The Best Free Astro Software just got even BETTER
Siril 1.2.0-beta1 was just released. Let's check it out! siril.org
== Notes / Corrections ==
-On Windows only, there is currently a bug with Starnet - see the easy workaround near the top of the release notes: siril.org/download/2023-02-24...
-With the GHS tool, try picking a symmetry point more towards the right side of the histogram bump after initial stretch as lots of interesting stuff is usually over there to bring out. See the GHS tutorial below for more details.
-I misspoke in the small section about PCC at the end. You can still platesolve inside PCC, it's just that now you can also platesolve separately with the new process (or even in a different program), and PCC will pick that up from the metadata in the FITS header

Omg Starnet being built in, ON TOP of creating a separate star layer at the same time, is Christmas to my ears.

Excellent. I like the ease of Siril. Now it is even better. As you mentioned at the end, you didn't perform some steps like Crop, Color Cal, Background Extraction, Remove Green Noise. Perhaps a Siril Workflow cheat sheet for us entry level guys would help, like a one or two pager. Thanks

I think the workflow is the "canonical" one that Nico does in the other tutorial, like this one of the Dying Star "kzread.info/dash/bejne/mKCitMyxnrvJhKw.html" or this one of the Andromeda Galaxy "kzread.info/dash/bejne/k6GWt8-TfLLLg9Y.html". These have helped me a lot!
Great video, Nico. Thanks for going over some of these cool updates to the new Siril beta.
Always love seeing the love for Siril, this will hopefully save me some time trying to explain how I use it. Thanks again!
Thanks for the tutorial, very helpful - as are the tutorials in Siril itself! But following you step by step is just great. The video also shows how good you are at collecting the data, a good camera, a good lens, good tracking and an experienced person behind it just shows immediately! What a beautiful nebula!
I've had Siril for a long time and didn't realize the ease of use this is a game changer for me and post, Thanks Nico for your contributions to astrophotography, You're a pioneer in this field.
Much thanks for your great and detailed report about that excellent Siril tool.👍🏼✨💫
Thanks Nico for this step by step video. It was a game changer for me. I use an uncooled camera (ASI 585mc) but couldn’t believe the final images I was getting after going through your video and following the different techniques. 🙌 I’ve since re-processed previously stacked images and cannot believe how good they’re coming out.
Hats off.Your a great communicator. I think you may of been the first astro content creator that i learnt something from,so its quite impressive that m still learning a couple more years into this "hobby" I hate that word..
Siril is awesome! Thanks for the help in learning how to utilize it better
Plus 1 for the new version of Siril! Awesome.
Great discussion, and big big help for newbies like me to astro image processing.
Hello Nick. Greetings from Toronto. I just subscribed to your channel. Thank you for this video. My processing has always been very poor. With this software, I think I can improve a bit the data I have captured during the pandemic years. All the best and clear skies!
Always love a good Siril Vid. Good work..
Thanx Nico for this info. Without the Video, I would not have known of the Starnet tool for Siril.
Thanks a lot Nico..this is really something to look forward to
Thank you Nico for another great video. Siril is awesome and your videos are top notch.
Very clear and no BS tutorial/demo. Never tried Siril but will certainly do so. I like that the UI has the look and feel of RawTherapee but that may just be me.
Wow - thanks Nick. I watched other videos about the GHS and never could manage to get it to preform the way I knew it could. Following your walk through changed that. I just reprocessed data from M92. I was trying to not blow out the core, and had even tried two stretches and a layer/blend in GIMP (kind of worked) - but working through it while watching helped tremendously. I am now Team GHS. :)

Same. I started with StarTools which was an exercise in frustration. Moved to Siril which I loved but didn't do everything I wanted and settled on PI. But to have a good competing platform is amazing.
This looks very interesting, time to revisit Siril I guess. thanks Nico!!
Nico, thank you so much for doing these open source updates! I really like siril, but like you I would only end up using a couple of features and end up bashing my head against the keyboard tinkering in gimp, or just saying screw it and applying an autostretch. This new GHS model looks killer, and I have a feeling this weekend is gonna disappear in re-edits.
Great tips for how to use GHT. I was playing with the developer version, for awhile but kept going back to v1.06 - your video prompted me to try this new beta, what a difference! First glance two things I checked on - they must have finally recompiled with current Libraw because Siril now supports Olympus/OMDS OM-1 raw files that it never did (YAY!) I'd guess there may be some other newer raw support in there, too. And it looks like they fixed the swap storage problem (at least on MacOS) so it reads the actual free disk space instead of some crazy low number that would cause it to fail processing for lack of space, when there was plenty left. Just keeps getting better!
Sweet Video Nico,Ive Heard A Cpl Others Talk About This Program,I Just May Check It Out,Thank You,Clear Skies,and Beautiful Image🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼
I've been using this software on Linux for a while now, and I can confirm that it works amazingly well! It's great to see updates that make it even better. Thanks for sharing this video! \m/

Great job!Nico I love your tutorial and subscribe. 🤗
Great tutorial! Nico after your ranking of stacking software, I'd like to see you at work with another free software, astap, which if I remember correctly had a rating of 9 (very high). Explained by you I'm sure it will be very easy to understand like everything else! Thanks for what you do.

SIRIL is worth it for the GHS alone! That's incredible!
Very nice, been a while since i update my Siril, it have worked very good for so long(Not stable in the past) so i just left it alone :D Very tempting to update now tho.
Brilliant video tutorial this software has come a long way. I really enjoyed playing around with your data files Made it a joy to use as I knew the data was good and I could get good results. Do you have any Videos that have OSC data? I started out with a canon camera and a few budget lenses inspired by the video you did with Trevor on the Witch head nebula Keep up the great work 👍👍👍
Superb video
Camera's are generally more sensitive to green, the red and blue need to be boosted to get a basic whitebalance, when only the green channel is over exposed/clipped the boost in the red and blue channel produces a magenta-ish color, this isn't always noticeable because the highlights generally get compressed but if you apply an algorithm that boosts color in the highlights then the magenta-ish color also gets boosted. Maybe the siril dev's could implement highlight reconstruction like in darktable, it's open source and very effective in fixing over exposed point light sources.
@darrenwilliams414

do a negative transformation remove green noise then negative transformation that will remove the magenta-ish color
Hey, great video as usual. Still waiting for a video on how to process JWST data with only siril and photoshop. It will be very helpful. And thanks again, I'm learning a lot from your videos.
Thanks!
Thanks to Nico for this excellent tutorial.
the reason for the pink star cores is the color calibration. It turns white into (bright) pink. With conventional stretching this would be no problem, since the star core gets stretch until its burned out again.
I'm loving GHS, Starnet integration and the much-improved deconvolution tool. The only letdown for me is the noise reduction - it just does not work well at all on colour images. (To be fair, the developers acknowledge that in their documentation). If they can solve that and maybe add some masking options in the future, then Siril will have everything I need.
Thanks for everything you do, keep up the awesome work
What they done to Siril is amazing. Sadly I haven't any RAW, but even from JPG I could take so much more data. Now I have to make new images😅😅
U brought me in to use siril as first astro processing software
Thank you, this was really informative. Can you use Siril for wide-angle milky way landscape shots?
Thanks
Thank you! Great demo/tutorial! I wonder how it would work on the Dolphin nebula (SH2-308), which I have a lot of difficulty with in stretching its data.
Nico, sounds like you are REALLY enthusiastic about this update. Playing with it a bit. Of course, switching between Pixinsight and Siril and then using Photoshop can make you crazy……
If you run each binary from the terminal beforehand, then macOS security will ask you if you allow the binary to run, so it is a good practice to first run the binaries from the terminal to then allow them to run on macOS System Settings, and then set the binaries on Siril, so you'll not have any security warning issues.
Concerning the pink stars, for what I come for my researches, it's related to a mismatch between bit-rate of the source image files and the resulting stacked image. For example, in my case, I do astrophoto with a Nikon camera which provides 14 bits raw files, but PixInsight's and Siril's stacked images are 16 or 32 bits, By consequences, we get a saturated 14 bits color translated into a soft non-saturated 16/32 bits, which results into that pink.
@shekibobo
Жыл бұрын
Very interesting. Any way to fix it?
@davidforcier4
Жыл бұрын
@@shekibobo Never really found a real fix, but my processing steps allowed me to get around the issue. I extract the stars in a separated image while still being in linear mode, and I stretch them just over the point where the pink turn white, but they remains under-stretched compared to the seep-sky image, so they remain smalls. This way has also the benefits to avoid star reduction because under-stretched stars are not as large as the full-stretched ones, so no need to reduce them over :)
Finally got starnett to open in siril❤
Thanks Nico for the informative tutorial. I have tried the noise reduction feature but so far I don't seen any changes in the image. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Have you had a chance to test this?
I'm not sure if they changed something in the mean time (final 1.2 version) but you don't have to go to Plate solving first - all is done within Photometric CC.
I would LOVE to see you make a 'quick and dirty' guide to siril for people that have never processed before. I'm new to this (just bought a seestar s50) and I am scared!
You should really be proud of the videos you share and the way you make them. They are a real treasure for completely noobs like me. Any ideas why my stacked photos (taken with my Canon R6) have the RGB not aligned? I've checked your analysis on the stackers, and I've tried in ASTAP and DSS (here I have align RGB selected). Same results. I'm trying to get my first "final' picture and no luck. All horrible 😢

I have seen those red stars also in pixinsight. There it was because the recombination of the different channels was done with files in their lineair state instead of the non lineair state of the subs. Might be related?

I just bought a Canon EOS Rebel T7 because of one of your videos. I really want to get into Astrophotography. Do I need to learn the basics of photography first? I want to get taking pictures as quickly as I can so I can learn about all of the astrophotography tools because this hobby seems like it has a steep learning curve. Any advice for a complete beginner? I watched your video where you talked about just using a camera and a lens and a tripod. So I bought all of those things. I am just wondering what I should focus on next.
Thanks for demonstrating some of the new features in the updated version of Siril, Nico. Looks like some great improvements! So, unlike PixInsight, Siril is unable to read the embedded plate solving data in FITS files, is that right? (If I'm remembering correctly, the only time you have to use Image Solver in PI is when you're NOT using a FITS file. I could be wrong.) So, is there anything in Siril that you would recommend using in place of the processes in PixInsight, i.e., anything that's easier, more intuitive, or performs better? Thanks again for the update!

Hello Nico thank you for the amazing tutorial ☺️. I have a question about the blending mode of the stars and starless layers. You said in the last video you uploaded that it's possible to choose the blending mode thanks to pixelmath (you also showed the formula). But I can't understand in which part of the process should be done. Thank you again for the effort you put in your video❤️
@NebulaPhotos
Жыл бұрын
This new Star Recomposition tool in Siril shown in this video basically replaces the need to do this, but if you still want to use pixelmath to blend: 1. stretch (not a huge stretch, just a little) 2. Use Starnet++ to make a starless version 3. Stretch the starless version more 4. open pixelmath and use the formula to combine the stars and starless version. 5. continue editing with the combined version

Should Siril be deleting these files once processing created the results.fits is created? I assume that at that point, I can delete files. Is this is good assumption or do they have a follow on use in processing?

They can be useful for diagnosing problems, and the calibrated lights can be used for multi night projects. Other than that, there isn’t much reason to keep them and these ‘intermediate files’ can be deleted.

Are you on Windows? There is a bug and this might be the reason - check out the workaround described towards the top here: siril.org/download/2023-02-24-siril-1.2.0-beta1/
I`ve tried to 1.2 version, however I can`t have colors on my pic lol . Only black and white :)

A couple things to try: 1. Make sure you are on the RGB tab at the top 2. Is it giving any kind of message about 'debayer' - in the settings you can look up how it's debayering the files, sometimes you may have to look up the bayer pattern and set that manually. If it helps to send me some screenshots: nicocarver at gmail dot com
The only problem I have with siril is that it requires a lot of space to run and it's something that I cannot handle right now :')

How much space are we talking about here?

@@marcellnagy5771 Once I buy one, I'll be using siril for sure. but for now, I'm using ASTAP. DSS can't process RAF files fast. It takes more than an hour to just register 30 Dark frames.

@@possiblepilotdeviation5791 If I capture 30-60 minutes of lights, it takes nearly 50-60GB. And the processing time is also way longer.

Way longer? Compared to what software? That surprises me because siril is by far the fastest one for me. Also don't use scripts if you have issues with space (it's easier to manage the files without them)
when I enter the command prompts, it says "'chmod' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file".
