A detailed review of the most popular interchangeable knitting needle sets out there
In this video, I take a close up look at the interchangeable knitting needle sets from HiyaHiya, ChiaoGoo, Knitter's Pride and addi. Which one has the sharpest tips? Which ones the best join to the cable? Which one is the most durable, and which offers the best bang for your buck?
Interchangeable needle sets can be a great way to actually save money and always have the right needle at home for a new project. But, not every set is made for everyone. I don't think there is THE best set out there - rather there are sets better suited for lace-knitters or speed knitters, etc.
So, my goal here is not to tell you which interchangeable knitting needle set is the best. Instead, I want to provide you with all the facts and details you need to know to make your own decision.

Also a tip if you lose those keys. You can use a standard safety pin. They fit in the holes (with the exception of the lace/mini sizes)

For Chiaogoo IC needles, standard T-pins fit the keyholes for most of their needle tips except those in the very small diameters. After I got my Chiaogoo IC set I purchased a box of T-pins. I wish the keyholes for all IC sets were of a standard size, so that T-pins would fit into all of them.

I only have experience with ChiaGoo needles; I once had to buy a size 10 60" circular needle to complete a cape for my wife. Having used Susan Bates and Boye needles for decades, I was not prepared for the upgrade in quality. In my experience, the ChiaGoo needles don't get dull at all; I've actually sustained a knitting injury on my right index finger, which taught me not to push the needle out of the stitch, and to keep a few Band-Aids in my project bags. The cable is strong, and it doesn't kink up. Also, the join between the cable and the needles doesn't affect my knitting speed (I focus more on accuracy than speed, but I'm not exactly the slowest knitter out there). The store-bought needles always have some sort of bend to them, which catch onto the upcoming stitches without fail, and having to reposition these stitches takes time that I don't have. I'm sure the other needles are top-notch, but I like my ChiaGoo needle, and will be purchasing the full set. Merry Christmas to me!

My mom got me the ChiaGoo set for Christmas a while back, aside from the fact there were some accessories that I need for it to be completed, I absolutely love them and it's no wonder why they're so expensive. P. S. My mom found this one on mercari for $80, and I really want to get the mini set this year and you can find them on eBay alot cheaper.

Hi Norman. I love your videos. I own some of each of these interchangeables you have shown and also knitpicks. I specifically am a mostly lace knitter with small hands. I prefer wood needles because there is less chance for the silk or other slick yarns to fall off the needle. I own quite a few fixed circular needles that are metal, usually addi, but most of my needles are wood or acrylic. I recently purchased chaio goo very tiny set. They are awesome. Thank you for your videos. God bless

Thank you so much for the going through the good and not so good of each of these needles. I ordered a set of the Knitters Pride Nova Platina because of your review. I am really excited about working with the needles to speed up my knitting. With one project in particular, speed in knitting is of the essence. I was also able to pick up speed with your demonstration of knitting English Style but picking instead of throwing. A little clumsy for me at first, but with the recommendation of knitting slow and methodically until my fingers got used it the new method, did the trick. Can’t thank you enough. Take care. I've tried Addi, ChiaoGoo, and Knitters Pride (Where I live in NZ they're branded as Knit Pro though!), I have to say my ChiaoGoos definitely end up getting the most use. I'm mostly a lace knitter, so I tend to use smaller sizes and prefer longer/sharper tips, which is really something I find the ChiaoGoos have the best balance of, and I really struggle going back to any other cables after trying the memory-free cables. The fact their needles are split over 3 different cable sizes is a bit inconvenient at times, but considering how good the cables are and how smooth a transition they get because of that choice, I can live with having to but a few extra cables if I ever need them. One problem I haven't seen anyone really mention is that the coated brands get a bit of a weird filmy feeling to them if you don't use them for a while. It wipes off easily, but it's a quirk that comes with storing them in my experience. Addi's have a very distinct smell because of the materials they use as well, which may be a bit odd to some people. Both Addi and ChiaoGoo have had excellent replacement policies in my experience, if they break you can either go straight to the manufacturer or usually take them back to the store you bought them for a replacement and they'll deal with that step for you. I still absolutely love my KP's and Addi's, but I am definitely in a very strong long-term relationship with my Chiaogoo needles!

Thank you for this excellent overview of needle sets. I considered buying a set and pored over the various brands and borrowed some from friends to try out. For me, the join never feels as smooth as my non-interchangeables, the sets are very expensive, and most of the sets seem to be mostly large needles that I rarely use. So I ended up buying two individual needle pairs- a US sizes 4 and 6- and an assortment of cables. These are so useful for stitch holding and only a dollar or two. And, of course, have an existing assortment of DPNs and set cable needles. (Lykkes tend to be the ones I use most.). But that said, I'm a fairly novice knitter and love learning more and more. That's why your videos are so great!

The only problem I’ve ever had is one of the cables breaking loose from the metal attachment. I’ve now purchased 2 sets of Knit Picks and love them. Thank you for this video. I am a new knitter, and in love with knitting. I have the bamboo set of interchangeable knitting needles by Clover Takumi. I am am preparing to get a metal knitting set, and searched KZread to see if someone did a "review" of all the best ones and there you were.....Thank you. I appreciate the detail you put into going through the most important aspects, and I learned so much that I didn't know. Again, thank you. I think I am going to go with Chia because the clover has Twist Cables and they are easiest to "uncoil" the cable with when I knit, vs. the needles themselves having to twist. I am also considering the "sharper ones though" because that just makes the all the difference with my style. I think I will try a stand alone in each for some slouchy beanies I am knitting up for Christmas Presents and then make up my mind. Again....THANK YOU! Question? Do each have a Life Line hole?

Love this review! When I started to knit again after not knitting since I was a teenager in school I worked on a very big blanket (I know, crazy beginners project) so I got myself a few different needles in the same size but different brands and materials. Buying only a pair of each (6mm) let me try out a few before I settled for a what I liked best. I picked Chiaogoo. But I actually don't enjoy the red cables on chiaogoo (they unscrew for me even with tightener) so even when I eventually got a set, I got the plastic spin cables instead because i love that type. The red ones are my spare cables. AND a lot thanks to you mentioning in another video to pick the needles that fit you best, I recently got myself the (9-inch total) ADDI short sock circular needles, they're not as pointy as my chiaogoo so I love them for working on socks, especially in bigger sizes. This video sort of sums up that we should pick what WE like and not what a review says are best. So thank you! I feel so happy with my combination of needles now. 🧡Much love! ps. Now or the smallest sizes (2.mm and such) you now need to use the red Mini cable, so now there's 3 different cable sizes in Chiaogoo, wish they would combine the two sizes you mentioned to one.

I started knitting like 13 years ago, and I liked the click of the addi, I got the lace short tips, I liked they came with a 16” tip to tip. And I had heard so many times people having their needles unscrewing. Also back then in Canada chiagoo and hiya hiya weren’t around, I don’t know if they were as popular back then at least in Canada. It has saved me so much money, I invested pretty early as I had needed a different set of needles for my first three hats. I was like interchangeable was the way to go

The best review on these ever! I have cheap set if Boyle interchangeable and they sit in a drawer. The joins come loose too often and drop my stitches that they are useless. I want a good set even if it costs more. Your review covered all areas of my concern on these. I might just stay with solid joined needles even if over time it costs more. The problems of interchangeable will then be zero. Though they still can snap apart so no needle is perfect.

Thanks for another amazing video Norman! I sat and watched about 4 of yours today, back to back, while my husband provided commentary based on what he heard 🤣 I was actually REALLY surprised to find that my incredibly cheap circular Chinese needles that I bought on Wish a few years back have many of the qualities you'd look for in a luxury set! For one, they go from 2.0 mm to 7.0 mm, which is fantastic for me because I don't normally knit using larger sized needles and small needles seem to be harder to find. They're also coated in something, what I'm not sure, but they're the slickest needles I've ever used and they're definitely not just plain stainless steel like those Caron ones you'd find at Walmart. They also have the plastic coated metal cable in the middle! They're not interchangeable, of course, so I need to buy another set with a larger cable but when you can get 10 different sized needles for $9, who cares if you have to buy 2 or 3 different sets?! They don't have a sharp tip, however, and right now I'm limited by how long my cables are, which is why I'm looking into some interchangeable ones. I'm a tip pusher though, heh, so maybe that's a good thing! But it's really hard for me to pick my stitches with the blunted tip. Are there are cheap needles you've come across that have surprised you with their quality? The ChiaoGoo or Hiya Hiya sets seem like something I'd be interested in most of all but hoo boy, my budget is not amenable to those prices! So I'm interested to know if you have ever seen or heard about any listed on places like eBay or Wish that have surprised you...

  • @MissWayLucas

    @MissWayLucas

@@NimbleNeedles Thanks much for the reply! I didn't think about them producing stuff in the same factory but you're probably right on about that. The cables look very different in that you can absolutely see they're steel cables on mine but they're coated in translucent plastic (and yes, I absolutely love how springy they are). I went ahead and looked through mine last night and it turns out I actually got 12 sets and they're UK sizes, which is a bit confusing for me since I'm US, but I have to swap out sizes anyways since I tend to knit really tight. I also had no clue what these little plastic swatches with holes and numbers that were included in every needle set were til I watched this video yesterday (they're little needle size cards 🤣 and they all include tapestry needles as well) so thank you again for all the great information you provide in your videos; I've come to realize I have much much more to learn but thankfully, in 2022 we have KZread and lots of great folks like yourself sharing that knowledge. Most charts or sites I see with size conversions tend to list down to a size 14 but my needles go to an 18? Even the size swatches don't have a hole for my last pair, ha. I had bought some bamboo DPNs at the same time that also go incredibly tiny but frankly, I don't feel comfortable using them because they feel so flimsy at such a small diameter that I feel like I'm knitting with skewers or toothpicks and like they'll break on me. The awesome, cheap, tiny circulars came from a company or brand called Xinxingbuxiugang. I don't know, I'm just blown away by these things! That ChiaoGoo set, because they go down to smaller sizes, seems like it would be the one to get, but the price is what keeps stopping me. Good, quality needles in the tiny sizes are so freaking hard to find here in the US - even at the specialty craft stores, most only seem to go down to a 2 mm and the mainstream ones don't have anything below a US size 4. Don't get me wrong, I love knitting with a nice, bulky yarn but there's something about knitting a project with such tiny stitches that really appeals to me. Anyhow, thank you again for the response! I love your videos, I probably watch at least 1 a day when I'm trying a new cast on or looking for new techniques 🤗 I'd love to see one like this about all the different kinds of tiny needles you're able to find and/or use! There's plenty of lace knitters and lace techniques online but not a lot about the needles themselves and since they seem to be so hard to find, especially in those teeny tiny sizes, I'm guessing most of us are using whatever brand we COULD find that's producing those sizes.

Thank you for such an informative review. It was really interesting! I do not have much insight to offer on the topic of needles because we only have KnitPro needles where I live. As I understand it's a different name for Knitter's pride. I have a pair of KnitPro Nova Metal needles, they are nickel coated brass. Love the removable cables, very useful. As for the needles themselves, I cannot say that they are much different from normal circular needles. They are very smooth, which is nice, but my regular fixed circular needles are just as smooth and they are like 10 times cheaper. Also the tips of KnitPro are a bit less rounded than on the regular needles. For me, the best thing about them is the ability to add longer cables.

Hi Norman , I have watched this a couple of times and trying to figure out the best match for me. My dilemma is that I love addi needles and use them exclusively. I only started knitting this year. I mostly use 2.75 to 4mm and the addi set doesn’t go that low. I like to make knitted toys and will soon start doing socks (I can use dpn needles but prefer magic loop) After your video I thought I’d try the chai goo or hiyahiya since I can go smaller with this set. I’m trying to decide two things. If I get the chai goo will I struggle too much with the cord when doing the magic loop. Should I just get the addi set and accept that I can’t get those smaller needles? Your opinion would be appreciated, thank you 💕

  • @NimbleNeedles

Well, i can only say that I do knit a lot of toys/tiny home decor. I I exclusively do that on the Karbonz needles by knitter's pride (i have a review here on my channel as well). I do however, use the fixed circulars and dpns. not the interchangeables. But other than that it's impossible to say. But if you love the addi needles, my guess would be that you won't like either HiyaHiya or ChiaoGoo as the needles are not as slick. I mean..you can still get the addi set and then buy two or three fixed circulars for those smaller projects. I mean...you will probably have to buy some adaptors extra cables when you go for ChiaoGoo as well. But those are just some thoughts.

love hiya hiya- Have the 5" long with sharp tips full set & the shorter regular tips. I love that you can join cables to get any length. I love the bead stoppers. I can use the cables with the bead stopper for holding stiches - they don't seem to pull the stiches apart so that I have large gaps when I pick them up under arms. I've used knit picks/knitters pride but prefer the hiya hiya. Very portable with the soft case - so easy to take the entire case along for a trip. Also the ability to add extensions is great. With one set & some additional pieces I can do any combination of straight or circular needles. I also spin yarn so I have to be able to adjust needles to get gauge. I like to keep to one brand and have sets of everything to keep guage consistent when I need to change to double points, circular, straight etc. I also have full sets of small circulars to do sleeve cuffs and smaller than 16" cable lengths. Great info. in video for those who don't have full sets yet!

Here in Germany, you find their needles and tools in about every crafts store. But I do believe that addi has the better needles.
