Variations on the Snowman;
The Best Exercise for Dressage Horses and Riders of ALL Types and levels!
The snowman is seriously one of the best exercises you can use to improve your canter transition and work on your horses’ suppleness, throughness, and impulsion!! This exercise is great for tense horses, lazy horses, stiff horses, and more! Wether your horse is just learning Dressage or doing the FEI levels, give this exercise a try!
I first learned this exercises from Conrad Shumacher - a renowned German master with my horse Gatsby. Gatsby was particularly tense and distracted at the clinic and this exercises did wonders to get him on the aids and focused!
Since then, I have tried this exercises with many students and horses at all different levels! I have yet to find a horse or rider that does not absolutely LOVE this exercise!
For the snowman, you will ride a lop sided figure eight making a small circle in one direction in the trot, and a big circle in the opposite direction in canter. You will do trot-canter-trot transitions each time before changing direction.
If you are confused, watch the KZread video!

In today’s video I also go over some variations on the snowman exercise if you need to make it easier or if you want to make it harder!
Give this a try and let me know in the comments how it goes for you!! I LOVE this exercises and I know you will too!! You will be amazed how much this exercise improves your canter transitions.
Happy Riding!
Amelia

Once again, the info is presented to all level riders. Love the homework for practice that doesn't require a PhD. The explanations of how and why satisfy my analytical, adult mind. Perfect.

Amelia, have you been talking to my trainer? My lesson last week was so similar, this exercise really made the change of direction much smoother in the serpentine.
I have used the original snowman a lot but this expands the concept so well! Looking forward to trying this so thank you!
Trying this tomorrow! I can’t wait to ride.
Love the snowman! Can’t wait to try these variations

Thanks Katie! It's so awesome isn't it! Hope you enjoy the variations and thanks for being a subscriber! Happy riding.
Can't wait to work on this in all the variations, thank you.
Love the variations!
My biggest question here, is did ever train up any of these horses from the gentling process & starting under saddle?? All of your horses are obviously well trained & already fairly advanced. It's a long way to here from the beginning stages of dressage. I don't suppose I'll ever get any of my horses to this stage. So much control involved! You're a joy to watch. Thankyou Amelia 🐴 💥 🙏

A lot of my current horses I purchased from Europe already started as young horses. But before that I spent many years starting hundreds of young horses on ranches. :)
I started many of the similar variations after seeing your original snowman video. I love this exercise for a host of reasons! Thank you!
What a great video! Figure eights have been my favourite exercise because you can adjust them to every gait and throw in so many transitions, and this is like a figure eight but better! I'm very excited to try it out. Thank you for the video :)
Brilliant I love this ❤️
Lindo trabajo, es hermoso ver la facilidad y sutileza del mivimiento

Hello Amelia! Watching from France, love your very useful advices and exercices. Thank you for your videos.
Excited to try this to improve the canter transition - thank you!
Love this. I laughed when I saw this today cause I remembered mentioning to you that I did the snowman exercises all the time when I met you in Wellington and Joseph said " what the blank is snowman?!"

Thankyou so much, I'm doing my first intro C Dressage test on the 27th of November so a lot of the information you have given me already is helping so much...I'm so excited but very nervous at the same time...as long as I remember to breathe I'll be ok !!😂🐴🤗 x
Will try this and let you know how get on . Thanks looking forward to start working on this
Love this exercise, going to try it on my 23yr old veteran who is unbalanced, hoping it will help us in the transitions and getting him more behind and correctly bending, not sure if it will be as relaxed as your horse but hopefully we may get there. Thank you for sharing
One of my favorites
Thanks for sharing Amelia!
Love this exercise !! ❤❤
Will try this tomorrow 🙂
I will do this. I can see a lot of possibilities for making this exercise ours.
Got to try this, thank you for the video🤩🐴
I do this with true canter to counter canter. Really helps with balance .

Oh yes!!! I forgot that one!!!
im going to do this today in my lesson !
Amelia I would love some explanation on your rein aids in these movements. Such as explaining if you are brining your right shoulder back and suppling with the other hand etc.
@AmeliaNewcombDressage

You always want to supple inside hand for the most part, keeping the outside rein supportive.
Good exercise!
Doing this on my next ride. We do a lot of flexibility exercises - Friesians need that 😉
My Mare is very very very .... very fast ... She gets scared of anything, takes off , she does not have a small relaxing canter.... How to get such an animal to work towards snowman ... after a working trot she seems relaxed but after a while she again gets toooooo quick ... Have got a wrong mare ... or is there anything that I could do to get her calm down .... I thought to train her for show jumping .. but now i started to doubt .....A little help will save me ... Thanks
Can’t wait to try this exercise!! We are working on our circles and this will be so fun, I think . Thank you 😊
