It's for putting against your bed so baby can sleep beside you
The drop-side design is no longer recommended for safety reasons.

If your responsibil no problem. If you lived your life by every thing must be a 100% safe you wouldn't live. I raised 3 babies with one of these and they are full grown. Plus I've babysat over 38 kids and they all used it. Guess what no issues.
