The Best Hike in Phoenix - Camelback Mountain - Echo AND Cholla Trails

The Best Hike in Phoenix - Camelback Mountain - Echo AND Cholla Trails
If you're into wilderness experiences, you won't enjoy hikes that are in town. But if you like to hike and live in Phoenix, there are some iconic in town hikes you shouldn't miss. No, you won't be alone on the trail, but you still get a good challenge, views and a workout. And the best hike in Phoenix is Camelback Mountain.
I've hiked Camelback Mountain dozens and dozens of times over the years. But only from the Echo Canyon side. The Cholla Trail isn't as popular and it's been closed for several years. I tried once, but it was closed then too. So I decided that this time I'd just hike the whole thing. So I parked along Invergordon Road and walked from the Cholla Trailhead to the Echo Canyon Trailhead, then walked over the mountain back to my car. Echo Canyon Trail is notorious for steep sections with rails to help you climb or boulders to scramble over. Lots of boulders. It's a challenge and a lot of fun. There's even a 'secret' cave along the way that I didn't know about for years.

I used to hike this with my dad when I was a little kid in the 1960s. Things sure have changed. Paradise Valley was undeveloped desert back then. And you didn't see very many people hiking up there. I miss dad, he took me on so many great adventures. Dad was a surveyor for Arizona Public Service, and did side jobs on the weekends. He surveyed the lots for Paradise Valley Country Club, and surveyed the first power down into Phantom Ranch in the Grand Canyon and the first power into Crown King. Thanks for the video.

Lived here for 2 years hiking all the East (superstition), North (the lake trails), and South (mountain preserve)... Never heard of this one. I need to do more of the city hikes. They look quite fun. And thanks for that wave cave video btw. Met my significant other on that hike. Without it, I would have been lost (in more ways than one haha).

I agree with that 100%. I was actually complaining about the crowds once and my friend reminded me that where he lives he would have to drive 8~9 hours just to get to something like Camelback mountain. I love living here and having so many options so close.

Maybe consider Piestawa. It has a more defined trail and isn't as much elevation gain. Black Mountain is another mellower one. Or you can even go for North Mountain which is easier still. Plenty of options in the City, but this is probably the toughest 'in town' hike in Phoenix.

When I was really fit (and had a looser work schedule) I used to hike Camelback 3-4 times a week, and at least one of those times would be a yo-yo, up to the summit and down to the other trailhead, then reverse course back over the summit a second time. Its a great workout and the rock formations and trail layout (with scrambling sections) are actually pretty sweet for an in-town hike. My all-around favorite in town would be hidden valley up on South Mountain, it feels more remote from the city and some of the features like the tunnel and fat man's pass are real highlights. But camelback is pretty sweet too

Camel Back Mountain. Oh gosh! Growing up in Scottsdale how many times have I looked up and seen that profile against the sky--and the Praying Monk, as we called the rock formation on its "neck" (?). I don't think I knew there was a trail up there. Or maybe there wasn't back then, it was over 40 years ago (eek!). Enjoying your urban hikes and the visits to memory lane. Thanks!

The fences are to keep people from falling off the trail, I believe. It's a sheer drop off and an in-town hike. So tons of people in all different ranges of abilities hike it. Definitely not the type of thing I would expect to see outside of town though.
