Also, the wireless lav does give an option to wander around a bit and be more mobile (walking, talking and waving hands, etc.) that isn't practical with a cord. Depending on the device, you can plug it in if it is close, but you can also use a boom mic if your close and it would probably sound better and the mic wouldn't be visible in the shot. IMHO anyway... 🤙

  • @luabella_

    @luabella_

    Жыл бұрын

    @Alien Drones That makes sense! I would be more static in my shots, but without a dij, it would be limiting for future shooting. It is better to have the option. I didn't realize a cord and a longer cord at that could create added interference. I assume since these are smaller devices with smaller cables than a cable on a Shure SMB7, which would be much thicker and insulated, it makes sense. I was thinking of using wireless pop lav clip on mics, so no wires and without a receiver. Thats what l was thinking as a starting place. Thanks for clarifying and answering my question. I appreciate it. 🙏🙏🙏 And ya, great video! It held my attention! 😊😊😊

    Thanks for the feedback! Unfortunately, I sent them both back. The Power DeWise sounded a touch tinny to my ears, and when you walked or moved at all it picked up and amplified every little pop or crackle, it was very distracting. The Sure was decent, but in my tests I found it had some artificial modification to the lower end and higher end and a couple of DB softer than the rest, but overall not bad but pricy for what you get. I thought for the extra cash I would be really impressed but it wasn't anything special for the price and the thin little cord freaked me out a bit. Honestly I know the people who do the recording are really "sensitive" to what the sound is like, but I've found the general public doesn't really care that much, as long as it's not "bad"... • @AlienDrones

    @AlienDrones

    Hello! I don't think so. I think it is a combination of the very strong transmission signal of the DJI Mic because they wanted it to transmit a long distance without cutting out, and the type of shielding on the Rode mic wire are just incompatible a bit. DJI even had problem with their own interconnect cable and had to replace a bunch of them, so the strong signal just needs to be dealt with differently...

    I'm the guy who purchased your wireless audio gear during your sale. Did you try the lav mics included in those, or did you get the DJI Mic system after the sale? Curious if they got a fail before I check. I also have the DJI mics and after 3 months had one of them fail to operate. Plugging it into the PC would not allow me to copy files off of it. Bad news, since I got a little lazy and left some stuff on them to work on later. I checked the forum to see if I was doing something wrong and found another case with the exact same problem. One of the mics had stopped working when plugged into a PC. I tried different cables, ports and PC's. One mic would show up immediately upon connection. The other wouldn't. Amazon wouldn't process a return without a restock fee, so I turned to DJI. They issued an RMA asking for only the one mic be returned and not the whole package. They received it on Dec 21st and it's current status one Dec 27 is "Under Repair". Here's the evaluation of the unit they give: "Transmitter Main Board was malfunctioned, which caused unable to record, tried to retrieve files but the transmitter will not show up in the computer" A friendly FYI and something to watch out for if you decide to keep the DJI system.

    I did try the Sure MVL (note in the comments a few months ago) and the Sure MVL was definitely softer (the quietest of any I tested), and I needed to turn up the gain in post or "transmitter" gain in the DJI settings itself, but any amplification added afterwards due to the MVLs lack of internal amplification comes at the compromise of additional background noise, so that's just going to be the nature of that mic. The Power DeWise and the Saramonic were MUCH louder (Power DeWise was 2db louder than the Saramonic in my test to match the DJI native volume) than the Sure MVL in my test of one. Not sure if you saw the outdoor test I did on these two but may be worth a listen, maybe one of those might better match your setup and ears... kzread.info/dash/bejne/q2Wgw6WTm7i7ndI.html

    Shure MVL will NOT work with DJI Mic 2 (you need a TRS adapter as Rode SC3) / But great with the mic 1.

    I wasn't overly impressed with the Shure MVL, not terrible but fairly dry to my ears in comparison. 🤙

    Interesting. I thought the power dewise had to be powered. I sent back my dji system because I couldn't find a decent lav mic. I have the power dewise mic, but never tried it since I couldn't find any info about turning on mic power... 😮

    Thanks for sharing! Nope, no power needed. I just finished a _Final 2_ test video using the Saramonic and the PowerDeWise lav mics. I was surprised how different they sounded out of the studio walking through the woods, both sounding even better IMO. Publishing Sunday (tomorrow) or Monday... Have to say, I was skeptical and was not giving it a pass on anything, but now I'm becoming more and more impressed with the DJI Mic. Used it for a dual interview and many lav mic attached setups and a couple with just the DJI itself and it has been solid. I love the safety track with automatic recording and nothing is needed but the one transmitter.

    but to be honest, we would all be hard pressed to tell the differences if they were shot entirely in 1 video each. They are very close and differences negligible

    Agreed, sequential isn't how we listen and the final ones are all decent by themselves, more preference than anything...
