    If they were gonna do a Joker movie type of thing yeah. Really this would worked better as a miniseries. Harley's movie was meant to be action-packed, not be Joker heavy, and promote a team to a mainstream audience. They got 2 out of 3.

  • @alicat7633

    @alicat7633

    4 жыл бұрын

    Rocky Hankin the movie may have been good but the idea is horrible and a bad representation of Joker. The character of joker is not supposed to be a tragic figure. He’s supposed to be embodiment of chaos. He’s not supposed to be evil because he has a illness. That’s very harmful to mentally ill people. His character is supposed to be so evil that people have a hard time believing someone that evil can be sane. His cruelty is what causes him to be insane. He Isn’t supposed to be evil because of a tragic past. That completely disregards everything about his character. He is manipulative, cruel, unreliable, murderous, evil, and abusive. He has no regard for human life. That movie is a take on him but it is not what the comic book version of him or literally any other version of him stands for. He manipulated Harley into thinking that he was misunderstood and then became her villain origin story by causing her to go insane. She is the tragic villain that was a hood person gone bad. She eventually redeemed herself a little bit and becomes somewhat of a mix between anti-villain and anti-hero. The thing about the joker that is very distinct about him that keeps him with the other terrible villains is that he doesn’t care about anyone else. Almost all the other villains do. Victor Fries became a villain to save his wife. Harley and Ivy will stop their escape from a crime spree to help an abused child. Joker would abuse a child. He has no morals. He cares for no one. The Joker movie is separate from discussions about the joker character because the joker is who is betrayed to be in the movie.

Harley and Ivy will help an abused child, but right before that throw someone into a vat of acid and watch them disintegrate for the evulz. If we're talking about taking this all 100% seriously, then they all deserve death; not compassion.

    Don't forget the explosion that first knock her off of her feet when she met the Joker. Shell Shock can cause brain damage. I has also been recorded that severe blunt force trauma to parts of the head can lead to impulse control loss. Along with self " medicating " and drinking can lead to wild mood swings. I have seen people lose it over alcohol withdraw along with people coming down from their last " fix, " more than a few times. In real life people like the Joke would have ended up in super-max out in the middle of nowhere within their first or second years of mass murder bank robbery. . Or the city's Mob would have wack him.

    This might just be my opinion but I do think Joker in some way deep in his mind, at least in this universe, actually developed feelings for Harley. And yes I know at the end of the book it's revealed that he used her research to lie to her in their sessions but remember when he saved Harley? He was free, he was good, he could've walked out without looking back but he didn't. There wasn't a real reason for him to do that. My theory's that Joker loves her because she's the one person he got close with that genuinely cared about him. Not just to get him to crack so she could write a book on him like other therapists have done. She didn't just listen to him and pretend to be involved, she truly heard him and believed in some of his ideals. And they spent a lot of time together in and out of Arkham which means he saved her twice, because he felt some type of connection to. And when she killed for him and proved how far she was willing to go for him I think that was the real " true love" moment for them. I haven't read all of the Harleen books so this theory could be wrong and I don't like the abusive relationship angle so I hope if there was another book they didn't make him abusive to her because I think this story could make them a loving couple unlike versions before them.

    I really loved the tone of this book, from being dark but not edgy. Rather taking a more grounded yet deeper police/dateline drama approach and how it portrays believable take on the story without romanticizing it. Even retconning the fact Harley dated her professor only for it to give her a bad reputation, rather than her failing her class only to get him to "pass" her, also fits better with the integrity of her own intelligence as a psychiatric specialist yet hinting her own weakness for people she trusts within her field being her vulnerability and it also geniusly foreshadows her relationship with the Joker instead of it being a throwaway part of her old story. It all just captures that real tragic irony in it, that it should be. That real abuse Joker has with people he thinks are no different than he is. How he can create villains through their own vices. Nothing over the top but just him outsmarting and exploiting people who think they know him. It would perfectly work as a "Joker" styled origin for Harley. This story also establishes Harley as being originally a legitimately good person who was tricked into the affair she had sympathetically. The dialogue isn't the greatest at times but the structure of the plot and the storytelling of it, is very good and rare in comics. Its what I felt was missing from Punchline's origin. The character development.

    I have recently been reading this story and I have been loving this deep dive into a believable (*yes I said believable*) take on her origin and what her life was like before the Joker with some genius ideas like including the concept of Joker haunting her mind, and after building more of a connection with him sees him not as a boogeyman but later as her soulmate. Though the Batman Animated Series and Harley Quinn tv delved into her interactions with the Joker (hell even Suicide Squad did), I never truly felt her fear/sympathy/lust for him. Though as much as I love seeing all the wacky, goofy, and sometimes gruesome shenanigans she gets her self into after her emancipation/break-up from her "pudd'n", I always wanted to know more about not who Harley Quinn was but who was Harleen Quinzel. I know most people may prefer her in a different way or have her as the status quo of being Joker's girlfriend/sidekick (*before Punchline*)... but truly that's the beauty of her character, of her entire existence. As a character created in the early '90s she hasn't been around for that long in the Batman lure, so her story is more open to new opinions. That's why this story fascinates me so much and that I know I may be at the short end of the stick here, so don't complain, but... I thought her character in Suicide Squad (2016) and Birds of Prey were bold and interesting choices. So if you see her as a sidekick, as the Joker's girlfriend, a badass, an independent woman, a leader, a criminal-mastermind, as a herald for Darkseid (*no really that actually happened, Google it*), or even as the dominant alpha in her relationship with Joker, like in Batman Telltale: Enemy Within (2017), which was very new and fascinating... you're still going to love her, because no matter who you are that interpretation of Harley Quinn is the one you'll favour, and the reason why we love Harley Quinn. Though we may never see a live-action Harleen movie I can tell you that having to dive into the pain, the fear, the sorrow, the happiness, the mear lifestyle of all the Batman rouges such as Harley Quinn... is one of the reasons why I love the Batman mythos so bloody much!!!

    Tbh, I'd prefer if they made dark movies for dc characters, instead of trying to destroy the dceu even further. Something like a lineup of DC Dark movies that are either loosely connected or not connected to each other. Basically kinda continuing the dark tone of Joker 2019

    Film Noir, " It is a dark gritty city on the coast, always hammer by tidal fog and rain." Weather is nasty, crime is brutal, the deep dish pizza feels like a piece of Heaven within your hand when you eat. As a rule, the grittier darker the Batman is, the brighter Superman must shine. In the 1980's reboot after " Crisis." They made Johnathan Kent a war veteran that seen combat. As one story went in a comic, .. Some guy, " Hey Kent, yeah you big corn feed Ox ! What was the worst gun shoot out you ever heard of before coming to the Big City ?" Clark Kent, " My local church dean got both of his legs tore off by a machine gun emplacement and my pa took a bullet in his hip pulling him to safety. Due to the shell shock from the mortal rounds, half the vets have heart problems." Everyone in the next few comic panels just looked shocked and in awe at Kent. Jimmy, " Is that why you go and visit vets and collect their stories Mr.Kent ?" ( It was one of those comic issues that was posted in the month to remind us of Veterans' Day.) 2.) Don't forget, Lois Lane cut her teeth by going after corrupt politicians, big business men, and crime bosses. Then Superman shown up. Instead of " Vicki Vale " you have Lois Lane going after Bruce Wayne and Gotham City's the " Bat." They even play that out as a flash back in one of the Batman animated tv series. Bruce, " Let me get this strait, first you fell for me. But left cause you couldn't handle my night life. Then you hook up with Lex Luthor, drop him over a crush on a space alien in blue tights. Final ended your sights on a corn feed ox of a farm boy, only to find out he was the space alien. After how many years working together ?" Lois, " Shut up Smallville, and put some clothes on." Clark, " I wasn't going to say anything Lois .. honest, hi Bruce." 3.) If they did a movie about two competing female news reporters going after an Urban Myth and covering a Mob Family War. With Batman as more of a background figure. With nearly everything from Lois & Vicki point of view. Cast,.. Vicki Vale: side kicks, .. unknown. Lois Lane: ( military brat, instead of after doing basic training then going into " intelligence " she became a reporter/ father not happy about that. Many people think she is a government military trained spy.) side kick, .. Jimmy Olsen " as dirty of a street fighter anyone has seen. Comes off as a shy sweet kid. Doesn't mind being the office coffee boy. Just likes putting smiles on peoples faces. Play a double game of being a minor Mob snitch." As a news paper photographer to basic stalk people for time location hits. Jimmy has a crush on Lois. B listed characters Clark Kent: cub reporter who Lois hasn't worked with yet and only met about two months ago. Friends with Jimmy. Lois want Jimmy away from Kent so he can't steal " HER " story ! So Vicki Vale to flirt date Kent to get at Lois. Bruce Wayne: high class socialite, seems to have too many lunches and rubbing elbows with gangsters and other shady business men. In truth most of Gotham is shady as a place can get. Bruce for some reason book a date with Lois, Vicki, and some other woman " Cat " at the same time, and another woman with an accent calling Bruce " Beloved " all the time drops in. Half way through lunch Lex Luthor shows up. Polite words are said with a lot of under tone, and Lois leaves with Lex. Rival mob family does a hit on Lex & Lois. Lois shows she knows how to use a riffle. Lex Luthor: In Gotham on business regarding weapon government contract with Wayne Enterprises , first shown at dinner party, then lunch date. Side kicks Mercy, Hope & Grace. Driver, body guards, bag/ pillow woman. Cameo, .. John Henry Iron: R&D armor and weapon designer, " later known as Steel." Samuel Lane: Lois father, .. dinner party dealing with government contracts. Doesn't like the flying alien. Wear tights in public like that makes him a circus freak, it is shameful. Lois picks on her father about foot ball. And he prideful reply that foot ball is a man's sport. Lois & Samuel is known to get into bitter public verbal abuse fights over politics and everything else. " It is all an act ." Lois can take care of her self, she has proven that. But he stills has body guards follow her. 4.) It is a movie where everyone is watching everyone else. It is a " Spy " movie within an American city. a.) quick cut scene, it shows Bruce is putting on make up and street clothes. Later find Bruce/ Batman on a public street and see if you can find the actor in disguise. b.) Bird eye views come from roof tops or windows end in showing a person with a camera or riffle scope. Or Clark sitting on a roof eating a snack and watching the other characters. c.) Vicki Vale, Lois Lane & Jimmy Olsen deals with the high class investigations rubbing on the street level stuff. Clark Kent is all street level and doing charity work and ease dropping. Clark night stealth is a black suite, if real needed he flies his family colors as Superman. Other wise you only get to see Superman for barely 3 minutes on film. The main story is Vicki Vale & Lois Lane. d.) As a running gag, from time to time someone always stops in the middle of what they are saying, then says, " It Feels like Some One is watching us ." And it is Clark, looking a bit amused. Maybe also the Flash. Hope you enjoy this read, have a nice day. Also, the D&D3e RPG store I went to back before 2010 ran this as a campaign setting for over half a year.

    If they tried to just focus on doing good adaptions and not trying to mold themselves into Marvel, or the expectations people have for all Superhero movies to be the Avengers/Guardians of the Galaxy, we could get good stuff like how Joker broke away from that or the Dark Knight years before. Trying to compete directly with Marvel's type of movies just don't work for origin stories, and they Marvel movies are generally overrated anyway, at least by casual fans. The Marvel movies are mostly known for its modern camp and sarcastic wit. Not their actual plot or characters, or cinematography.

    This really was a fantastic comic. I read it when I started watching the Harley Quinn animated series, and although they show very different versions of the character, I still love them both. Also, at the same time, I was in the midst of writing a custom origin story for her via the medium of fanfiction, but after reading this, I realized that nothing I wrote would be able to exceed it. As far as I'm concerned, this is *the* definitive Harley Quinn origin.

    I loved Harleen SO MUCH. Honestly, I hadn’t fallen so deeply in love with a new comic in a long long time, and I certainly didn’t expect it would happen with a story about Harley Quinn - I thought this was just DC’s way to try and capitalise on the BoP movie and I was salty, because I grew up loving the character and don’t particularly enjoy the DCEU take on her. I’m so glad I was wrong.

    In my mind, the relationship between her and Ivy is also toxic since Ivy can be seen as an enabler. While not as bad as the Joker, she is still a criminal encouraging Harley to embrace her psychotic tendencies. Even if she says she loves her, it's not love for Harleen, the proactive psychologist seeking to help the mentally ill in need of a guiding hand to become a better person. It's love for Harley, the slutty clown girl with a broken moral compass ready to wreak comedic havoc at the expense of others whenever she feels like it. I hope we get a story where Harley actually wants to fix the mental damage Joker inflicted on her and gains support from heroes or even villains that don't glorify or make light of her insanity.

    Jeshua Restituyo I know, that’s why it’s disappointing to see comics like this be like “haha what if we completely reduced her to the Joker’s abused girlfriend again” in 2020 and to see content creators I like peddle this as some masterpiece when it’s really just edgy grimdark fanfiction That somehow got the greenlight to be made into an official comic book. Even the book in this series that I was told was Harlivy themed was 90% Harley gushing about her relationship with the Joker, Poison Ivy just shows up at the end to break her out of jail. But we don’t even get to see them interact.

I would love to see you talk about her older pre new 52 stuff. Her original solo comic series from the 2000's doesn't get much attention outside the art.
