The fact that Messi had a goal contribution almost every 45 minutes tells you enough that may have been the greatest individual season of all time. Especially in the contemporary era. Imagine being almost guaranteed two goals a game as long as Messi was playing. Whether if it came from Messi or Messi ended up assisting the goal.

Ronaldo actually reached those heights and even eclipsed them: Messi scored in La Liga 50 goals in 37 matches. Ronaldo scored in La Liga 48 goals in 35 matches. Messi scored in UCL 14 goals in 11 matches. Ronaldo scored in UCL 17 goals in 11 matches. Ronaldo also scored in UCL 16 goals and 15 goals in different seasons. Ronaldo in 2016-17 season scored in UCL 12 goals, while scoring 10 goals in the KO stages (most ever) and he did it without pens.

I bet he could have hit near 60 if he had played all the games. And if Guardiola had stayed in that year I think they would have had a good chance of beating Bayern and getting 100+ points in La Liga with more than 120 goals. And it would have been recognized as the best year for Messi himself, even better than 2015

Imagine scoring two goals against one team.. And scoring 3 goals the next match... Scoring 4 goals a few more matches later.. then scoring 5 goals in the next match... That consistency is insane.. Breaking a team all time goal scoring record.. and setting an all time record of being the only player to score 91 goals in a year

Cristiano was back tracking on defense this exact same year Messi scoring 91. So, technically Cristiano was dropping deeper.

Not only the goals but almost all of his performances were stellar, and all of them by playing on his own. Probably Håland or some other guy will match it but by scoring easy goals provided by the team.

Credit to Barca though; Messi had a whole team of guys like him with big football brains, as shown by Spain's success in those years. Until about 2017 or 18, Messi NEVER had to play on his own, no more than CR7 did. They were surrounded by world class passers and playmakers for most of their careers. Messi had Iniesta, Xavi and Sergio. CR7 had Benz, Kroos and Modric.

Messi being the Greatest is common sense.
