The Best Kind of Microphone Pop Filter? (...and what to do if you don't have one.)

Музыка

Stop popping those Ps! Get yourself a decent pop filter if you don't have one already. And if you already have one... maybe get a better one?
Justin Colletti compares the most popular options for pop filter styles, goes over their strengths and weaknesses-and offers some totally free DIY solutions as well.
From conventional cloth pop filters with their huge, sound dampening black dots and noisy goosenecks to more modern metal designs, to simple free tricks to avoid plosives at no cost, hear all these options and more.
Spoiler alert: Justin's personal favorite pop filter is made by JZ Microphones, sponsor of this video. Not the cheapest option in the world, but super sturdy and quite transparent, both in sound and from a visual perspective.

The sound difference is not big enough to bother. The real issue with pop filters is the gooseneck and how well it can be mounted on a stand with a mic. I wish you'd show that instead. There have been times where I would use a second stand just for the pop filter because it was that annoying. Also you didn't try the type you can mount on a mic (like a shield) which are quite small and have no gooseneck. I didn't try them yet myself but I think I'll do that before buying another one on a gooseneck, expensive or not.

If you're using $3000 mic in a treated room then 'saving' $50 for 'not much difference' is a v false economy. If you're doing youtube vids etc on a blue yeti, absolutely agree. Both scenarios are valid and you have to draw your own cost/performance line between the 2. As far as goose necks go, I'm all about the separate stand, any pro studio will likely have a separate stand - pops and even non-pop impacts vibrate the screen...the neck and off to the mic. This is also why I'm dubious of the ones that attach directly to the mic ie Hook - I've tested and while it's at the extremes they are physically coupled to the mic so...physics. Something else worth remembering is enough distance between the screen and the mic - screens disrupt airflow rather than blocking. Having the screen 1cm from the mic and 10cm from the mouth is the wrong way round - air is still moving around the filter and that close it still risks creating noise.

Thanks, Justin! I've been using an old threadbare t-shirt stretched over a wire hanger for um...13 years now? :)

This is a really cool comparison. It makes me curious if there would be a way to do this as a null test. Theoretically if you recorded a sentence with some plosives, then played it into the mic again from a speaker, both with and without a pop filter, you could null test those to identify the contribution of the pop filter specifically (and maybe put the pop filters on a different mic stand so you can be certain the mic never moves when you change them out). That said, I would imagine that if the sound for the null test is coming from a speaker rather than an actual mouth, the air might behave differently around the pop filter, so the results might not be very meaningful. Have you ever tried to do a null test comparison this way before? Also, do you have any idea if, or to what extent, the difference between having a loudspeaker vs person as the sound source would affect the results of such a test?

Plosives are a result of air blasts produced by the mouth (lips). A speaker will not produce a plosive.

HELLO.. Is a pop filter used for karaoke outside? And what kind of professional wired microphone should I use for my karaoke portable speaker?

For outdoor applications, you probably want a foam windscreen that attaches to the mic to cut down on wind noise. Hope that helps!

Do I rob a bank or make fire beats? That’s a question I ask myself every morning.. also, I think you need a little distance from the mic when using a pencil. You need that space to let the air split and go in opposite directions.
