I just had an incredible duh moment I'd like to share. We recently ran out of Liquid Fence and I said as much to one of the landscapers who serve our yard. he mentioned some kind of mint spray that smells a lot better. I thought for a moment about shopping online for it and then I realized...we have invasive spearmint growing in our yard which I have to prune periodically! So I took some, soaked it in water and have been using the effusion to spray our flowers with. Three weeks of biweekly spraying and no deer damage! No harmful chemicals, no plastic packaging, no hydrocarbons to deliver to store, no cost to me! A perfect green solution!

I live in New Jersey also. My 1 1/2 acre yard backs up to a very deep wooded area with a stream connected to a lake. There are many critters in there especially deer. When we first moved here the deer used to bed down on my front lawn because this house was abandoned until we bought it. I guess they got used to being here. I wanted to start landscaping my new house but the deer would not leave! I have tried many things that were mentioned by others, the Irish Spring soap, the pepper, commercial repellants (which are costly)…etc. I tried it all. One day I decided to try making my own. I bought a 2 gallon sprayer, put two-3 squirts of Dr Bonners Peppermint Castile Soap plus 20 drops or so of Peppermint Essential Oil (cheap one) and fill with water. I spray that on my gardens at night once a week when there is no rain and for the past 7 years I get no deer or rabbits eating my gardens. I have Hydrangea and Hostas galore ….my flower gardens are lush and large filled with all kinds of perennial flowers like Cone flowers, Black Eyed Susan’s, African Daises, Day Lillies, you name it I have it…with pathways and little “rooms”. The deer will sometimes walk up but they smell that minty smell around the perimeter and never cross it. Occasionally there is a brave one, but I have witnessed one nibble on a burning bush that I sprayed a few days before and it ran off. It is a very affordable tactic and works wonderfully. Does not use harsh chemicals and does not harm the plants or pollinators. Give it a try…it works great.

For the deer repellent advice… Thank you Shauna! Thanks to new housing development for the first time in over 10 yrs we have deer. They leave all my plants alone but they’ll eat bird seed from my platform feeders at night. I’m going to spray your recipe around the perimeter of the yard first then around the feeder area. I like yours because it’s -peasant smelling for us humans AND repels the skeeters too! Ty again!

I started playing the sounds of deer predators on random nights here on my ranch in Northern California outside of my kitchen garden which was under heavy deer pressure. Since I started doing this, the deer have left the area and do not come back. I'm alternating with sounds of coyotes, mountain lions and even the T-Rex sounds of Jurrasic Park - The deer literally are terrified to be anywhere near the place ;>) My garden has never been so thankful ;>)

First year gardening for me also in NorCal. What county are u in? I’m in placer with heavy deer presence and having a hard time with young fruit trees and broccoli.

Last year the deer ate my apple trees, flowers almost everything I planted. I started looking up deterrents and found some recipes. The one I make is 2 cups of water, two eggs, 1 garlic clove or 1 tsp garlic powder, 1 TVs vegetable oil, 1 tbs dish soap and 1 tsp cayenne pepper. I blend it in my Nutra-bullet, run it through a strainer then put it in a spray bottle. I let the bottle sit in the sun a couple days so the eggs rot. I apply it to my plants once every couple weeks in dry weather and directly after a rain. So far it’s working well. I am in the outskirts of the Seattle Wa area. We have deer, elk, rabbits and raccoons. It is a battle for sure!

@@jatnarivas8741 no. I am not spraying on anything I plan to eat and I wash my hands after applying.

I put the flower pinwheels you get at the dollar store all over my garden. It has kept the deer for the most part out of my garden. Once in a while I'll get one that sneakes it's head over my fence, but it has worked. I use a ton of them It looks like I'm growing them. my neighbors joke that I'm trying to grow. My garden has grown for 5 years now and we have deer that will sit across the street, but not in my yard.

I used to decorate with those. I guess I should do that again, cuz its fun, but didn't think it was a deer scare.

Oh my goodness I needed this video! I just spent over an hour putting up deer netting on all my plants they love. I do this every evening and it wears me out. Most of my herbaceous border plants are deer resistant but they have been known to eat anything in our neighborhood. I am going to try the spray for sure!

Groundhogs: We had a problem with a groundhog digging a hole on the side of a concrete staircase at the front of the house. It actually dug a hole on both sides of the stair case and probably used the inside of the stairs to escape a predator. I kept on filling up the holes on both sides and it kept on digging it out again. I ended up purchasing two 12x12 inch mirrors and blocked both sides of the hole. I never had a problem with it after that and I assumed that the pest came around and saw its reflection and it figured that there is another groundhog living there.

Excellent advice. I've been combining deer resistant plants and non resistant. I use many of the techniques you mentioned. This year I switched to a concentrate spray, with a minty scent, called We Must Garden. I apply every Monday (so I don't forget) and more often after extended rain. Maryland 7a. Last winter I planted garlic cloves around my pansies and the deer and rabbits completely left them alone. I currently only plant deer resistant plants but have a large number of hostas and daylilies that predate the deer problem. I also use deer scram and start spraying as soon as plants break ground. I have a lot of plants but spraying usually takes no more than 30 minutes.

That is a great tip!!! I am going to try the garlic cloves! Some rabbits got to my sunflowers - I am going to put a few in the ground around the ones they didnt' get to see if it works here!

I use Firecrackers, Bird Tape, and Wolf Urine. My second line of defense is a Hunting License, a Deep Freeze, and a Friendship with a Meat Processor/Sausage Maker.

We use moth balls and they seem to work and you don’t have to replace after rain! Also slivers of Irish Spring soap we tie on some branches with small netting bags gotten at Michaels (found in the wedding shower section)! Hope this helps someone! Good luck everyone!

Mothballs are incredibly toxic to the environment and certain animals will die eating animals that have ingested them. Please for the love of all that is good do not use mothballs.

I've been using boxes and boxes of mothballs since the beginning of Spring but I find that I have to keep on replacing them because the crows take them. And they do slowly dissolve as you irrigate.

The Rutgers Landscaping list is great! We had an arborist help us last year who teaches there. I'm in NJ Zone 6B and we have a lot of deer.

I read somewhere to put bay leaves in the holes of rodents and pests and they will leave. I tried it on the mouse holes (I only suspect its mice) on my property and it worked. I no longer find piles of freshly dug dirt in my grass. I wonder if it would work for groundhogs. Bay leaves are easy to get and cheap, if you have never tried that it's worth a try.

Yeah another thing is that last year I didn't spray with the egg yolk and water Hayden Hayden my hostas but this year I'm going to do it and make sure I've been doing for years so that's it really does work I use other stuff like hot sauce and garlic and even with eggshells I just put it all in there take a paintbrush and just throw it animals it seems to keep everything

I used Hot Sauce mixed with a little lime juice. I also use a electric fence which is low power and it will keep the deer's away.

Hi there! New sub here and glad to have found your channel. Your formal garden and zen garden are beautiful!! Did you build these gardens from scratch? That's what we're currently doing in our gardens since we started with a blank slate. These are great tips for deer control. We have a ton of deer!! I actually cried when they took out all my day lilies in 1 night (petty I know but they only bloom 1 time a year!). I have used deer scram, but not the other spray. I'll add that to my arsenal! I have also used invisible fence and bobbex which work well when I'm consistent. That's the hard part! Thanks for sharing.

Thank you so much! We actually just moved here in December! So I'm learning what's here and there are several plants I've never worked with before. It is exciting to see what comes up. At my former home, I had a lot of cottage gardens and battled deer all the time. There is a herd here as well. So I"m with you on the deer problem! It's going to be an experiment for me to see what works best here but so far, the repellent I use is working well! My tulips are all intact and blooming. Yay!

I Must Garden deer repellent is good too. Minty smell. Does well. Thanks for the info.

Have not tried this yet but i will soon. Lost a few very nice plants and a some trees to the little diggers. I read of pouring ammonia down the hole and I do not plan on being so drastic, But i will wet some paper towels and stuff them in the holes and plug it with some bubble plastic to keep the ammonia smell contained to the entry or exit. This was great 👍🏼! I have spent so much money on different things to repel animals from my plants 😢. Currently using ‘Liquid Fence’. So far works great. In another part of my yard I am going to test using ‘ peppermint essential oil’ and cayenne.

I have successfully used a single strand of electrified wire about 3 feet above the ground for over 30 years. My garden is surrounded by woods with plenty of deer. Not one time has a deer entered my garden.

I am appreciative of this videos. Dogs can’t be outside 24/7/., plus the coyote or foxes I don’t want to put the, at risk. I cannot fence in 7 acres.

My plants are already established so I'm not able to plant Deer resistant. Thank you for this video!!!, because this is the 1st year They tore up one of my hostas.!, It grew early., So I have a bunch more that will be growing soon And I don't want them tearing those up!

Zone 9b. Deer are relentless! They are not afraid of us or dogs. We can't have fences so it's even more tricky to find colorful plants and flowers.

You can also add lines of twine to the top rails of your fence to make your fence look taller than it really is and they won't jump it either.. they don't know the difference between twine and barbed wire.. But they definitely know what barbed wire is... Keep in mind this most likely will funnel them to a lower area where they can jump... So it would all depend on how your property is set up..

I've had success with motion activated sprinklers. Also deer apparently do not like the taste or smell of "Milorganite" in garden beds.

I’ve used that before it does work! We had a motion sensor sprinkler at one point too. I think it broke.

I also used to have some plastic Stakes operated by battery that make a sound as deterrent. I think it works but all my units burned in the 2018 Camp Fire. I plan on getting some replacements soon, but they are costly. Let you know how it works out.

I have herds of deer visiting. They walk up my stairs onto my deck and eat flowers. They eat deer resistant plants. My garden is surrounded by a 6 foot fence with electrical conduit ( 10 foot high) tied to every other ot third post with a small windvane ontop. I think this messes up their depth perception too as I have not have had a deer jump the fence in the 10 years I live here

I cage the root base of my roses and all plants that ground hogs, voles, etc want to eat. I know they’re all around cuz they’re popping up in the grass and all around my flower beds but they can’t get to the roots and therefore they don’t kill my plants.

Deer are the one thing that haven’t come for a snack this year. I like the sound of the minty spray…some of them are hard to take.

If you have bears you might want to avoid anything with mint. They apparently love mint.

For over 40 years we never had a deer or elk problem. Late last year our dog died, (age 16 yr.) For the 1st time our property became a feeding lot for both deer and elk: deer eating almost everything in the garden this spring & early summer and the elk stripping and decimating our apple trees just as soon as they blossomed out. The reason our dogs were so effective over the years is that they live outside and sleep under a covered porch with freedom the roam day and night on the property. Once past the puppy stage they never leave our property and are never a problem for the neighbors & ranchers nearby. Didn't take the deer & elk long to figure out 'ol Grady was gone. We absolutely HAVE to have another large dog hanging around the place. Our outside dogs only come in during the winter months when it's very cold outside because once they learn to live outdoors, that's where big dogs prefer to be. Always had to coax 'ol Grady in - he never acted like he really wanted to be inside unless it was

No it won’t hurt them. I’d still apply though in the early am or later in day when they are less active.

I’m in NJ too and zone 6B/7A. The deer are awful here and eat the plants that everyone says they hate. The figured out how to get through my barriers too ugh 😑

oddly for some reason the deer here don't like yellow tulips. They will eat everything else and leave the yellow ones.

Do these repellent harm small fruit trees ?

I live in Tennessee, and the deer here can jump higher that the average house.

My problem is that I can faithfully spray after every rain, but if I don't get there before the deer do after a rain, they will strip my whole baby fruit trees, leaving them leafless, and having to start over. Consequently, my fruit trees are not more than two and a half feet tall after three years! There must be something I can hang on the tree beside Irish Spring, which many people say attracts skunks. Fencing is impossible. Any ideas on what I can hang in bags on the little trees?

You don’t have to spray after every rain. If there are herds on your property I would spray more often than recommended on the directions. We have deer on our property here and since I just planted mums, I am spraying them well weekly.

we evicted a groundhog from under our porch using ammonia. the smell annoys them and they move out.

Could grow Cascade Hops - Bought from beer making business. . Deer stay away from Hops

They hate Irish spring soap, slice the bar into shavings and put around the border of your yard.

The sad reality is that there are NO fool proof deer repellents. Some can provide temporary relief but it only takes one incident for deer to ruin a garden. The best strategy in the end is to learn the palate of deer resistent plants for your climate zone and design the garden around that. But even then deer will eat most anything after they exhaust their preferred plant food and become hungry enough. That's the uncomfortable truth all gardeners face.

Do not use antifreeze. That’s a torturous, long and painful death for the creature. Unnecessary and intentionally cruel. Dogs, cats, all creatures are attracted to antifreeze because of the sweet taste. Read up!

I totally agree SPRAY! Spray! Spray! Granular (heavy spreading) double fencing it on my list. Great video.

have you tried calling the police. those deer are homeless and hungry. it's funny they sleep in your yard. I don't think it sounds like very much fun spraying constantly. I feel sorry for the flowers too. I think people are funny about wildlife. we are too stupid of a species to outsmart mother nature

1. I don't spray constantly. 2. I garden around wildlife but organically try to prevent them from chowing down so I can grow pretty flowers - it works for me. 3. Noone is trying to outsmart mother nature. 4. You do you.
