I’m an anime only cuz I spoiled the manga surprise for myself. In my opinion, a good show should always be good throughout to be “good”. That being said, some of my favorite shows start off very slow. So I understand the frustration. (Reborn! Is my favorite anime of all time and that starts off SUPER SLOW!).

@@MooseKINGstudios depending on what surprise you have spoiled there might be some more waiting in store so I would say stick to the anime until it ends without spoiling yourself further. I think the thing that makes it difficult to explain is the overall twist about how the world in Undead works, as a manga reader the reveals are always a high point of the series and you want people to experience it the same way. In terms of the quality though I am of the opinion that it has always been good since the beginning, the positive reactions to the first two episodes can testify to that. It's just the writing, pacing, design, and setting of the manga are so different with contemporary shonen series people find it difficult to just let go and enjoy the story without having everything making sense from the get-go.

As someone who came into Frieren almost entirely blind, mainly knowing how well-regarded the manga was and that the director had been responsible for Bocchi the Rock last year, I was… devastated, I think is the right word, in a positive sense. The way that it uses such a simple, straightforward and sincere take on the high fantasy genre to say some incredibly resonant and profound things about mortality and how time makes one reflect upon the past and transforms even trivial events into things deeply consequential took me completely off-guard and shattered my heart into pieces. In the episode where Frieren and Fern search for flowers, there is this little moment where Frieren remembers Himmel first telling her about blue moon weed in passing, and without any word to the effect being said, there is this realisation that she finally understands not only how he felt about her, but how she felt about him, decades after he had already passed away, and I was speechless. The only thing keeping me from sobbing was the fact that I was watching it with friends and felt the tiniest bit too self-conscious about completely breaking down.

I only found out about it when I saw the ONE HOUR AND A HALF premier of the show on a licensed anime channel here on YT. To put out a movie-length introductory episode for an anime series is extremely confident of the studio (which is Madhouse btw) and that just made me interested. And boy do they freaking deliver. A Fantasy genre anime with an unexpected twist in that the show began during the Epilogue of the standard Fantasy storyline? With no Isekai in sight at all? With actual emotional heavyweight plot beats that WORKED? Also the promise of the show's antagonists actually being Evil instead of just pushovers? WITH 26 PLANNED EPISODES??? I don't watch anime much these days (the last time I was so excited about anime was Chainsaw Man and Violet Evergarden) but Frieren really made me excited to wait for the episodes to drop.

Undead Unluck is a miracle that it survived the Shonen Jump axe back in 2020, when even the new manga by the Beelzebub and Toriko author got axed. I remember reading it for the first time and thinking it was probably going to get axed in 20 or 30 chapters, but it didn't. The story and characters just kept getting better and better. I noticed something interesting about Frieren: You are sneakily being put into her shoes, in form of character moments. The show shows many swift moments where we get to know some characters more, but they are so fast that if you don't pay attention, you'll miss them. Much like Frieren, to whom a whole year may seem like a blink of an eye, those moments are easily missed.

Biggest pleasant surprise this season for me was Tearmoon Empire. I expected it to just be another take on the "Girl becomes the Villainess and must avert her own death," genre of story, but it actually does some unique things that have grabbed my interest. Just a few things to potentially peek people's interest in this show: the MC has character flaws but is/was never a horrible person, just someone spoiled by her station in life and who grew up ignorant to the plight of the people, so she genuinely tries to learn from and correct her mistakes the story thus far has balanced dark and emotional moments, with some genuinely solid moments of comedy the people who caused the revolution are not depicted as totally evil or unjustified in how they treated the MC in her previous life the supporting characters have distinct and memorable personalities and are written in a way that lets them simultaneously be both capable and dumb when the story needs them to act in a certain way

I'm just hoping the anime maintains a consistent energy throughout, because from what i've seen stories in the villainess niche are more likely to fall apart the further into the season you get. Either because they neglect worldbuilding early on in order to reach the action more quickly, or reach a comfortable place in the story arc halfway through the season so it just meanders around for the remaining runtime.

One of the things I've been missing in reincarnated/returned villainess anime was having more serious tone (Heretical Last Boss sort of tried getting there, but to me didn't quite land). I was wondering whether the trauma of literal decapitation would shift the tone somewhat, but the trailer I've seen made it unclear. Isekai is just, SO convenient for worldbuilding I think is the big problem. It's a lot easier to give exposition to someone new to the world than someone from it who should already know these things. Frieren so far excels I think because it's worldbuilding doesn't need too much explanation so far, and what little it does is conveyed through it being historical and conveyed to Fern who's still young

@isaac_marcus i definitely agree! its an easy formula, and like i said i do enjoy isekai (both of the more well thought out and kind of garbage varieties). but man is it fun to see something different for once! hopefully more authors will follow in those tracks. you can also easily go the witch hat atelier route, which also has a main character be introduced to a different society as an outsider, just Without the isekai elements. in that case its just that witches are both omnipresent in this worlds society while also keeping their secrets very well hidden- it uses the same 'trick' as isekai tend to but keeps it to regular fantasy, with some amazing worldbuilding and a really fun magic system to boot.

As an Apothecary Diaries light novel reader, if the anime is even half as good an adaptation as the trailers promise, it will be my anime of the season, possibly even of the year. I hope the anime takes its time with the pacing- the slow pace is ESSENTIAL to the storytelling. It NEEDS the time to set up the world before the ball can truly get rolling, but once it does, it NEVER stops. Not even manga readers truly understand what’s in store for them in the arcs (and major scenes) to come. No, the frog cannot even begin to compare to the inhuman squeals I let out upon reaching the end of light novel volume 8.

Undead Unluck is a maater class in set up and payoff when it comes to world building. Because rereading the manga after you catch up shows how much stuff has been set up that won't be paid of for dozens of chapters. When Billy fought Juiz and she activated Unjustice, the resulting actions was him blowing Juiz's arm off. Naturally then his true vision of justice is then the opposite of harming Juiz 3. Don't get me wrong, The Promised Neverland is always good about its set ups and payoffs, but Undead Unluck just takes it to another level entirely. Of course, I can't tell you what exactly it does without major spoilers. However what I *can* say is that it can provide set ups that you only realize were set ups after the payoff happens. It's a series where every time there is some kind of twist, everything that happens before it follows the rules that were stated after it. There's a tremendous amount of re-read value, and even though some revelations are really obvious most of them manage to be surprising (In a good way).

it's crazy how in a season that's basically filled with GL (shy, vexations, stardust, ilwtv) and adjacent (100 gfs), the one that's known in its LN form (villainess) to be one of the most influential ever is the one having to fight off the competition. I will say that the art of villainess is intentional since its trying to use the budget constraints to look like an 00s shojo otome game. like the eyes were a dead giveaway (also seriously go fucking watch it. it gets like famously good with this/after this episode coming up since the real setting/conceit gets shown. @@skeletor8951 Yeah. the main joke will take more of a background. Actually, that process even started with first promise, Rae becoming the maid and that last conversation in second episode. I would describe it as peak queer fiction, discussing a large range of topics from homophobia and transphobia to rape and incest, even poverty and the church to some really philosophical topics like longevity of love and identity. It is pretty good at writing a story and foreshadowing future plot points and while it's world is somewhat standard until hitting the fifth volume, it serves it's purpose. Characters are good, even if most don't get a large spotlight, when looking at the entire story. There is a lot of them, and the focus is on the two main ones. Although, to be honest, Rae became really fascinating to me only in the last novel, something anime won't get to. Claire became really fascinating to me in the second half of the first half of the story, something I hope anime will cover. They are both very well explored by the end of first half, even if some things about Rae don't fit perfectly with the knowledge given to that point. So if you really dislike the gimmick or find Rae very uncomfortable, I recommend skipping, it will stay in the background for the entirety of anime, even if progressing further and further background as characters get used to Rae. The gimmick is dropped after the first half, but anime won't cover that.

Shangri-la Frontier is a breath of fresh air because it’s an Isekai that isn’t trashy or “if you die in the game you die in real life” bullshit. Just a series about a videogame with deep game mechanics to keep you going. Undead Unluck has one of the most creative power systems and world building I’ve seen in a long ass time. Not only that but having the team behind fire force shows that you can leave SHAFT all you want, but shaft can never leave you. I think it would be worth to eventually make a video about great series that proved themselves after a rough start, as that would help a lot with Undead Unluck. The story gets far too good to just let a potentially significant number of people walk away after the first few questionable chapters/episodes.

For people who are into yuri, I HIGHLY recommend I Favor the Villainess (though I do get why it didn't make the top list). While it's story starts pretty slow (I do think it might get more interesting after these first few episodes), and I am pretty sad that the animation doesn't seem to have been given much space to do anything interesting, the story does some interesting things that I hope will make it into the show, (directly talk about lgbt issues in a very frank and upfront way, like, as in the author is a lesbian and the light novel outright discusses the experience of being a lesbian in Japan-- I promise that's not a spoiler to say, it's a big theme of the story) and the world is actually a lot more complex than it looks on the outset, though the revelations as to how, what, and why, are very late into the light novel and I will not spoil them here. What I will say is that it is a real treat and very sweet, despite its flaws. I may be pushing it because I'm desperate for more yuri-- if shows like this one do well, maybe they'll make more. And maybe they'll upgrade the animation a bit...

This is the most-stacked season I can remember. I'm going with "Dr. Stone" as my #1 like I always do. Even if something else is technically better, "Dr. Stone" will always take the #1 slot if it's in a particular season. Also, I can't be the only one who gets confused by all of the factions and characters in "Dead Mount Death Play", right? There's just too many factions.

Coming in as an existing fan of Paradox Live: you have GOT to. And I mean YOU HAVE GOT TO stick around for this show. The characters are all exceptionally written and the story is a true sci-fi cyberpunk drama that celebrates rap and hip hop in all forms. I am SO happy with how the first two episodes have come out so far (I even got to see the world premiere of the second episode!) and I'm extremely excited for new fans coming into the series who get to experience it for the first time. Already there are SO many foreshadowing bits and creative directing choices that are fantastic spots for people like me and will be fun to realize as the plot unravels. If you enjoy the music definitely go check out the rest of the songs that are from it - a ton aren't going to make it into the show and there's a ton of really good ones that you'll be missing out on. I personally recommend Ambitious by BAE!

Funny you should compare Firefighter Daigo to Space Brothers - turns out it’s airing in the same timeslot! Space Brothers moved to the slot just before Detective Conan (5:30 PM Saturdays on NTV) in spring 2013 and stayed there till it ended a year later. That slot’s featured anime ever since, changing shows every two cours - among a number of one-offs like Love All Play last year and Ultimate Otaku Teacher back in 2015, it’s also the home of Yashahime, Mix: Meisei Story, the Ace Attorney anime, and every season of My Hero Academia from the second on. (Given MHA’s usual schedule, it’ll probably return in the spring when Daigo finishes.)

I saw the trailer, decided to take a peek at the source a week before the anime, cuz these kinda plots can ether fizzles out hard or be real good and then I caught up in a week hnnnnng my sleep. Now I dont wanna watch the anime cuz I remembered how most mangwa adaptations have gone. Nobleese's was a war crime. It didnt dwell in parts I wanted as long as I thought it would, cuz I wanted that shield hero princess moment then drop the series, but what did happen was more mature and then the unexpected Spanish inquisition happened and it got a pay off. The scale was much larger then I thought it was going to be. Reminds me alot of SSS class Unalive Hunter but more psuedo high fantasy and less edgy not including crow mask.
