The Best Hitman Map, That No One Seems To Play?
Hitman 3 / World of Assassination's Ambrose Island was released in the middle of 2022, however it appears much to IO Interactive's dismay the map is rather unpopular. Let's dive into Ambrose Island and find out why.

I think the biggest issue people have with Ambrose Island is the visibility. The map is dark, VERY dark, and it leads to sometimes missing obvious things that are concealed by the darkness. I personally find it frustrating to run around dark maps, since I am bound to miss stuff and often just stay in instinct vision for a better visibility.

I think it definitely is the lack of mission stories, when I first played the game and was bad at it that made me not like the map, when my dad played the game the first time he had no idea how to play without mission stories, when I got good at the game I loved Ambrose island and I then taught my dad how to play the game better and now he also loves Ambrose island

I fell in love with Ambrose Island the very moment I began playing it the first time. Superficially, it's beautiful, despite the recycled assets -- the color palette and nighttime setting provide a great mood for assassination, the glow of the torches lights up the jungle impressively, and there's so much detail in every area you can explore. Further, the terrain is so varied, from seaside areas, to the pirate camp, to the militia cave/ruins, to the village itself, the jungle, and everything in between. Also, there is so much to do in Ambrose Island: so many possibilities for infiltration, tons of potential attack vectors, assassination methods, "side quests" & secrets for additional achievements, all kinds of NPCs/interactions/disguises, etc. This is a fantastic map IMO -- you can enter this map empty-handed and still have so many opportunities available to confront and eliminate your targets. Much appreciation for the detailed analysis you provide in this video, WildGold. Hail the Emetic Gas Grenade!

My biggest issue with Amberose Island is variety. Everything feels samey on the map, whether I am outside, inside or at the coast. My approach never changes, while on maps like Miami, Mumbai or Berlin my approach changes based on location or even which level I am on. I hope this makes some sense.

Right after your video, I decided to jump into Ambrose's challenges. The first time I played the map at its release, I wasn't very enthusiast about the map but my journey on this map completely changed my mind. I found out challenges on this map, whether it's assassination, discover or exploits are very fun and none of them are repetitive or boring. Moreover, as you like (love) so much to talk about "freedom of approach", I have to say that Ambrose Island is a real contender on this point. When you take enough time to see the opportunities around you to climb a wall in the ruins, a window in the village, the many ways to go through Akka's military base.. all of it together makes me feel like a real hitman. And to be fair, that's unique. In many maps you feel like there is only one path to follow when it comes to SASO but not on Ambrose Island, you have so many possibilities and specially for the control unit. I want to talk about the control unit. First, I felt like the control unit was a pain is the ass but then I discovered that once again, you've got so many opportunities to take it down that it doesn't end like Whittleton Creek clues or the Virus on Sapienza, boring. Nevertheless, the map isn't perfect. There is not that "wooooow" effect when you first play it and I never really had that feeling. The map is pretty but she lacks of something. What ? I don't really know. If you ask me however, today, I would totally rank up Ambrose Island on my maps ranking and I would probably put it on the higher tier of the list. I definitely assume that being comfortable with the map helps a lot when you decide to play on, on freelancer. Thanks for reading, whoever reads me 💀

If others are like me, the main reason Ambrose Island doesn’t get mentioned in "fave map" discussions is because relatovely few people have played it. I played TONS of Hitman, but then set it aside and didn’t play for a year or two. Recently, I decided to play and found that I had a new map to experience. I played it quite a lot, and really like it. I now save it til last when doing a freelancer campaign as I'm now incredibly familiar with the map and all it's little quirks, safe routes, target patterns etc.

I really loved the amount of detail you put into this video: the top-down enlighted map of the island and its traspassing zones aka the 2 fortresses pirate den and mercenary ruins/caves are helping new players to plan routes - i am a veteran and i already knew these ways and there pro's and cons :) from story related perspective it is a very GREAT map!!! The easiest map maybe to get a silent assassin sniper rating (you just need to use body piercing sniper, shoot the button on the tower to call the meeting, get your first route in non-trespassing are to climb from ocean side up to the small ruin where you get the u-boat keys (i guess i took out the patrol and the stationary guard, but when the meeting takes place Aka sends them away - so you got a window not to get the bodys spottet) then you position yourself on the hill looking at your two targets facing each other for the 1 bullet-2-people-collateral snipe kill and run down to the u-boat to exit... thats maybe 4-5 minutes work! BUT here is my point why i don't tend to play this map: i play Freelancer a LOT and know almost all possible targets - to get all objectives i recommend avoid "hide target bodys", "no bodys found", "suit only" because in progress in the campaign the number of targets increase from 1 up to 4 and YOU named it - it's the LACK of CONTAINERS to hide... and if you are spottet even if you dont play Silent-Assassin-Style in Freelancer this time you visit Ambrose Island - you can be in trouble... if this area is alerted it can be a nightmare because civilian NPCs become ORANGE and panic and "infect" other NPCs and guards as well and if you have the objective "use only one disguise" you are basically screwed... hope you do your evil doings getting spottet in your suit... so NOW it's time for a change :) i don't like Mumbai either... or Bangkok... or obviously Colorado but who likes Colorado as Freelancer?!? Only for picking up weapons for your shelves back in Safehouse ^^ but when it comes to Ambrose i do understand your "love" for it - it's great but maybe for story only. Ciao the Fox

I don't have a problem w/ Ambrose Island, but it kind of feels like an afterthought. Sandwiching it storywise between Whittleton Creek and Isle of Sgail is awkward. You could have made this the lead into what happens in Freelancer, with the Syndicates, which would have added an element of excitement to the mission.

One of my big reasons for not playing this map was the performance. My pc is basic, runs other maps with 60 FPS on 1280*720 and minimum graphics, but this one regularly went down to below 30 in the jungle areas. They did make it look amazing, unfortunately I struggled to play it properly, I even preferred skipping it in Freelancer, unless I did a more basic run on it.

My issue with the the map has nothing to do with the map. This might sound stupid but I had played hitman a ton so when this map came out I forced my self to not try to hard for an hour to experience it normally. But once the hour was up I did SaSo In 3 minutes and then completed all the challenges in like another hour. So I don't know if this map has a lot less content or I was just more efficient than when I played the other maps.

I honestly wasn't that impressed with Ambrose Island. So was I with Mumbai. For some reason, I just prefer day maps, over night or dusk. I just tried out the time of day mod today, and it was a game changer. EVERY single map in the game could turn into day, so now lighting didn't matter. I loved them all, except romania with the train mission, the moving bright white snow in day light just didn't look good. And due to that mod, I actually had an even better time with Ambrose Island! I thought it was fun before, but now that is was lighted, it was like a free haven island!

Reading the recent reviews on Xbox show others have this problem, but I haven't seen any discussion online. Any ideas what happened?

One HUGE issue with Ambrose Island is the fact that there are no escalations or any additional content. For me once I beat a level I play all the escalations. This lets me learn everything about the map which allows me to enjoy it better as I feel like a true hitman. But without escalations? I have no reason to play the map again after the first few. Honestly, I so want some 'bonus missions' on some of the Hitman 3 maps. Stuff similar to what Hitman 1 had with missions like A House Built on Sand, The Icon, and Landslide. Missions where they alter the maps in some small or large way and often taking place during a different time of day from the main mission. Though some of Hitman 3's Escalation Contracts do make some drastic changes to the core maps and stand out as a result but I generally stay away from because I generally do not like playing Escalation Contracts unless they have something I really want. I also dislike the 'Special Assignment' missions in Hitman 2. They generally don't feel different enough from the main missions to feel at all interesting to do for repeat playthroughs.

Mendoza feels like a hybrid between Vintage year and Requiem, Berlin is similair to Codename 47 Rotterdam missions, Chongqing is similair to Hitman contracts missions, Dubai has some inspiration from house of cards etc. Many of these levels have been influenced by older games.

There is a reason why the map is what it is, and it comes down to space on a DVD that can fit on an Xbox/PS4, as for Hitman 3, IOI was stretching the game by reusing as much assets as possible to stay under 25 GBs while also have missions from 1 and 2 included in the 3rd game. If you know about this fact, you understand why you see the same face of guards in Paris, Isle of Sgail and on Ambrose island, with same voice actors, it's because they ran out of space for the consoles. For PC, this would not have been a problem as most people played a digital release on Steam or Epic, so they could have made it more beefy and PC players would still be able to play it. In Hitman 1, the only extra missions we received was the bonus missions set in the same maps as the original campaign, plus the patient zero DLC, a fairly easy implementation. In H2, the extra missions we got were Haven island and New York (plus the water bottle campaign), and those missions at least looked unique enough to be considered not totally re-used assets. And then comes H3 with a linear final mission on a train, and Ambrose re-used assets map that wasn't really up to standard like the other maps, and the only DLC they released was 7 deadly sins and the free Freelancer update with deluxe bling items. For me personally, I didn't like the jungle maps in the first original Hitman 47, I didn't like Santa Fortuna or Ambrose island for the same reason. 47 is a well dressed assassin that can blend in in urban environments, he looks like any other office paper pusher or limousine driver. Almost every NPC in Ambrose island is a person of color (except for the mercenaries), he doesn't blend in but rather stick out like sour thumb. The theme of the island is that it's a haven for pirates, but pirates are brutal in real life and if they sniff a white bald assassin walking around on their turf they would man hunt through the jungle to find him. The problem with Ambrose island was the re-use of assets limitation of the file size of the discs. It didn't feel like patient zero, or the water bottle extra missions or haven or new york, it just felt like: thank you for playing our game, here is a rushed shitty map with nothing new and nothing interesting. As you said, there are no mission stories like the other maps in the trilogy, so it is a sandbox do what you want-type of mission, and the mastery wasn't much to celebrate since they nerfed the molotov that people were misusing in speedruns. When I play freelancer I use the map remover mod and gladly turn off: Santa Fortuna, Isle of Sgail, Mumbai, Ambrose and Colorado. The first one is boring and repetitive in the fortress part, Ark society is unoptimized and NPCs will lag when walking even when it's not a showdown mission, Mumbai has NPCs everywhere that call the police as soon as they see you through a crack, Colorado is a shitshow for Freelancer and generally hated by the community and Ambrose is not fun enough to validate it as a standard map in the rotation. Seeing as the Hitman trilogy is a homage to the earlier games, they could have picked Russia, Malaysia, Austria, Chile, Hungary or a completely new country, even USA would have been fine as a majority of missions in Blood Money was set in the states, plus the Absolution game. Your video explained a lot about the different opportunities and paths that are somewhat easy on the island, but unironically it was things I already knew from my very short and few playthroughs of the map. I will not play it, even to unlock the mastery levels, it's just a boring map and it shows.

Ambrose Island is the reason I love playing hitman now. I played through the whole game, and while it was fun, it wasn’t enjoyable enough for me to replay all the maps over and over again. I’m not sure what it was about ambrose island, but I loved playing it. It was the first map where I reached max mastery, after that I started playing all the maps over and over realizing how enjoyable the game actually is.

Personally, I always prefer larger maps with much larger enemy bases but many more styles of approach. It really lets me be creative. I never really found this in Ambrose Island. To be fair though, I'm only level 730 and have not got 100% completion on ANY maps yet so I don't know if I can talk. Maybe my view will change as I play more but Hitman WOA came off gamepass on Xbox! 😢

I completed Ambrose Island to level 30 when it came out. And honestly, it was pretty good. A little dark, but the more I tinkered around with it I learned to exploit the map more and complete the mission in different ways. I think the lack of formal mission stories gave me more incentive to think outside the box, google how to tinker with the different achievements. Plus the vibes give me a mix of Mumbai with Haven and made darker. I say 8/10. Not perfect, but enjoyable.

Ambrose is a goated map, I think the lack of Mission Stories does bring it down a bit in my opinion tho but considering it was a free map it was definitely worth grinding out for the 100% completion

Ambrose took the worst parts of all the maps and combined it. Trash tier jungle? Yes. Atrocious buildings from Mumbai? For sure. Shit ton of guards in the same place that makes every mistake a kill everyone challenge like Colorado? We have that.

Or maybe its just because the entire map boils down to 2 disguises and there's no interworking systems on the village part at all so you just have 2 maps that are far from each other? Its marakesh without all the signs, chandeliers, payphones for electric kills, oil leak vehicles and food vendors to poison food with.
