    Nice overview. Always been a Rumble fan myself as well as Darkglass. That Dingwall was screaming to be dropped 2 steps and played harder than a rugby match though.

    When shooting out combo's I don't think just going DI works because you don't get the sound of the speaker. For instance, I own a Fender Rumble 100 which I have used for many band practices. I have never got sounds from it like those in the video.

    I say this as a happy Fender Rumble owner, the overdrive on those amps is...not good at all. I keep the level and drive all the way off and use it as a mute. The Ampeg's overdrive sounds worlds better to me.

    Why is it that when most bass amps are reviewed, they’re DI’d out? I figured the speaker would be an important factor as well in the sound.

  • @Thirsty_Fox

    Could argue that the amp/speaker/mic colour the sound quite a bit... DI gives a good idea of the way the pedals change the sound

  • @Joe-hm1zk

    @Joe-hm1zk

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@Thirsty_Fox And while I totally agree with that argument, the converse is that electric guitars are never demo'd with just a DI out. I understand the frequencies are so drastically different that it doesn't matter as much for bass with how it sits in a mix, but the speaker still plays a massive role in the tone and how tight the bass is that ignoring it seems silly to me in a demo about a bass amp. Every guitarist has their preference in speaker, but bass is just like "eh slap it through the DI, put some compression and call it a day".

  • @Thirsty_Fox

    @@Joe-hm1zk You make a good point. Honestly I only really care for the playability/quality aspect of guitar reviews unless I know how the tone has been set up. The amp is responsible for most of the tone, in my experience, especially if the pickups are similar to other guitars. It's the reason why I can watch 10 reviews of the same guitar and really dislike the sound in half and love it in the other half. At least with DI there's a bit less of that going on, but just like when they use amps, that setup has to be taken into consideration.

    With combos I agree but since these are available as just heads you could just see it as a review of that. You already acknowledged how differently they sound depending on which speaker you use and so on. Nowadays especially with class d amps it's way more about the features than the sound they produce because through the same cab they sound all so incredibly similar... Which is a good thing imo. Much variety in small packets no matter how large your budget is!!

    Never seen a Sire in the flesh but if I ever decide to try a 5er I'll hunt one down. They seem to have a good reputation with reviewers I consider unbiased. Ampeg is a tough one for me. I know they do make some light weight products but they just seem to me to be still too reliant on their dinosaur products. And most of them aren't even made in the USA any more. The active Mexican Fender basses were always great value. It just took someone to come up with the idea of a weirdo paint job to get people to notice.

    I have a fender p bass and a sire jazz bass. The sire sounds amazing and gets all the classic jazz tones BUT it's incredibly heavy. Way heavier than my p. Both are alder and obviously the p is slightly smaller but it is very noticably lighter than the sire and I don't think I could play an entire show with the sire without my back aching afterwards.

    And well the Ampeg stuff is just Ampeg. They really only do one thing well and that is that classic growly Ampeg tone. The combos are really good at recreating that tone compared to the full blown SVT heads and the B15 and such. But yeah it's just really one direction with Ampeg and it's not a modern direction haha
