The subjects are strangers to me, just as they are to the viewer of the finished work. Being a visual artist, I use my eyes to learn about the person, and in the process find commonalities between us.
Knitting (a form of binary code) is included because of its continuous flow of fibers that mirrors our interconnectedness as people.
These pieces are created using new and old machines. Incorporating technology in the process reflects my life with metal implants; as I am a balance between organic and inorganic so should my art.

I’m going to share a very special story and part of my art process. My knitting machine, but not just any machine this is the first machine that I had and it was used to create pieces like this.
I got this machine from a gallery I used to work in. The space had been previously been an antique store. One day I was organizing supplies in the basement and there was this pile of antiques that were left over. I was moving them into the corner when I happened upon this mint green metal case. I opened it and given the line of latch hooks I figured it must be related to fiber arts. I looked it up on my phone which revealed it was a knitting machine. I was already a regular hand-knitter at this time so this was very exciting to me. I immediately asked the landlord about the antiques and he apologized stating that he had been meaning to throw them away so they wouldn’t be in our way! I explained that there was an item in the pile that was an art supply and he said to take it. He was just going to trash it anyway. I was thrilled. The machine was so interesting. All the levers and buttons. How could this metal mechanical contraption make soft gentle knit fabric? I played with it from time to time for a few years and during this time I started to incorporate knitting into my artwork. I wanted to expand into creating knit animations. However, creating that many images with the method I was doing by hand would take months. So I sat down for a week and learned about this machine. I learned how to maintain it, how to make a sweater on it, and then how to fiddle with it just so as to create the kind of artwork I had envisioned.
This machine is a Brother Profile 551 and was made in the late 50’s early 60’s. It’s a single-bed machine and all metal. I love this machine and think its a great first machine for several reasons.
It can do so many things. You can make sweaters, socks, lace, colorwork. It’s a very versatile machine.
I often see these available for good prices 2nd hand. I have a duplicate of this machine that only cost $150.
Being all metal these machines ship well. I've seen several machines of different models be shipped 2nd hand. The plastic machines from the 70s and 80’s almost arrived cracked but these machines have always arrived perfectly.
They are simply mechanical. So maintenance is easy. There are no electronic components to update.
Theres few items to replace if they’re missing and those tools are easy to find online.
This machine has the same capabilities as the new Singer Lk150 that you can buy today in stores but that machine is plastic so not as durable and costs between $4-500. Plus it’s not as cute as this one.
The one con is that because it’s a simple machine you’ll have to do more small stitch transfers for more complex designs, unlike the later knitting machine models that have punchcards or electronics that will switch colors and follow patterns more on their own.

I just found a mint, never been used, in the box one on Facebook Marketplace for $100. Darn skippy I snapped that up. Haven't set it up yet, but as soon as I finish my spring cleaning, it will be my new obsession! I'm a crocheter, not a knitter, but I'm looking forward to spreading my wings.

I just got my hand on one of these, with an 8 push button system. it's amazing! it can do so much. Also, I used to be an animator, and seeing you do animation in Knits is simply mind blowing!! talk about a love for the craft!

Someone my father knows acquired lots of yarn, fabric, & one of multiple knitting machines. She asked if I wanted it. It’s a 1962 Brother. I can’t wait to learn how to put it together and use it.

I got the exact same machine model for $ 20 in the early 80s. Also my first knitting machine! It's still my work horse, though I've several more machines. Have knit everything from cotton washcloths to large afghans and wool blankets on it.

My Mother had one of these when we lived in Japan in the early 60's. My Dad was in the Air Force and we were stationed in Japan for three years. I would not own my a machine until 25 years later. Great video, and thank you.

I just bought a 585 and by going through everything in the box it seems it was owned by a woman on an Air Force base in Japan. Her project notes are incredible, it’s been so special going through all the things in the box of odds and ends it came with

I have the brother KH580, very similar to yours but with the pushbutton patterning (mid-sixties). I adore it, it's so mechanical and heavy metal! note: mine has the same clamps, they are what came with that series of machines.

Nice machine, you're very lucky! I found one of these, a brand new Singer still wrapped in paper and box from the 1970s, at an op shop. Gifted it to my brother and his girlfriend because they were artsy fartsy. They had no idea what to do with it and sold it. I actually wished I had shipped over to my place. Hopefully the new owners are creating awesome with it 😃

Hello, Thank you so much! It’s a type of cast on for machine knitting (every other needle cast-on or utility cast on) It’s not as pretty as an e-wrap cast on but it’s fast and efficient and since I’m creating artwork on a function garment this works perfectly. Thanks again!
Can you make a video on maintaining the knitting machine? or give me some tips!?, (what oil to use if need to use any ect) im hopefully getting my hands on one in a couple of hours if all goes well! , its abit grubby and been sitting in an attict

After watching your video I realize I have the same machine. The instruction booklet didn't have the make or model on it. I tried using it last year after a bit of maintenance. I replaced the sponge bar. The carriage doesn't move smoothly and I'm sure it needs some oil. What kind of lubricant are you using? Thanks for this video!

I use LPS . It’s nice because it won’t build up over time. Yeah I oil mine after every big project.

Hello! In this case I made the pattern with an app title Stitch Sketch. I have another video on my channel where I use a Brother KGH930 with Img2Track. I can also use DesignAKnit to transfer images but it’s more expensive and has a steep learning curve.
Maybe you can help me with a question I can't seem to find an answer to. I would love to know if these machines are capable of doing a Jersey Knit or using fiber other yarn? I would love a way to do a linen or wool Jersey Knit fabric panels that have a smaller/tighter weave. My goal is to make a natural stretch fabric from the linen to wear in base layer garments under the stretch wool garments. Jersey Knit linen and wool fabric is prohibitively expensive and so are the commercial knitting machines!

Hello! Thanks for the question. This is whats called a standard gauge 4.5 machine. It can knit yarn weights 0 (lace weight) up to 2 (sport weight). The center knob on the carriage controls tension and can create a tighter or looser knit fabric. I don’t currently have any lace weight yarn to experiment with otherwise I’d test it for you. You can use different fibers in the machine but you’d want to avoid any super fluffy or extra ridged yarn (like a wire or plastic for example) because there’s a lot of moving parts in the machine and they will jam up the machine. Linen should be o.k. Though

I still have absolutely no idea how this machine produces that complexity of artwork .-. Like, do you load in each color for each row? Is it.. an automated system based on art you created in the software? I don’t understand

Thanks so much! I have two methods I’ve done picture knitting. Those are the wrong clamps for a single bed machine. Those are used when setting up with a ribber. Certain techniques will be more difficult with them.

Thanks! I animate the knitting by creating a bunch of individual frames photographing them and them piecing them together into an animation. I’ve created knit animations that include up to 100 individually knit frames.
Which side do you put your colour wool for picture knitting because your to fast but very good thanks

Hello! Each color I work with will pass across the bed 1 time. So when I start I alternate which side of the bed each color will be. So for example I’ll put my first color on the left my second color on the right etc.. When I start knitting I’ll pick up color 1 from the left move it across the bed then park color 1 on the right and feed color 2 into the carriage. Please let me know if you need any further explanation.
