The Best and Worst of The Canon R System

Ойын-сауық

In this video, I discuss the things that I love and am not so crazy about when it comes to the Canon R system. There are absolutely reasons why the Canon R system is so popular, and we explore those in today's episode. But there may be some things about the Canon R system that might make you want to avoid it all together. We also go over those aspects.

I bought the R when it first came out - I'm a retired (mostly product and marine) photographer who had to quit for years due to cataracts and follow-up surgeries. The EOS-R was a present to myself when I got my vision back. I've had that camera going on 6 years now and while it's far from perfect, I still love it. Just last month, I added an R7 - what a beast for the money! Again, imperfect, but what's perfect - it's still WAY better. And I find the capabilities mind blowing. To be honest, my old pro gear was all Canon EF (and I went with EF because of my good experience shooting FD ...), so it was natural to save money on lenses and just stick with Canon. I've added a bunch of the less expensive new RF lenses (mostly great, couple of blah), and a metric ton of vintage glass just for the fun of it. There's nothing like spending like 80 bucks on a lens and getting a unique look that is hard to get otherwise. What would I like? RF lenses with EF ergonomics - those slick-sided lenses just make me look to find the rings, which are often hard to see. They're almost disguised a lot of the time. I'd like focus ranges on the lens body. I'd like Zebras in live view. I'd like quick firing flash (like the Olympus OM system) so I can do flash-enhanced focus bracketing in camera (I guess the R3 can do that - but it's lousy for everything else I do). I want 3rd party lenses on the full frame cameras. I want 30fps with no wobble or distortion. What do I like - I can't judge against other systems, as I haven't used them. But, colors are wonderful, and I am able to make the camera do things I could NEVER make a DSLR do. And, now the R7 is even better. The autofocus makes my head spin, it's so good. Focus bracketing is more fun than a photographer should be allowed to have. Frame rate opens so many doors for me, and 32mp in a crop sensor is just fantastic (though I should note that you have to REALLY pick your lenses and settings carefully, it's hell on lenses that don't resolve or have purple fringing etc).

Great, practical review. I think you hit the main points. The lenses and overall reliability have been just great. My main usability gripe are the arbitrary restrictions on button customization (some buttons can be adapted to certain controls, some cannot-why not let any do anything??) and no labeling of custom modes (I can’t remember what c1, c2, and c3 are, especially now that you can save entire configurations to the card…and if I could label them with a word, life would be better. There are many nooks and crannies to the settings which feel like legacy hacks more than a clean design but I understand that Canon has to be pragmatic to fit with existing user expectations and cautious not to make things too complicated, and they’ve done well with a system that has evolved 30+ years.

I'm also a longtime Canon user. I love their ergonomics and their menu system. That said, the menus have some odd English-language quirks that could be addressed by firmware. For instance, "enable" and "disenable" instead of the much simpler "on" and "off'. C'mon, Canon.

Changed to R7 a year ago coming from 1D3 and 7D. Sold all my Sigma EF lenses and most Canon EF. Just kept EF-S 10-22, EF 28-135 is and EF 100-400 L 5.6 is ii. Bought a TTArtisan 35mm F0.95. Very happy. I live in the sticks to shoot birds etc almost daily. Very satisfied. To me, it appears there is a huge amount of snobbery when it comes to lenses and cameras. If it is a Leica it has to be fantastic. If it is an RF it costs too much. From what I can see, these RF lenses outperform anything on their price level. That won’t stop me from wanting to pay less though. Preferably nothing… Oh well.. I am working towards a RF 100-300 with TC’s…

I've been a Canon shooter since 2009. It wasn't even my first choice, I only went with Canon because chosen Olympus was out of stock at the time. But I've never had any problems with Canon cameras, so I've never actually needed repairs on the camera body. However, I do have some criticisms about the R system. My main complaint is the inconsistency in button layout. The original EOS R seemed like a big departure from Canon's usual ergonomic design, and newer cameras like the R8 and R10 are different from each other as well. This inconsistency is frustrating because it messes with muscle memory. Another ergonomic issue is Canon's obsession with the "LOCK" function. It's been the most annoying feature on their cameras since the DSLR era, and even if you disable it, you can't assign that button to something else.

Weight / Size and Cost reasons I didn’t move. I had a bad experience with their printers, so I stayed away from cameras. Thank God HP doesn’t make. Camera, it would never see the light with me. I’ve done Lumix, Pentax, Olympus, SONY and now Fuji. I’ve always been interested in Nikon. As a kid, I always noticed National Geographic photographers used and I always thought those guys were the greatest photographers. What’s the saying?…. When you’re on the top… there’s only one way to go. I think many have thought Nikon’s days were numbered? From what I read and hear, they may be turning the tide. Z8 has my interest at the moment. Still enjoying Fuji and am optimistic they’ll get their focus issues fixed (eventually). Question will be … how long to wait? Very balanced review! Kudos!

I left the Canon R system for Fuji about a year ago. Canon is a great camera system however I left due to the shear weight and cost to add L glass to my kit. I started out with an EF 24-105 mm L lens and another sigma mid range Art lens and both performed well with the adapter however after several mountain hikes with this beast, I had to downsize my kit. You are correct, Canon has the best in camera menus and is easier to set up than Fuji. Guess I like the idea of working to get a great shot in full manual with the Fuji. Canon makes it very easy. If I were shooting fast action all the time, no doubt I would be on the Canon R system.

Hate complicated menus. I’m coming from the simplicity of the Leica M240 system. But ageing eyes could increasingly do with an autofocus for faster moving subject, such as children/family. My first mirrorless was the M6 M2. My second body was. 90D. I took every opportunity to shoot anything that moved. I abused that gear. I later got the original R shoot weddings and events some journal shots with the non L 85mm and 50mm. That’s all I could afford. That R was dropped down a flight of concrete steps, caught in a tropical down pour and dropped kick at a wedding. It never stopped working . I now shot with a R6M2 and 2 R8’s . I shoot professionally with the 28-70 F2 and the cheap 35mm 1.8. I have earned 10x my investment. The gear is expensive $$&. However I never expected to begin with a R5 and L Glass. Have plan it took 5 years for me. I gripe with Canon is the constraints on the R mount also limit access to glass I need for my work…. A faster 35, a lighter mid range telephoto. Sony , Nikon and Fuji have better glass variety. Sharp is good. I can work for sharpness. I look for focal range options and A FULL size video jack. 😡great post KD!

Currently a Sony shooter but right now jumping ship to Canon. Was shooting the Sony A7R5 but this camera is to slow for me. (Only 10FPS max) and would like more FPS. I had a lot of missed focused pictures and finding myself to struggle a lot with the auto focus system. So i borrowed a Canon R5 and this made me feel like cheating, it felt easer to use and had way more pictures in focus. The nail in the coffin is the FPS count when using a 3th party lens. If i bought a a9iii but use a sigma lens it would max out at 15FPS. This cap is pure to make you buy sony lenses. Feels like tou are beeing messed with.

  • @KevinDeal

Most cameras do have it, but the feature is turned off by default. The R100, while a powerful camera, is considered an entry-level camera and that beam assist is super useful to a beginner, so Canon probably by default has it turned on with the R100. If I remember correctly, my R50 had it on by default and I turned it off. I personally don't use beam assist, but it's good to know it's there if I need it. Thank you for the kind words. One thing I think you missed that is actually of importance to studio product photographers is that only the r3 has support for focus stacking with flash. Then there’s people on the Canon forums suggesting I use Led lighting. That is not a viable option for many. Hopefully the new r5 mark ii that should be announced this month will have that feature. That’s one of the things that has stopped me from switching over. The other thing is lack of mid range priced telephoto lenses. Would really love to see a 180-600mm, and a 400mm f/4.5 like Nikon have and I’m not a fan of that RF 100-500 4.5/7.1. Would have preferred a 100-400 4.5/5.6 like Nikon and Sony have. Sure that extra 100 mm can be of use to wildlife photographers but 500mm at f/7.1 just doesn’t create enough separation from the background when I shoot outdoor sports and is not great in low light. Of course I could limit the max zoom to around 360mm and still get f/5.6 but still I’d prefer an RF 100-400.

  • @KevinDeal

Yes, I try to keep my pros in cons pretty general about the system and not so specific to one model of camera with one specific feature. However, from your standpoint, I can see how import that feature would be to you. I shoot often in the studio but never have the need to focus stack with flash. Out of curiosity, which other camera models out there have that feature besides the R3? In regards to you comment about lenses, now that Canon has opened up their APSC to third party companies, I hope that means their optics division is focused (no pun intended) on rolling out more lenses soon. On the opposite side of the spectrum, the RF mount turns six years old in 2024 and we still don't have an L prime wider than 50mm. That's insane.

Honestly really love how far Canon have come the past few years. I prefer them over Nikon and Sony but I’ve held off because I really need that feature in a high megapixel body. The 85 1.2 is the stuff that dreams are made of. Getting my hands on that would be the pinnacle of my shooting experience. Nikon's 85 is very good. There is a small handful of photographers that I look at when I'm shopping for lenses. You shooting Gabby with the nifty fifty almost made me pull the trigger on an R50. Good glass makes amateurs like me look like Pro's. Canon has got it covered in spades. The question is, do I drop 3k on a lens to becomes a better photographer or am I just appeasing my ego. If I spent more time understanding lighting and shooting cheap lenses, I would probably improve my abilities. Then you throw Sigma and Tamaron into the mix and open up the rabbit hole. Canon's move to allow after market lenses in full frame is inevitable if that want to hang with the others.

For travel and kids, I'd be perfectly happy with the combination of the RF24-105 f4 IS and the RF35mm f1.8 IS. I went to Italy with my family and those were the only two lenses I used. I made a video review of each lens, if you want to check that out. If you have to have IBIS, your choices are the R7 and the R6MK II. All other cameras with IBIS will be beyond your budget.

I love Canon system with RF Canon lenses, they are awesome, no need for any third party lens. It is expensive yes, but it pays off if you do professional work. RF lenses are just awesome and are top of the line investment for pro photographers. When I was starting 15 years ago, yes I had been using many third party lenses cause they were cheaper, but never better. It took 10 years to make a great collection of Canon lenses in my bag but now I have all that I need. They make me happy.

My argument for third party lenses is the slow pace in which Canon is rolling out native lenses. The RF mount turns 6 years old in 2024 and the widest prime L lens they have is the 50mm rf/1.2, which is ironically the very first L prime lens they made. That is insane. No 35? 28? 24? 14?

3rd party FF lenses. They're just driving ppl away. Seriously I can spend 2k on a lens or 600$ for 3rd party that is 90% as good. Love canon but......yeah. Also the ergonomics are GREAT for work. But....not fun. It's like a minivan. Not stylish or cool but gets the job done. I literally got a Nikon Zfc for my fun camera lol. Thinking of getting a used Fuji too. @@KevinDealyeah, BUT- there's no chrome/black option, and I think the colours are just stupid looking. (And it's heeeeeavy for my tiny woman t rex arms) I'm shallow with the looks of my fun camera what can I say lol.😂

@@ladyethyme nothing wrong with having an aesthetic preference. I like my cameras looking boring and black because my wife can't tell them apart when I buy a new one. lol

There is one reason I will not buy a Canon RF camera (after using Canon professionally since 2004). The damn side hinged rear screen. Every one of their cameras has this awful screen, they can’t even be bothered to give us a choice, it’s their way or nothing. It’s too slow, conspicuous and obtrusive and only pacifies the vloggers. Sick of it, sort your sh*t out Canon.

I have both types of screens (my other system is Fuji). I prefer the flip screen that Canon has. So it's not one size fits all. There are some shots I do low to the ground vertically during my portrait sessions that only a flip screen can achieve. Clearly it's a dealbreaker for you and you gotta do what you gotta do. Thanks for watching!

Hi Kevin, I appreciate your channel very much & agree with your recent overview on Canon & Fuji systems. I shot Canon for nearly 40 years but switched to Fuji several years ago. The cost of the new RF lenses became cost prohibitive for me, although their “L” lenses are some of the best in the industry. I am a “ retired” photographer so I mostly photograph what interests me as opposed to shooting for clients. Canon served me well for many years but I am now heavily invested in Fuji glass, & I have not been disappointed. Now if Fuji can get their autofocus on par with the other major camera manufactures, I would be very satisfied.Best wishes for your channel & photo/ video endeavours.

I wish Canon had over and inner exposure warnings like Olympus. It's sooooooooo easy!

Breathe, dude, breathe. I’m with you-much prefer the tilt screen on the old M5 to these flippy things on the R bodies, but that’s not enough to stop me from loving all the awesomeness that is the R system.

Canon want to keep monopoly without lens. Customers to suffer.
