The Best Authentic WW2 Pilot Watch? - Stowa Flieger Classic Automatic- Review & Brand Overview
Ғылым және технология
Today I review a WW2 legend from the highly overlooked but well respected Stowa company from the black forest of Germany.
This deceptively simply classic boasts some very unique features that make it punch well above it's price. With unrivalled quality and craftsmanship, this German made icon is just the tip of the iceberg of what this amazing brand has to offer. For more details, check out the following link...

Steve, Im purchasing virtually the same watch you sent to TGV for review only with a brown strap. My question is when filling out the rotor style what did you chose for the "Create your own engraving" to simply get the standard Stowa markings you have on yours? Did you chose the empty white box in the drop down or what did you select? I just want the standard wording you have on yours. No engraving or special fonts. Thanks in advance.

Steve P hi, Ive just ordered this watch with the same rota, but I've just had an email from stowa telling me it only comes with the handmade rota, I was just wondering how you got that particular rota? regards matt
@Eleysia1981

Hi mate. It was just the standard rota that was supplied with the watch when I ordered it. Was no special order or anything
The name derives from "STO," for Storz and "WA," for Walter (Founder Walter Storz). Walter is usually pronounced as a "Va" sound and the S would have the "Sh" sound. Since the o in Stowa has no umlaut, it would be pronounced as a normal "Oh" sound. So I think "Shtova" would be accurate indeed.

Wie denn? Ich habe 'überall' in Deutschland gelebt und das deutsche Walter wurde überall mit einem 'V' wie in 'Vase' ausgesprochen, was wiederum dem englischen 'V' wie z. B. in 'very' entspricht.

@@SteffenRoller You are of course, correct in explaining the pronunciation to an English speaker. For him in Germany, if he sees a "V" though, the pronunciation would be wholly different.
I have this watch and travelled to the factory to collect it. They were amazing and I adore this timepiece.

I bought a flieger style watch two weeks ago and it hasn't left my wrist since. I haven't even wore a Seiko on Saturday. What's wrong with me?!
Excellent video TGV! I'm actually into the Fortis flieger, however that stowa is stunning' thanks for the good work! Cheers!!!
The intros just keep getting better and better! Stowa makes quality pieces and don't charge a fortune.

Good video Tristano. This is a very cool Fleiger watch. I have the 42mm Laco Memmingen , which is a hand wound mechanical. It is another beautiful German flight watch. The Germans really make some outstanding time pieces.
I know a bunch of guys comment on this but your introductions to your videos are outstanding!! Shows the time and dedication you put into your videos. Excellent work and reviews
I love this video . I come back and back to it time and time again year after year and really gives me an essence of that time.
Definitely one of my favourite reviews so far. Would love to see a review of the Stowa Antea KS
Thank you for bringing my Stowa Flieger 40 no date / no logo back to mind. I immediately bought a new strap for it and will for sure wear it as often as my Stowa Seatime Prodiver. Slowly becoming a Seiko fanboy, I don't have to forget my old treasures in the watch box.
What an epic intro! Love the clean, simplistic design German watches often have.
I bought one of these recently on ebay, wonderful quality and style from Stowa. This review helped me to decide to go ahead and make the purchase. They show up quite often on ebay for $800-900 pre-owned. They are $1100 new. The standard strap that they include is very nice.
The Intro was IL-2 Cliffs of Dover, great WW2 Flight Simulator
I know this review is 3 years old but I just ordered me a Stowa flieger. can't not wait!
Hi TGV, Just ordered the Flieger Sport. Mainly in part to the great review you did. Looking forward to receiving it Jan 2020.

I would love to see a duel between Stowa and Laco, I think the Laco watches are really underrated. I don't think you can get any closer to the original than with a Laco. Great video. Greetings from Germany.
I just bought my first automatic watch -Fortis Flieger. It is the smallest watch I've ever owned 34cm A mid century size but I'm I love it. I dressed it up with a padded leather pilot style strap. It feels like I have a tiny tank on my wrist. You give the best reviews👍
I love Stowa Flieger's. Although as a student, all I could afford for now was a Maratac Mid Pilot on sale lol. Great video, cheers.
I just got my Stowa Flieger Klassik 40 today. It suits me down to the bone. I'm a technically minded man that reads a lot of military history, so this watch really spoke to me. Firstly, it's completely utilitarian (what you call a "tool watch"). But it's also of superb quality and has those 1930's stylistic touches such as the onion crown and beautiful blued hands. The brown rivetted strap is both masculine and historically correct. I would recommend the Flieger to anyone looking for historicity and top notch German quality. For what you're getting, the price is a bargain, and the service and options available by ordering straight from the factory really set Stowa apart from the competition. I ordered the date complication with the cool engraved rotor.
Hey TGV, As a long time fan of both you and Stowa it is really nice to see you reviewing a flieger of this brand. I've had some Stowa's over the years and i have never been disappointed. Even with the increased prices i still think Stowa offers a lot of value for money. Not to mention their customer service which is one of the best i've ever experienced. My Stowa Seatime is one of my keepers: a true tool diver with lovely curves. Having 4 different bezels it is a joy switching looks. Would love to see you review a Prodiver, or maybe one of their modern fliegers (TO1, TO2). Regards from The Netherlands!
I really like that dial, nice and easy read very cool- thank you TGV

Nice review. I have just sold my IWC Mark XVI and having seen your review I cant imagine my IWC was any better. I have to say that when you spend so much on a watch your not paying for na necessarily better watch, you are paying for history and wrist bragging rights. So many of the recent watches, especially the Steinhart 500 titanium you reviewed are awesome pieces. I actually purchased the Steinhart based on your excellent review and was not let down. truly amazing, and on a decent strap unbeatable.
@The Urban Gentry, thank you for the great review. What do you think about Stowa vs Laco Fliegers?
Great review, I have looked at this particular watch a number of times and was pleased to see the review, much appreciated. It will be interesting to see if and when they move away from the automatic ETA movement. Cheers.

Thank you Bob, great to hear I could help you with this one. From what I have heard, a lot of copies have under the table deals with ETA so unless Stowa go in-house or Sellita, they will stay with ETA. I honestly would not worry. Best regards, TGV
I'm loving the Prodiver Carbon black, very simple yet striking designs

Wish I would have seen this before I bought my Archimede 39mm Pilot. I didn't know much about the heritage of Stowa and the Archimede had lots of options. Its still currently on its way but learning the history of this watch and the craftsmanship in it, Im a little envious and regretful now. Great piece.
Another great review of something I didn’t know existed but now can’t live without. Where would be the best place to view/acquire one in the states?
Fl23883 is not the reference number. It's a Luftwaffe proofmarking, certifying the timepiece for service.
The intro is fenomenal, thanks a lot TGV

+1, it completes the Flieger aesthetic, for me. I ordered a reddish brown riveted strap to put on my Laco Black Automatik 42. The grey one it come with looks cheesy. Couldn’t find one I liked in the US, had to ordered one from Poland 🇵🇱, on eBay. Cheers.

This is the class channel for watch reviews. Great editing , commentary and selection. Keep up the amazing work, never disappointed with any of your reviews. Bravo!
Just wanted to ask if they corrected the reflective problem on the classic 40 ?
TVG, love the intro! Just great! When I think of WWII German watches I think of Tutima and Hanhart which both made watches for the Luftwaffe. The Hanhart has the ETA movement but I am unsure about the Tutima. I will check these Stowa watches out .... Great video, thanks for sharing!

Great watch!!! Very similar looking to the IWC Big Pilot, but for a fraction of the price!!! Definitely planning on purchasing this at some point in my life.
Great review! I'm really in love with this watch. With a dressed up band do you think this would be acceptable (albeit unorthodox) piece to wear for more formal occasions?
Just picked up a Marine model a month or two back, can not recommend it enough. Dressy, yet utilitarian. working as a Passenger Conductor it is my go to dress watch for accuracy and clean appearance. Simple white dial with a date complication for added use, I highly recommend taking a look at the Marine collection. It is truly unique.
Great video as always TGV! I've been wanting an aviation piece for my collection, and am keeping my eye out for deals on this Stowa. What do you think about this versus the Damasko DA46? Time for a duel?
Great video and appropriate for Memorial Day. I did not realize 5-watch companies made the Germany Flieger. I purchased an homage awhile back and was thinking of the IWC. I will strongly consider the Stowa. As you said, it is a watch that needs no introduction, anyone seeing in on your wrist can I identify a Flieger. Cheers. Tom

Great review TGV. I must admit, I didn't like flieger watches and simple complications either, until I started needing reading glasses :-) Enjoy your youth my friend!
Your first pronounciation at 0:50 was fine ;) its "Schto-wa" like Storz Walter, the founder of the brand. So the "w" sounds like you pronounced it at 1:14 i hope this helps And the text on the leather strap means "real leather, handmade, skin friendly" greetings from germany

Hey TGV! I'm just getting in to collecting watches and have been watching a lot of your videos. Great content! I recently ordered a Tisell 40mm flieger style pilot watch with a B-dial. What's your take on the brand? Do you have any direct or indirect experience regarding Tisell? Seems to be relatively unknown. The specs for the watch seemed like great value for money. I was deciding between a Laco and the Tisell but ended up with the Tisell due to pricing and size. Regards, Anders from Finland
Hi TGV, I'm in bit of a dilemma here. Stowa Klassic Flieger 36mm or Sinn 104? Any opinions? Would buy both if I could...
Great vid. I am interested in getting the B-Uhr. I am a bit stuck. Should I go for the Stowa or the Laco? Looking through the web it seems Stowa have the better quality, and Laco are closer to the original. Have you seen both? Are you able to compare. Thanks

I just got the hand winding (ETA 2804) version. It's a lovely piece. The onion crown, case, dial, and lume are as TGV describes: minimalist, but very smart-looking, well-executed, stylish, and overall, the Flieger Classic 40mm grows on you very quickly. It's been on my wrist non-stop since it arrived. It is a bit pricier now in April of 2019, though; current price for the hand winding Flieger 40 is 899.16 Euros, or 1,010.75 USD. Still good value for money IMO if you're into mechanical watches and like the Flieger's aesthetic but don't really want to shell out 6-7k for an antique or wear a dinner plate-sized replica. The hand winding movement is pretty good, too. I'm noticing only about a +5 second per day variance. Not bad for a hand winding piece.
Hey TGV, what a review! Can you please manage to get a Laco Flieger a review? A comparison to this particular Stowa would be the finest. Thanks!
Thanks for the recent reviews. Now I am torn between the 36m and 40m version of this watch, the Sinn 104 and Stowa marine klassik. Please help! FYI slender wristed as well at 6.25inch
What is the brand of calipers, also can you do a review on Ball Eng ll watches
I had overlooked this watch, but will check into it further. I really like the domed sapphire. They did a very tasteful job. I think this would fit me better than the Sinn 856.
Great introduction. 👍
The only pilot style watch I have is the Omega Dynamic date. It's quite small, I think 38-39mm wide but it's quite legible. Great review as always! Also noticed the new TGV NATO at wrist candy watch club, looking good!

I bought the Steinhart because the Stowa was so expensive. It also looks great on my 8" wrist. The Unitas 6497 is beautiful. I know Steinhart has a bad reputation because of the homage submariners, but their fliegers are FAR more beautiful than Laco's for the price, and in general a small fraction of the price of Stowa (or God help us all if Lange started to make them again out of unicorn horn and fairy dust). I love my Steinhart B-Uhr. I will send it in to you if you want. It is really quite lovely. I want others to know how wonderful this watch is.
