The best brown trout loch in the Hebrides

Спорт

Scotland's Outer Hebrides are world famous for the quality of their fishing, for brown trout, sea trout, and salmon, and right at the end of the 2019 season I made the 6 hour walk to what was once reputed to be the best brown trout loch in the Hebrides. It was a fantastic end of season day out with rutting stags roaring on the moor and I managed a cast for a few sea trout on the walk back in. You simply don't get a better wild fishing experience.

Thank you Peter, I'm glad you enjoyed it as in my view it is simply the best fishing and wild sport you can get. So many people expect to catch big fish, or lots of fish, with no effort these days and as I get older I do appreciate that I will not always be able to walk 6 hours to a loch but while I'm able I will be putting in as much effort as I can to get to these wild places.

Glad you enjoyed it Jon, we are very lucky in having many hundreds of brown trout lochs so we have a lot to chose from and walking to the more remote ones can be a wonderful experience especially on a lovely autumn day.

Thank you, glad you enjoyed it Bob. This loch is about 6 hours walk (round trip) from the nearest access point, and even that is only accessible if you have a 4WD. Given that it doesn't get a lot of fishing pressure, there are the very occasional visitors but I would imagine it can go for years without being fished.

Thank you John, as you can see they are just my "holiday snaps" so they aren't high quality but I like to keep them nice and slow paced and am always pleased when someone enjoys them. I've fished most lochs south west of the Gress River down to the Garynahine/Achmore road but only a few north east of the Gress, mostly the ones between the Gress and Diridean. I've only done a few beyond the Bridge to Nowhere, full of good intentions but lacking in time!

@@caorach3354 Best holiday you can get, nothing to compare with it. Really worth trying a Claret Sedgehog on the bob, and a Silver Goats Toe on the tail, size 12. It has improved my fishing for trout, so much that i rarely use any other pattern. Tight Lines!.

@@johnmaclean9318 It is funny you saying that - I've always been a dark flies person, 30 years of casting a Black Pennell and a Zulu. However in the last few years I've found a few lochs where the Goats Toe and something like a Soldier Palmer work when nothing else will. This goes against my natural instinct to tie on a black thing, but it has also given me a few nice fish. On the other hand I've gone from fishing a full floating line to fishing a line with an intermediate tip so I'm no longer working flies on the surface, and I think this has helped.

@@caorach3354 I take a floating line to which I attach either a floating (usually), intermediate (sometimes), or sinking (occasionally) poly leader, depending on conditions. The choice of fly seems to matter less than how it's fished.

@@davids9549 I do something pretty similar but use one of the Rio Versatip lines - very expensive but I didn't really get on with the poly leaders. In terms of fly then I used to be convinced that it didn't really matter but of recent years I'm fishing a few lochs where bright flies really make a difference for some reason.

Hi Dave, thanks for your comment. A few people have said I should make a video about the gear I use but, really, I use whatever is handy and don't much worry about it so it wouldn't be a very good video. However, maybe once all this COVID stuff goes away I will get around to making, as best I can, a gear video. The rod is an 11 foot Leeda Volare IV for a 7 weight line and I use this rod for almost all my fishing at the minute. The line is one of those Rio Versitip lines so I can change the sink rate of the tips to suit as I use the same rod and line setup for salmon and sea trout. I also have an 11 foot Leeda Volare IV for a 4 weight line that gets some use as well but it isn't so good in the wind.

Thank you Jim, I did consider paracord but to be honest these boots are pretty much at the end of their useful life and will be retired soon anyhow. Apart from a few niggles, including breaking laces, they were comfortable and very supportive but breaking laces all the time really annoyed me especially when it was such a stupid mistake in the design.

Hi Ruairi, glad you enjoyed the video. You are correct and my accent is indeed from Northern Ireland but these days I generally fish on Lewis as the choice is almost infinite and there are very few restrictions on where you go, or what you can do, so it suits my style of fishing.

I'm afraid it is true everywhere these days in that people seem to have lost touch with the idea that sport is supposed to be difficult for it to be good sport. So many people want guaranteed numbers of fish of a size bigger than their mate caught last week and they don't want to work for it. We've lost sight of what it is supposed to be about, there aren't many these days who are willing to walk to hundreds of lochs in the hope that they might find that special loch where real wild trout might average 2lb.

You really don't need to go here as it is a long, long walk and you aren't short of good fishing close to home :-) As you might imagine I generally don't name lochs. Often I'm fishing lochs that only make small fish or that are really very dour so, in part, people really don't need to be marching out to them as they are no better than lots of other places but it is also the case that I don't want to encourage lots of people to be hitting particular lochs when there are so many very good options. In your case Crogabhat is a way better option, dour but decent fish. In due course there might be a Crogabhat video.

The Uists tend to sell their trout fishing, whereas Lewis and Harris focus on the salmon and sea trout, plus they have a few big lochs with easy road access etc. Lewis trout fishing tends to involve a bit of walking plus a bit of work in finding the lochs that are fishing well so it is a completely different thing, there are lochs on Lewis where a 2lb trout is normal and a much bigger one always a possibility but getting such fishing usually requires some effort.
