The best BUDGET solo backpacking tent for UK weather? Wild Country Helm 1

Спорт

Here is a review of the superb Wild Country Helm 1 backpacking tent. This solo backpacking tent is perfectly suited to wild camping in the UK. The Wild Country Helm Compact 1 tent also has a small pack size and weighs just under 2kg.
It's reasonably spacious for a 1 person tent. Although it has 1 door and 1 vestibule it actually has a hidden storage space that can be accessed from inside the tent. The Wild Country Helm 1 tent is very well designed and though out. It's easy to pitch and withstands all sorts of weather conditions.

Winner of the Trail Magazine Gear of the Year 2023 and Best Value Award 2022, the Helm Compact 1 is a well-proportioned, free-standing 1-person dome tent. Designed for the outdoor enthusiast looking for a lightweight tent that packs down to a compact size.
Weight 1.99kg (4lb 6oz) / 1.74kg (3lb 13oz)
Number of porches 1
Number of doors 1
Packed size 35cm x 17cm
Season 3 season
Flysheet Stormtex 68D Polyester Ripstop PU 4000mm
Inner 68D Polyester Ripstop
Groundsheet and HH Aqua Stop 68D PU 5000mm
Poles 8.5mm WC Superflex Alloy
Pegs 12 x Alloy 'V' Angle
Guylines 4 x Yellow Reflective
A good choice for medium-duration backpacking trips where more space may be needed.
The inner has plenty of headroom and there’s a good-sized porch for kit storage.
There’s extra storage space under the rear flysheet which can be accessed from a small door in the inner.
The 1 person dome tent design provides more stability than a single-pole tent.
Quick and easy to erect, the flysheet and inner pitch together.
Great ventilation with a mesh panel on the inner door, plus a smaller mesh door with a cover at the rear of the inner.
Easy access to the rear porch is accessible through the small door on the inner.
Comes with a side-opening, tarp-style tent bag which makes it easier to pack away when it’s time to move on.
A good choice for backpackers and campers looking for a roomy 1 person tent.

I've had mine a year now, paid £160 new, absolutely great tent, light, small pack, plenty room inside, great in moderate winds and rain, warm in the winter and you can ventilate brilliantly with the little door at the back. Plus it has that extra vestibule at the back to put your pack. It pitches so quickly and all in one, I really cant fault it. Agree with your review. Great review again Andy

Just bought one last week after deciding I don't love getting in and out of my Naturehike CloudUp2 (no other complaints with it - it was bombproof in heavy rain camping in it for work a couple of weeks ago). I've decided I'm going small tent for festivals this year and leaving the Berghaus Air 4 at home - I hate waiting for it to dry on packdown morning when I could be on the way home. So my new Helm 1 Compact will get a first outing at Black Deer next week, then hopefully some wild camping before another festival in August.

Now I've really gotten used to it, and I really like it for 3 season use. I have the Panacea 2 for winter just so I have more room to spread out when I have more kit to carry. I’ve got the Helm 2 my mate has the Helm 1. They’re great tents. I do like the extra space of the 2, particularly in winter, but the flip side is the 1 handles wind better. We’re both about 6’1” and I think that’s about the maximum for the Helm 1, particularly if you have a thick sleep pad, the Helm 2 is probably good up to 6’3” or 6’4”.

Hi Andy. Thanks a lot for another great review. Although that you’ve already mentioned that the footprint is not really needed, don’t you think it helps with storing our gear, so it doesn’t get the moisture from the ground overnight? You could then store your backapack and boots in the side storage compartment. Also additional cooking mat wouldn’t be needed. Have you used the terra footprint before, does it add a lot of weight? Is it worth to buy it as well? Appreciate your reply, would be very helpful. Many thanks 😊

I got through a pretty stormy night at Angle Tarn in the lakes in mine recently - I was at a course a week or so later and the instructor said his ML assessment group had camped in the valley that night and still had some damaged tents! I got a slightly bent (red) pole probably because I hadn’t tensioned the side guy lines evenly… but the gusts must have been 40mph+ and from varying directions. If only they made it in the TN range fabrics so it was a bit lighter and less bulky it would be perfect!

@@BackpackingUK It's a single skin sil-nylon tent with a mesh inner door, a mesh ceiling vent I think on the other side, and a mesh second vestibule similar to the Helm 1. What attracted me to it were the price (£125 off Amazon) and its easy pitching. Reports suggest it can have a problem with condensation, but I think as an emergency shelter it's safer and more robust than a bothy bag. Regardless, a microfibre cloth can take care of condensation for one night if it came down to that, and one British reviewer considered it not as bad as some make out which re-assured me enough to buy it for the stated reason.

Andy says in the video you can buy it cheaper, a quick search and I’ve found it for £180 with many more at £200. I’m working class and I’d consider £200 as the top of the ‘budget’ range. Also, for me that’s also the most i’m willing to spend on a tent, not really interested in anything more expensive as I’m not going to get any more enjoyment out of my camping after spending an extra 200/300/400 quid on top. Also depends when you buy your tent. The Bobcat 1 was £79 at Go Outdoors a few months ago, now it’s £110.

In 2021 the helm tents were under £175 if you looked around. In fact my helm 2 was £160. It's a good tent, does well in the wind, and is versatile. I now think that it's in the mid cost category.

160 is all it's worth. It will fall to pieces.

I own the helm one and two. It is a good tent, particularly in high wind. However the clips break easy, the seam tape lifts, and the material wears quick. The stitching is coming undone on one of the corner pull out points and the pole sleeves are wearing where they cross. I've used it a bit but probably no more than 15 times. Given my experience thus far I'd say it won't last much longer. But you get what you pay for I guess. Would I buy another, probably not.
