I can't believe Jarrod got a laptop with those specs for just $400 that's a steal! Josh's macbook was great too but I would go for Jarrod's one for gaming and we need a part 2 so Andrew can redeem himself.

The problem is regional pricing. The cheapest M1 macbook air in my region is 1200 USD new. Apple doesn't have a refurb program here, and used ones go for around 800 USD.

The beauty of Forwarding Services nowdays is that we can buy from anywhere in the world. Got my laptop from Hong Kong through a carrier and even after import taxes and fees, it saved me $900 compared to what I would have payed in my region. If regional pricing is the issue, then simply don't buy from that region.

Not to mention Windows 11 is a pain to run on 7th gen or older. I'd use Linux at that point.
The next challenge should be for the best $700 (Gaming) computer, to exclude apple laptops and to account for the region difference.
The second hand market can be a gold mine indeed. Patience and luck are key indeed, and sometimes it can backfire.
Really enjoyed this competition, it's very helpful!
love this collab, that was really interesting!
This put a huge smile on my face! Great job, guys!
This a really awesome video. I can't believe the amount of time that went into it. Kudos🙌🤝
These kind of videos are great. If I recall correctly on the first video, Josh was able to get the price down by claiming it was for charity, which in his case it is. It's a bit of a cheat because the average user isn't going to be able to do that. Plus, he had to go to a sketchy area to pick it up. Andrew and Jarrod used eBay -- no sketchy locations, no special circumstances artificially lowering the price. Jarrod seems like the real winner here.
@JustJoshTech
Жыл бұрын
That is not correct. Clarrification: I told them it was going to a good home. I told my viewers (you guys) that that statement is true, as I will donate this to charity. I donate many of my laptops.
considering that this video is about the best cheap laptop, there are so many metrics in the evaluation which should not be here. this is the best bang-for-buck device we are talking about. So someone who can only spend sub-400 USD on a computer probably wont be looking at the trackpad click accuracy or the biometric login or even how loud the fans are. Jarrod got a really good CPU and very good GPU for that price. He should have won.
@ahannanable
Жыл бұрын
I also think that battery life should be included in the evaluation as a metric. There are a lot of students that are looking for a great portable laptop in this price range that can last for hours. So by not considering the battery life, you have definitely ignored that whole segment.
@STORMFIRE07
Жыл бұрын
@@ahannanable Josh mentioned in the first part that it’s not possible to include battery life tests, as they bought the laptops used, and depending on how careful or careless the previous owner was with the battery charging and usage, it may have completely different battery life
@ahannanable
Жыл бұрын
@@STORMFIRE07 well that is not a good excuse. This video is all about getting the most from the money. I might also get some very good laptop but with some hardware defects for example faulty graphics card. Battery life test would have given the complete picture of what exactly we can get in that budget. Honestly other metrics were not really important and giving points to those is just purely unfair.
@ahannanable

I mean macbook still have won that round because there is a very good chance that the battery life on the macbook would be superb but still that would be a more meaningful comparison than what has been done in this video

Ha what would the battle be?
I would like to see the 1000usd laptops, and it would be cool to have specific themes like video editing laptop, gaming, 3d modeling, vr laptop...
8:27. What Jarrod said is key, as long as you know what you want and looking for. You'll be faster at securing a deal than others. The amount of things I've gotten for a steal is extremely rewarding. With those who still have maybe a generation or two old and want a bit of extra power, look into what Jarrod did with Throttle Stop and Msi Afterburner. it'll provide a good performance boost without spending a dime. Also, consider repasting with PTM7950. That will help with sustained performance.
Great and fantastic video. I have learned a lot.
This was a great video idea. I'm a sub for both Josh and Jarrod's channel so it was interesting to see how they went about their purchases, and both guys went with the kind of laptops that they recommend. With Josh absolutely loving his Macbooks and Jarrod with his gaming laptops. That said, my personal winning pick is Jarrod. How do you get an 11th gen i5, 16gb ram, with 3050 Ti for $400?? Not to mention the condition it's in, is almost flawless. Josh, your M1 Macbook is a solid machine but there's just so much more you can do on the Gigabyte. Hell, I bought a brand new Zephyrus G14 (16gb ram, 3050 Ti) around 8 months ago with similar specs as the Gigabyte and spent 3x the amount of money. Suggestion for the next competition: build your own PC for under $500!
@CO8848_2

M1 wins over gigabyte any day of the week. The only thing g5 does better is gaming and more ports. But the m1 wins in every other category, battery life alone is a revolution in itself. Then the size, the weight, no fan noise, the screen are all so much better for daily user experience. The in specific use cases, the m1 is a phenomenal video editing one in its native 10bit 422 acceleration, and much better for programming because it's native unit support. In my household, the m1 is the go to every kid goes for as well, unless they want to play snow runner.

Great video! The next competition/challenge should be a hardware (including desk setup)z/software combo aimed at a specific audience (e.g. students, work from home pro, entrepreneur, ...) with a topline budget depending on the audience (e.g. student < work from home pro). While hardware is a big chunk of the budget, the software can play a significant role as well to complete a comprehensive solution. The challenge should include at least two ecosystems (Microsoft, Apple).🤔
Thanks it was enjoyable. But looking forward for new laptops below 1k

Normally like your videos, and this was a nice project! However, I don't quite understand why you went for that crazy MacBook deal, as it's very unlikely that anyone else will get a similar deal, so it doesn't help a lot for people who actually want a 400 dollar laptop.

The laptop basically comes with a free stand XD I CANT classic jarod
"only issues is ports"? I would need more ports than M1 Air offers. And the Air offers only one external monitor.
I got a MacBook M1 Pro whit 16gb ram and 512 storage for €850. What do you think? Is it a steal?
Hi, Can someone please help me out? I'm confused between these rtx 3050 laptops Lenovo ideapad gaming 3 i5 12450H 16/512 (2023 new design) AND Asus Tuf A15 R7 4800h 8/512 (2020) at Same price. Do A budget Desktop War next time say $800 dollar limit that would be great!

not everyone has time to sink countless hours into a search. Time is money, in this sense, the $400 mark does not include opportunity cost. It also requires barter skills and luck to get that M1 Air this cheap.

How about something new for 400?
Жыл бұрын
Purchasing a used laptop for $400 is almost always a superior choice. In fact, it's difficult to conceive of a situation where buying a new laptop for $400 would be preferable. Perhaps the only exception might be as a birthday gift for a child, so that you'd had the original, pretty packaging for unwrapping experience (emotional reasons), but even then, I would first attempt to convince them to have a used but higher-quality model. With a $400 new laptop, you'll certainly encounter severe compromises, in terms of comfort or performance. In contrast, a used machine at the same price could offer much much better value. And a $400 new laptop tends to depreciate in value far more rapidly than a used one and aftermarket price and demand is abysmal. Even though a new laptop may initially have a nicer visual appeal, over time it will inevitably show signs of use, too. And many companies take large quantities of used laptops to stock which have been previously leased to banks and other businesses who have pre-planned to swap them to newer models later and thus preserve their original appearence by using them in docks and so they look nearly as new. I know this because as an IT specialist working for a local municipality, and the owner of my own IT services company, I consistently purchase such laptops for my users, customers and also to myself. It's simply the better value proposition. The only exception to this rule is when a client is so affluent that even suggesting a used machine would likely be perceived as an insult.

@yeah, I'd probably only say "buy new" if you're looking to buy something that's on the bleeding edge of specs and includes a warranty, or if it comes with a large discount and a warranty if it's in the low-medium range.
when people said 400 dollar laptop i'm pretty sure they meant "NEW".

I learned 2 things from this video. First you need to know what you want exactly and be patient. Second I live in a very bad place for this. With this budget Im happy if I see a gaming laptop with a 1060. Im not a Mac guy but the best I saw is a 2017 Macbook pro 13 with touchbar, but the rest is same age Macbook Airs. My advice: dont buy laptops in Hungary :)

andrew yikes on that laptop
I really like the video idea, and it's very entertaining to watch, however, it feels like you were so focused on winning the game that you forgot to think how this video could help anyone. Unless your goal was just entertainment. I mean, the video is about buying a laptop for 400$ but most people with that budget won't be able to get a macbook for 400$. You wouldn't have gotten it either if you haven't said it was for donation.

2nd hand is always the way to go, I buy and sell locally quite a bit and $400 for a MBA M1 in that condition is pretty average. I picked up a M2 MBA for $480, a M1 Pro 14 inch for $660, a ROG Advantage 6800M for $380. Just know what to look for and don't meet at gas stations, I typically meet at Starbucks. Also, don't forget Apple warranty is tied to the serial number, so often times newer machines have most of the warranty left and require no additional paperwork or receipts. Gret vid Josh!
