    Also Mario Maker. YEARS ago you could use a ROM of SMW called Lunar Magic and make whatever game you wanted. I believe it was around in 2012. Than Nintendo made Mario Maker in 2016 I believe. It's good, but still VERY limited in terms of what a fan could do with the ROM as apposed to Nintendo's ( Incredibly late) official release.

    Honestly, I wholeheartedly believe it's a pride thing Nintendo's got going on. I wouldn't be surprised if they think that fans making better games than what some official products end up being like is something to be ashamed of, and so that shame drives them to stamp out any legitimately good fangame based off of any of their IPs.

    I feel like a few people have mentioned this before, but Pokemon Brick Bronze was pretty impressive for me. It was a completely new region (i think it was called Roria?) and while it didn't have new Pokemon or regional forms and stuff like that, I really loved its story and aesthetic, even for a Roblox game. After PBB's shutdown, the team behind the fangame decided to make ANOTHER fangame under the name of Loomian Legacy, which is still up to this day. It works pretty differently from regular Pokemon, and has its own Pokemo-ah, sorry, Loomians, to call its own. It's still being updated today, to my knowledge, so you can go play it right now-

    I actually feel different about the AM2R shutdown. I love AM2R, it is easily my favourite fan game yet. The fact that it was shut down sucks, however, it conveniently happened just after it was finally completed. To me it has always felt like Nintendo, or rather some employees at Nintendo allowed AM2R to be completed. I had been aware of AM2R for a few years already at that point, so it seemed unlikely to me that no-one at Nintendo knew of it prior to its completion. I can't say whether Metroid: Samus Returns creation had anything to do with the existence of AM2R. But it does seem likely to me that Nintendo "had to" take AM2R down because of their own remake. At the end of the day I'm really glad we got both. It is interesting to see two different approaches to remaking the same game. I personally found AM2R more fun to play, but I am so glad that Metroid: Samus Returns led to the eventual release of Metroid Dread.

    Nintendo has had a god complex ever since they saved the video game industry back in the mid 1980s. They are paranoid over fans outdoing them, oblivious to the fact that their fandom actually still cares about their game franchises. Honestly, we should tell Nintendo that it’s not the end of the world if their fans make their own Mario games and that they are still remembered no matter what. Only then will Nintendo stop living in their glory days.

    I really do wish Nintendo didn't have to be like that. Of course I'll still support the official games and properties they make, but at the same time, it really hurts me that the higher ups at Nintendo just aren't seeing things the way we do. They tried their best to stop people from pirating and emulating their franchises, but of course, they failed to understand that piracy of this kind just can't be stopped, as it'll always find a way. I doubt that Nintendo will ever listen to us in regards of how people like me feel about fan projects that are just as good as some of their own iconic masterpieces, and nothing makes me sadder. I always wanted to make an OpenBOR style game with characters in the Smash Bros. series, maybe even some that didn't make it into the series, but of course, the biggest problem is that the big red N would waste no time trying to shut down the project so that it never sees the light of day. I personally don't think people like Shigeru Miyamoto, Kensuke Tanabe, Masahiro Sakurai, etc. want to see us this way, but... if I'm being honest, there's only so much they can do.

    I find it surprising that there are somehow still some games that went over Nintendo's radar. Super Mario Bros. Crossover was a game that allows you to play the original Super Mario Bros. as Mario, Luigi, Link, Samus, Mega Man, Bass, Simon from Castlevania, Sophia III from Blaster Master, Ryu from Ninja Gaiden and Bill from Contra. Not only that, but they included a bunch of skins for each of the characters and the hub world, intricate quality of life settings, anti-quality of life settings, the Special and Lost Levels layouts and a few other things as well. However, this game ran on Flash, which unfortunately shut down a couple of years ago. Good thing Flash Bound was made. Sonic Boll had a similar idea to Super Mario Bros. Crossover. However, instead of Mario and Luigi defeating Bowser with Nintendo characters, it was Sonic characters. The skins, map packs, music textures were all moddable if you knew how to mod and make levels using the tools required. The best part is that you don't need flash for this game.

    The main two I actually see where Nintendo is getting at is Full Screen Mario and the Super Mario 64 HD thing. They're basically copies of the original games just with either a longer screen or updated graphics. Sure Full Screen had the level editor but the core is Mario Bros 1, and the other is literally just Super Mario 64 on Unreal Engine. Interesting concepts sure, but they also made them both publically available for everyone to play, and when their core is the actual games, that does present a problem. As much as I do wish they released the games in a way where its easier to get standalone, they are in the right for those two.

    Eh, just because they can doesn't mean they should. while I get it with AM2R, as that would interfere with the official remake's sales, the other 2 not so much. Full Screen was just a funny but well made version of a game that pretty much everyone has. 64 HD was a remake of a game Nintendo did practically nothing with after the DS, and the VC port wasn't really going to sell many more Wii Us.

    Ooh, you wanna talk about Pokemon MMOs? Pokemon Crater. Used to love that game in... think it was middle school. There were three special legendary Dratinis with the types of the bird trio, and all Pokemon had multiple variants- you could get shadow versions, metallic versions, and I think there were others, too. Apparently it's still around as Pokemon Vortex, with a lot of new additions and also some removals.

    There has to be some form of work around for Nintendo and fan made games to do exist. If only Nintendo took the steps to make this a reality because I'm sure everyone would be happy. When they shut these projects down not only are they depriving everyone of a potential good time and the creators a chance to express their passion but Nintendo also loses the goodwill of their customers. There is a reason why they're often joked about being anti consumer often.

If I ever manage to become an actual game designer for other people than myself and not an indie one (though I wouldn't mind), I would rather work for companies like Sega, even though I grew up with Nintendo. Haven't played most fangames, but it sucks that Nintendo is so cruel with them, they're a love letter for their IP's and comunities For why they're like that with fangames, maybe it has something to do with Japanese culture? Cause I've heard Square Enix are also jerks with fangames, and that even Sega of Japan is bitter with those, despite how supportive to fancontent is their american branch No real idea on that, so just a theory

  • @template585

    @template585

    I think it likely a culture difference. Based on stories I heard from the country, the Japanese tend to get bitter, jealous, or prideful if someone either younger or haven't worked as long as they've worked in an industry is more successful then them. They'll showed those emotion mainly through action rather than words and my god, do their actions speak louder. Of course, this doesn't mean that ALL Japanese and their companies are like this besides, Western/America are pretty similar as well. I mean, take Disney for example, they literally sue a daycare/nursery for painting Mickey and Minnie on the wall.

    Nintendo should make a way to submit such games to them and then Nintendo returns it to the fans who made such games. After which the fans would take the feedback polish the their project and then release it in an agreeable manner with Nintendo. If Nintendo did that everyone wins I believe. Nintendo should not shut down creativity.

    I think Nintendo's ruthlessness towards fan games of their works is the reason why some of the fan games are in closed beta. Specifically, a game I have called Mario Multiverse. I originally heard about it from a KZread channel called Blue Television Games, often abbreviated to simply BTG. It looked cool. So much so that I wanted to play it myself. After a conversation with the BTG Discord (yes, BTG has a Discord), I was invited into the private Mario Multiverse. I gladly accepted. From there, it was a matter of waiting for the creator to pick me as the next person to play the game. It proved successful and I've been experimenting with Mario Multiverse as it evolved. There isn't a planned release date for the game. My assumption is that there are two main reasons for this. 1, it seems far from finished. There are a lot of requests and suggestions that have been going around in the Private Mario Multiverse Discord. 2, Nintendo would find out about the game and strike it down like the other games in the video. If you want to play the game for yourself, I have a few recommendations of what to do and what not to do. You can either go to the BTG Discord or the Public Mario Multiverse Discord, so you'll be able to experience a fate similar to me. From there, you'd have to come up with a reason why you want to be a part of the game. It can range from a simple passion of creating levels to finding bugs within the game to helping fix stuff behind the scenes. From there, you'd have to simply wait until the creator picks you. Once he does, you're golden. You can do all that or simply wait indefinitely for the game to release. I'd recommend you'd not download a leaked version of the game as it will prohibit you from ever playing the game. Period. Emphasis on *not*.

    Pokemon Brickbronze was a really good fan game that I'm sad got shut down. Although yes, it was made in Roblox of all things, it was still a pretty good game. I miss hanging out in the trading hub, exploring the location and trading for starters. I remember being in the final area and struggling with the gym leader right before it got shut down. Now the team that worked on it have moved on to Loomian Legacy, which is a goodish game, but it won't be able to replace Brickbronze, thats for sure.

Y'all just need to stop announcing stuff till it's almost done, do your best not to make the game too close to the original, and make the game mostly custom assets, disclaimers on the front splash screens along with an end user agreement acknowledging it's a fan game and some legal license stuff before continuing. I also didn't have any mention of "Pokemon" ANYWHERE in the code, assets, or dialogue of the game. I'm guessing that's why mine is still up. Trailer is on my KZread channel if anyone is interested.
