THE BEST BARYSHNIKOV (COMPILATION PART 1)

Mikhail Nikolaevich Baryshnikov (Russian: Михаи́л Никола́евич Бары́шников; born January 27, 1948),[1] nicknamed "Misha" (Russian diminutive of the name "Mikhail"), is a Russian dancer, choreographer, and actor, often cited alongside Vaslav Nijinsky and Rudolf Nureyev as one of the greatest ballet dancers in history. After a promising start in the Kirov Ballet in Leningrad, he defected to Canada in 1974 for more opportunities in western dance. After freelancing with many companies, he joined the New York City Ballet as a principal dancer to learn George Balanchine's style of movement. He then danced with the American Ballet Theatre, where he later became artistic director.
Baryshnikov has spearheaded many of his own artistic projects and has been associated in particular with promoting modern dance, premiering dozens of new works, including many of his own. His success as a dramatic actor on stage, cinema and television has helped him become probably the most widely recognized contemporary ballet dancer. In 1977, he received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and a Golden Globe nomination for his work as "Yuri Kopeikine" in the film The Turning Point. Also, he was in the last season of Sex and the City.

I saw Baryshikov dance when he was a young man recently defected from the USSR to Canada. He joined the Royal Winnipeg Ballet (my hometown company) and I had season tickets. I had no idea what I was about to see that night, and I sat through the performance with my eyes bugging out and my mouth hanging open. He did things that no human being should be able to do. I feel so blessed to have had that incredible opportunity.

Hi Leslie: FYI - Baryshnikov's sojourn at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet is not included in his entry on Wikipedia. I'm not sure how to do it, but Wiki is open to public input, correction and the like if you want to remedy this oversight.

in Canada, and in the USA at that time, the ballet was much weaker than in the USSR) Baryshnikov was just one of Kirovsky's soloists. The dancers were better than him both in the Bolshoi and the Kirovsky Theater. When Sasha Godunov stayed in the USA, even Baryshnikov was not so impressed even by the American audience. Everything is known in comparison. If there is no comparison and choice, then a good professional dancer might seem like the peak) If Mikhail had not stayed in the WEST, then he would not have been talked about so much in the world or in RUSSIA) 50% of his success is success defector dancer ...

Clearly, Baryshnikov still has no rival today, I doubt that he ever will. He becomes the music like no one else. His style is effortless yet super powerful, his technique is flawless, his hang time is almost supernatural, and he is a very expressive performer whose love and joy of dancing is absolutely fascinating.

When I was a kid, back in the 80s and 90s, Baryshnikov was the only ballet dancer I knew by name and the most famous in the world at that time. Legend has it that even though he was short for a male dancer, he had the highest jumps. It would be great if old videos of his performances were digitally remastered. The video quality is poor for a good reason - these clips are 35 years old at least. But after all this time, it still stands - he IS one of the greatest ballet dancers of all time.

I saw most of Baryshnikov’s performances in NYC in the 80’s and it was always an amazing spectacle for me. I was and remain a high level gymnastics coach and a 6th dan black belt in karate and Jiu Jitsu brown belt, but I had considered Baryshnikov and Bruce Lee to be the most talented performers alive and I still don’t think they have been surpassed to this day. Watching Baryshnikov display his technical mastery was amazing for me and it gave me a deep and abiding appreciation for the importance of technical execution in order to reach the heights of artistic performance and I carried this as the primary objective ever since while teaching gymnastics, martial arts and to a lesser extent trampoline and some diving teaching experiences where my students ventured into diving from gymnastics or trampoline. And this perspective served me very well. I haven’t seen Baryshnikov performances since that time but watching this video has reawakened my appreciation for his talent and abilities. To me Baryshnikov and Bruce Lee stand out as so far ahead of their time that so far nobody has approached their level of skill as yet. Bravo Misha. Bravo.

Some dancers today are finally catching up to his brilliant technique. I think he ushered in the modern male ballet dancers that we see today. The man was ahead of his time and just impeccable in his execution.

From the 2019 vantage point...He remains the most truly awesome dancers EVER! His talent shines even brighter today, compared with dancers knocking their brains out, flinging themselves around the floor doing acrobatic tricks and phony hi-drama pretending to be "Artists"...not having a clue what Artistry is. Mischa stands alone....perfection. He was born with the gifts and it was he who took it all to the highest level.

Very rare anyone comes into MY life I would actually go see....Mikhail...my sweet Lord in Heaven, you KNOW I would pay to go see him dance....beautifully gifted!!

I read recently that he studied gymnastics briefly before settling into ballet. Natalia Osipova also started out as a gymnast. They both seem to have that amazing precision in their movements and the ability to hang in the air.

Frankly there are contrary people that cannot let good things be said about someone without adding something negative. And there are fan-boys/girls of other male dancers who will resent such high praise of Baryshnikov without mention of their own favorite somewhere. Very immature....
