So you wanna read some Batman comics… Well, I’ve got some good news, you’ve got a lot to choose from.
If you’re unaware, Batman is DC’s most popular character, being one of the most iconic and well known superheroes of all time. And because of this, DC reeeeally likes to publish Batman comics. It feels like every other day there’s a new Batman-centered book, meanwhile other characters are left with scraps. As frustrating as this is sometimes, there’s kind of a good reason for it. A lot of Batman books are REALLY good.
Now, if you’re watching this, you’ve undoubtedly been recommended some of the most popular comics. You’ve got your "Year One", your "Killing Joke", your "Long Halloween", your "Court of Owls". All the biggest most influential stories that you’ve heard a million people mention a million times before. And that's boring. With the sheer number of Batbooks that are being published, we can do better than that.
So here’s my recommendations for my favorite lesser known Batman comics, that can be picked up both by newer readers and longtime fans.
With great power, there must also come great responsibility:

Easily the most underrated Batman story of all time is “Face the Face” It’s one year later after Infinite Crisis Batman is done being a dick, he has a new outlook and returns to Gotham after a year away. It has everything! A solid mystery involving criminals being murdered, Two-Face having an incredible arc, Batman & Robin working together in full form, and spectacular artwork (especially the covers)! But that ending where Bruce offers to adopt Tim, god that makes me cry like a baby just thinking about it.

The best Batman story that is criminally ignored by the fandom at large is Matt Wagners 12 issue mini-series that was collected in two volumes as Batman vs the Monster Men and Batman and the Mad Monk and together with some other stuff as Legends of the Dark Knight: Matt Wagner. The stories take place between Year One and the Long Halloween and retell some classic Golden Age yarns including one of the earliest appearances of Hugo Strange

  • @theirongiants

I started reading Batman by reading The Long Halloween. It was such a great and enticing murder mystery. But I felt there was a lack of an emotional angle besides Harvey Dent. But then I read the sequel, Dark Victory. Dark Victory was such an awe-inspiring story. It took the murder mystery angle of The Long Halloween but it made that even more powerful with the inclusion of Robin, and Batman questioning if his quest for crime is really helping. Then I read Batman: War on Crime and Batman: Ego and have been a fan ever since.

Death and the Maidens is also a really cool series. The Man Who Laughs is a cool modern retelling of Batman and Joker's first meeting. Batman: Night Cries by Archie Goodwin and Scott Hampton is a very thought provoking OGN about child abuse. Legends of the Dark Knight is filled with a lot of great stories, but my favorite is probably Prey by Doug Moench and Paul Gulacy.

Great choices, specially Batman War on Crime (my favorite Batman story) Here some stories I recommend: The riddle-less crimes of the riddler - besides being a fun silver age story, it's the first to give glimpse of Riddler insanity, with him trying to commit crimes without given Batman clues, only to fail because of his own compulsion. The Man who laughts - A great modern version of Batman and Joker's first battle in comics. Hothouse - One my favorite Batman vs Poison Ivy stories, actually portraying Ivy as creepy manipulative mastermind but also sympathetic, showing how the abuses she suffered through her lifes influence the methods she used against people. Requiem for Killer - If you think Killer Croc is just some generic brute who's in the stories for Batman to punch, this story proves the opposite, showing Croc actually finding a family with some homeless people he met in the swears and in the end teams up with Batman to save them. Heart of Hush - Written by Paul Dini, this sequel to Hush is far superior to the previous story, establish Hush backstory, giving more reason why he is so jealous of Bruce as well continues Bruce and Catwoman story, with very nice ending that really shows Batman human side. The Authobiography of Bruce Wayne - Speaking on Batman and Catwoman romance, this story takes place in Earth 2 and it shows how this two came to marry and give birth Helena Wayne. Instead of sily romantic story, it actually end up a very well written batman story, focusing on Batman dealing with his trauma and fear of being close to others. When he and Catwoman become couple, it doesn't feel forced but rather a natural evolution of their relationship through the story Batman Strange Apparations (or the Steve Englehart run) - A perfect exemple of how to create a new story for Batman while paying tribute to the classic. Not only Englehart created new character for Batman such as the mobster Rupert Thorne and the socialite Silver St Cloud (who becomes one the best Batman love interest) but he also brought back classic bat rogues and gave them some upgrades, like Hugo Strange (it's this run where Strange discover Batman secret identity and becomes the great villain we would see later in adaptations such as Arkham City). Plus this story ends with the iconic "Laughting fish" story, one the best Batman vs Joker stories of all.

You ever heard of “Batman: Night Cries”? Talk about underrated. That book doesn’t get enough attention. It’s all about child abuse. The Dark Knight Detective finds himself in yet another mind-teasing mystery when a new vigilante with his/her own brand of violent justice comes to town, targeting child abusers. There is a certain, sick pattern to the assailant's crimes, the particular way he/she kills his/her victims. It's as though the vigilante administers justice and is out for blood at the same time. With Commissioner James Gordon dealing with illegal drug dealers and personal family issues, Batman's only hope of capturing this new villain lies in the hands of a young girl who's too afraid to talk. This nifty little Bat tale is great! Archie Goodwin's noir-style writing works on a level that fits the Batman and the dark world he haunts so perfectly by today's standards of Batman storytelling. Also, there is a panel that shows Bruce Wayne and he somewhat resembles Robert Pattinson so that’s a cool little detail.

I love black mirror. It’s soo great and I love how it’s Dick not Bruce and it is in the same timeline as batman yr one. The art is amazing especially with the colouring. The story is so captivating. Also batman no man’s land is also underrated imo and batman detective comics rebirth run from 2016 which u mention coz not a lot of people talk about it

I read this one comic about joker by Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo and I thought it was pretty cool. It was a regular run of the mill comic where joker is being released from Arkham but it’s being told from the perspective of a henchman. He helps joker set up a bunch of traps and crimes for Batman and the whole time the henchman is like scared that he’s gonna pop out and beat the hell out of him and I thought it was pretty cool

I know this isn’t a comic, but I started listening to the podcast Batman: Unburied the other day and I am REALLY digging it so far. I was never the biggest fan of Batman growing up, but The Batman film really turned me around on the character. I did love his old radio serials growing up and this is like taking those to the next level.

I also am an outlier in liking King's Batman run. It's not perfect. I read it all in trade, and as I was reading it, I could 100000% see why monthly readers may not have wanted to read it month-to-month. I did really enjoy it as a full read though. I enjoyed the stories with Bane, the double date story, and the Batman/Catwoman series. Cold Days is also under-appreciated IMO love the 12 Angry Men style story.

I just found my dads comic collection collecting dust in the Attic they were in very good condition! I took the time to bag and board them all. 718 comics in total mostly dc from the early 80’s to the mid 90’s! He had 2 copies of the first appearance of the black mask. He’s got an original death in the family set And he got a booster gold issue 1 and a entire set of the joker series. In total there are 610 Batman comics with maybe only 30 duplicates. He also has a entire punisher run. I think I found a gold mine.

Morrison’s Batman is a masterpiece and might be one of my favorite runs with the character. I loved how they made some of the more absurd concepts of the silver age like Zur En Arrh, Bat-mite and the Batmen of all nations work in the context of modern Batman.

A great story that is packaged with most copies of “Batman Ego and other tales” now a days is the one shit Night of the Stalker or Darwyn Cooke’s remake of it “Deja Vu”. It’s basically Batman stalking and slowly taking out a group of thugs as they try to escape him all told from the thug’s prospective. Batman doesn’t say a word the whole story and is a terrifying presence throughout. I hope to GOD that they adapt it in any of the upcoming Reeveverse shows. Give me a 15 minute sequence in the upcoming Penguin show where Batman is portrayed as a full on Horror movie creature taking out goons from the shadows any day! You don’t even actually need to see Pattinson himself since it’s not from his perspective, could just shoot it with Silhouettes and shadows

Here's a fun hot take, All Star Batman & Robin was doing some genuinely intresting things. If they just toned Batman back even a little bit and didn't have that whole weird thing with Black Canary, it could've been pretty great. It ended early because of how long it was taking for each issue to release, but I'm SO curious to see where it could have gone. The end clearly shows Bruce opening up emotionally to Robin and the growth could've been great. Of course that's a lot of "should've"s and "maybe"s, but I just wanted to give my take. I will say that I went in knowing the reputation it has, so maybe expecting a litteral joke of a story meant that the genuinely good stuff just stood out more to me. Edit: I'll also admit that I probably haven't read as many Batman comics as many of the people here. I know a ton and Batman is my favourite character in fiction, but I'm not too much of a comic reader. I just have a lot of knowledge through youtube. Trying to change that though.

I recently read Batman Imposter which very much reminds me of Pattinsons versuon of Batman which made me love it even more but a excellent read and Black Mirror was great and loved Dick Grayson as Batman in this. Also collected the Batman and Robin 3 issue arc and it was very well done and like you said the water color like art was awesome 😎🦇

I didn't like Ego as much as everyone else seems to (still really cool), but I adore Selina's Big Score, which is collected alongside Ego in that one trade. There are also many fun one off stories in that same trade, so people should definitely pick that book up, it's well worth the price of admission.
