I think the best part about kids gear is that they grow out of it or it doesn't work for them and its super easy to find gently used. thanks for making this video.

Kids are amazing, my son already loves the outdoors and animals, I can't wait to take him backpacking with me when he gets a bit older. You're a good Dad, being able to teach the next generation respect and love for our natural resources is an honor. 🙌

I have also found amazing brands thrifting such as Columbia/ North Face/ Patagonia/ REI for myself and my kids. It’s definitely work a look before buying new.

We have a Columbia outlet near us and it’s awesome for finding good deals!

Headlamps are a good investment for little ones, I bought different colors for my 3…this year they are all getting new, they are all adults now. Yep, their headlamps lasted years. They were good about taking care of them over the years, including taking batteries out during long term storage.

I think I came across your videos a while back on winter camping and warmth tips, good to see some variety here👍🏻

We have a couple of outdoor gear consignment shops in town that are a great place to pick up gently used kids clothing and gear for cheap.

Taking my soon to be 4 year old on her first camping trip for her birthday! She loves backyard tenting so fingers crossed!

Great stuff! I've looked at all those options for the Rugged Mountain Siblings at one point or another! Always trying to get their pack weight down. They both sleep hot so they have the Aegismax bags for 2.5 to 3 season camping. They were warm in them down to the low 40s. I'd love to get them a UGQ though! Rugged Mountain Mister is still sporting his REI Tarn 18 (He's finally grown into it.) and for Rugged Mountain Sister I went to a Osprey small womens backpack. She like the suspension system of the Sirrus! This topic was one I had the most trouble getting answers to when I started backpacking with them so I'm sure this should be super helpful!!

It’s kind of overwhelming to figure it all out, but just starting small and building from there makes all the difference. 👍🏻👊🏻

I have an 11 yo boy who’s a scout. Sleeping bags are hard at that age. He only weighs 70lbs and should only carry 14lbs in his backpack. (And I’ve learned the hard way that there’s a big difference between 14 and 15 lbs for him.) A Down bag seems perfect for reducing bulk and weight, but he’s WAY too hard on his gear at this age to even think about spending that much on a bag. Not so much on trips, but when he gets new stuff he wants to use it around the house constantly. Good for keeping him excited to go on trips. Not so good for the durability of the stuff. On the other hand, a synthetic bag, plus the pack, eat up half the weight he can carry before he packs anything else.

I can definitely understand that. Kids are hard on gear, which is why I tried to focus on buying things out of season and on sale to reduce the cost of a shorter life span.

I’m finding 11-13 is a weird transition age. It used to be I just gave him a few things to carry himself, and I carried the extra stuff. Now, He needs and wants to start doing more for himself, but he also still wants “Mr Fox” on the trip. He’s big enough and strong enough to be really hard on the gear, but the stuff that can stand up to it is too heavy/bulky for him to carry.

It'ss definitely difficult to keep kids/tweens comfortable with a safe pack weight when it's not a family trip and you can't spread the weight around. I've had some luck looking for gear in the clearance or used sections of REI and other outdoor gear stores for more affordable down options.

My kid can do all this with her naked barbie and wearing a pair of knock off crocs with some spare diapers……. What did you think parents did with their kids in the 1970’s before they made all this insanely priced gear for kids. God forbid back in the 1800’s when they had only bed roll and maybe a decent hat. My thought you find a way to adapt and overcome that’s the whole point of camping and hiking. Do you thinks the kids in Mongolia need a 200 dollar down sleeping bag. My kids go and go and will sleep standing up against a rock. It’s all how you raise them and teach them how to get used to things. You think kids crossing the southern border in the desert for 3 days carry down sleeping bags or expensive backpacks? Nope a old school backpack and some water bottle and some sort of jacket. I grew up not even owning a flash light outdoors and my friends who did had a candle flame bright old school flashlight.
