The old man was a chief boatswain’s mate in the navy for 23 years, and for much of it he used a large double bladed case folder in carbon steel. I never saw a guy so dedicated to a single knife. He kept the blade, scary sharp, using just a common sharpening stone. Even after he retired, he would faithfully take it out, and put a little oil on a rag and wipe both blades down to lightly coat it, and put it away again. I never saw the need for it, but he told me when out at sea in the salt air, you had better do that with carbon steel to keep it rust free, but for him the trade off was that carbon steel kept a good edge for a long time. His best friend was a rigger at the local shipyard here, and borrowed it once to use for a week or two. And, as fate would have it, he was climbing out of a tug boat, and somehow bumped the knife out of the sheath, and it was lost in the river. The firework show was loud and long when he had to come to the old man with his hat in his hands and tell him the knife was lost. The old man was in total shock, saying he had carried that knife for 15 years under all conditions, and never had a problem. It must have hit the old man hard, because even though this guy was my dads very best friend in the world, it still was almost three months before he started talking to him again. Some might say it was just a small inanimate object, but I guess that when you have a tool that you use almost daily for 15 years, and he told me it saved his life at least twice handling lines on the ship, I guess for him it felt a bit like losing a family member. He got over it, but I imagine his heart hurt just a bit when he thought about it...........

In the Marines from '69 through the '70's the Buck 110 was about universal and you were hard pressed to find an Enlisted Man without one on his belt. (The PX carried only the Buck knives and had great prices.) Pendleton got a New Yorker as their CG and despite there NEVER having been one used in a fight he ordered the the 110's (along with any knife whose blade was more than 3 1/2 inches) be confiscated by the Provost Marshalls. (I had a Buck Ranger Model 112, but to show solidarity with the other Enlisted I quickly purchased a 110, along with the recommendation to my men to slip it in their pockets!) Rarely did anyone search the pockets of Marines. Uncle Henry who had an unconditional replacement guarantee (even when the lock backs were lost) came to our rescue by replacing any of our knives taken many times over. (And more than a few Provost Marshalls when off base got the living jump up beat out of them...) The President (Ford) and Secretary of the Navy wouldn't get involved but the Schrade (Uncle Henry) folks got some Southern Senators involved and Barry Goldwater had precisely one meeting the the Commandant of the Marine Corps and Pendleton's restrictions on knives were history (as was their anti-weapons CG after a year.) Morale went to squat though and re-enlistments went to zero at that time. (Yes the end of the draft had something to do with that as well.) Uncle Henry's became the new normal, with a bunch of Buck 110 loyalists! The Marine fishermen (Matthew 4:19) were big into the red bone handled Frost Bear Claws as the handle held up to water damage better than the wood scales and were so much less expensive than the Buck via mail order. I carried a Lake Folder which was a custom knife purchased from a young Marine who had a new baby to take care of and needed the cash, but my Ka-Bar and later a Morseth (Russel) got the hard use.

@@DonnieBAllDay Our Buck 110's & 112's (along with the Schrade's/Uncle Henry's and Frost's) weren't issue folders, they were just so popular that about every Enlisted Marine carried one in it's leather sheath on their belts. The Marine Corps went through a tough time Late Vietnam era when fraggings became more common and many officer's demanded that our weapons be secured in the armory including privately purchased firearms and knives and none were allowed out at all until a mission or an attack. Accordingly morale went to crap. I was a gun nut and a knife collector way back then (still am!) We are talking about more than 50 years ago! I swear it was just yesterday!!!

I own the Case Hammerhead and just bought a new Case Mako last week. I also own the Case 112, and one of the Old Timers in a smaller size, and aesthetically, the two Case locks are a work of art and beautiful to look at and hold. I bought a Buck 110 and returned it because it was so gritty and filled with black grease/oil. The Uncle Henry-Old Time Schrades and Frosts are not made well, if they aren't made in the U.S. I've seen old Schrade's made in the U.S. and they are so much better made than the China made versions.

During my days in the Navy, I used a KABAR 1189 which I still have and like me--its retired now. This was late 70's when I was deck seaman aboard a Navy destroyer. My 1189 looks like the current 110 knife. It is accompanied by a black leather sheath not nylon. I bought it in the ship's store and Kabar was the brand they stocked. Everyone on deck carried a 1189 or a Buck. A few carried fixed blade knives, mostly the Boatswain mates, but us deck apes carried folders on our belts.

This is old. But, is a great video. To those who, don't know or been told something else. 420hc only has 45% carbon and is not a high carbon steel! That's what company lie about to make it sound better than what it is. High carbon steel is 80% or more! It's a low carbon steel! 440a has 75% carbon to 80%! So, it is actually a high carbon steel! It has a way, higher potential to hold a edge longer than 420hc could ever hold! That's why, old Schrades stainless steel held a longer edge than any modern buck. The Buck company with it's heat treatment can get the most out of that steel. Only if they'd change to 440a then they'd have a even better 110!

While you have some nice blades, I think your reasoning might be flawed in some respects. Yeah the Case knives are pretty, but Me personally, I don't buy a knife for it's beauty lmfao. I prefer durability and functionality over looks. I prefer mushroomed pins over smooth pins because if the glue holding the scales gives out, those scales will not stay in place with smooth pins like they would with mushroomed pins. I have a Warranted Steel Wedge Straight razor made between 1835 and 1845 still has the ORIGINAL BRASS PINS mushroomed over the collars protecting the Buffalo horn scales. But you have some nice blades. 👍

Where did the Case blades prove to not be durable or functional? I have a WWII issued and well used blade with smooth pins and no loosening. I think your reasoning might be flawed in some aspects. But I'll tell you what, while mushroomed pins can loosen, I still think they're a great idea.

  • @richardweilandt3315

I've had scales pop off when the glue failed and the pins did not keep the scales in place. Remember, it's a knife meant for hard use. Temp changes from hot to cold, wet weather, etc.

I have only a few folders . I honestly never really invested in others because I’m so biased towards the Buck 110 . Must of owned 5 times over the past 4 decades ??? One of my biggest regrets in life ( out of so many haha ) , was trading my very first BUCK 110 back in the 80’s . Oh I wonder what that would be worth now !? ( even though from what I know now I would never part with ). But now I’m going to see exactly what folders I actually have . I don’t have a Case . I don’t have a KaBar . But I do have one in particular that I actually do like a lot ( believe it or not - it’s by Rough Rider ). It’s a beast of a folder I tell you ! Great video !! Awesome Awesome Awesome! The “ Master “ did it again 🤠❤️🙏🔪☘️

The best part about the folders is that they're virtually carry anywhere blades. I know that if I'm somewhere that a blade on the belt is frowned upon, I'll always know that what's in my pocket will always keep me from being a victim. Well, that and the fact that I'd smash the guy anyway. Haha

One more thing ..... My dogs always run inside the house when I’m doing a knife video . They literally get out of the way when I’m setting up . It’s not that I’m telling them to go inside - it’s a knee jerk reaction - every single time !! And if the back door just so happens to be shut , Leo ( my youngest and biggest dog ), will start crying for me to open the door . I’m going out on a limb here ... But when they see me go outside with a big Bowie , they want NO parts of it ! It must scare them ( especially My Leo ). Hahaha- They ain’t stupid ! And I don’t blame em !
