Its important to note that 4-5 decibels is actually substantially quieter as with every 10 decibels comes a perceived doubling of loudness. The logarithmic nature of decibel measurement can be tricky. Also, the frequency/type of sound is something to consider. The sound of wind could be the same volume as crinkling a bag of potato chips, however the sound itself is less bothersome to most.

Agreed - their video show time recording, FFT's... I wonder if they did sound quality analysis as well like Sharpness etc.... I think maybe not LOL.... In reality they likely just add surface treatment to the material damping its buckling behavior acting like a LPF also.. fun problems to solve!
Side note about thermal camera test... cool idea but definitely not accurate. heck it tells you next to nothing. BUT there is a simple fix you can do for the next video to make it really useful! Therma camera don't really measure temperature, they measure IR output, which is dependent on a materials emissivity (or that's how I understand it, someone please chime in and correct me if i'm wrong). For future videos, to ensure your comparing apples to apples, put some electrical tape on both the pads in the areas you are interested in. This will keep the emissivity values between both pads the same (in the areas with tape) so you can actually make a real comparison that is representative of the thermal bridging between the top of the pad and the floor. It's not a perfect setup, but way more insightful then just pointing the camera at two different pads with potential different material/surface finish properties spoofs the thermal camera into reading different temperature values.
@photog1529
Жыл бұрын
That's correct...different materials have different emissivity values. With any thermal device, it needs to have the ability for the user to set the correct, or most accurate, emissivity value for the material or object. Generally, you could get away with simply setting the device's emissivity to 0.98 or so and just apply some black gaffer's tape to the target.

Combined with the fact that R value is likely measuring thermal resistivity so the best test would to be to time how long it takes to get to these temps, assuming they’re accurate. The slower the higher the r value.

I would add that you may consider locking the temperature color rendition so that the brightness and colors will be consistent between tests. This will show pad to pad in relation to a baseline color "temperature" image. Most thermal cameras have the ability to lock the sensitivity.

Completely agree. When I first lifted an lite at REI I instantly knew I couldn’t sleep on it because it was so loud. The new one came out and I picked it up and instantly could tell the difference as it sooooo much quieter. Laid on it, rolled around and realized I could sleep on it. The extra half in is nice compared to the NEMO Tensor for when the air condenses a bit at night and you sink down a bit. I have yet to feel the ground pull heat on it as I did with the Tensor.

So cool they you did your own volume tests
Mats with transverse tubing will tend to convect away more heat than longitudinal tubing. This doesn't show up in the testing methods. Convective heat transfer occurs in the opposite direction to gravity, and definitely not from cold ground up to the warm sleeper. However, when lying on and compressing a sleeping mat, the base of the warm sleeper is lower than the edge of the mat, and for mats with transverse tubing, convective heat loss is significant due to the short distances involved. This is much less of a problem in mats with longitudinal tubing, the distances involved being much greater. Neither Exped or Thermarest have picked up on this.
You know the decibel scale is a logarithmic scale right? A 3 decibel decrease means halving the energy levels of the sound. Therefore a reduction of 4 to 5 decibels is still quite substantial.

I have several thermarest bags and quilts, and I love them. I have 1 thermarest pad, and I have not spent one night on it. As soon as I took it out of the stuff sac, I put it back in and got a MEC vectair. Best mat yet.
The only add I haven’t skipped in years. Great job!
I had a Thermarest Neoair and it was a bit noisy, but it didn’t bother me. For snow adventures I just added a z-lite pad under it and it was warm enough for me.
Great video! I’m curious that you said Dan Durston only sells four tents. There are six tents: the regular X-Mids, the X-Mid Pros, and the X-Mid Solids, all in 1P and 2P. The solid is meant for colder weather because a large amount of the inner mesh tent is replaced by fabric. Peace!
A man goes to his psychiatrist and says “I'm going crazy, doc. Sometimes I think I’m a yurt and sometimes I'm convinced I'm a tipi”. The doctor says “Relax, you’re two tents”.
I am really looking forward to your Exos Pro review.
Theory about the Big Agnes Zoom Pad. The ASTM test measures R value between two static surfaces, but in reality, people roll about at night. It might be that less internal baffling in the Zoom beans that air shifts easier about causing convection cooling that robs you of heat.
Hey there, Just found your channel and have enjoyed your videos. Do you have a video with inexpensive gear for us once a year group campers? Would love any recommendations to improve or replace my camping set up. Thank you
Decibels are on a logarithmic scale, so they work like this: a 3 decibel increase is a doubling in volume, and a 3 decibel decrease is a halving in volume. So 4-5 decibel decrease is actually a hell of a drop in volume.
Sound is on a dB scale, which is logarithmic. 2dB is about 63% quieter, so probably within the margin of error considering the differences in measurement. For reference, 3dB is twice a reference volume and -3dB is half. That being said, I would have rather seen them measure inside a tent to see what sounds reflect more back to the mic that resonate with that system.
Would love to see your continued testing of the zoom UL. I am looking at the rapide SL for its comfort and R-Value. If the zoom is good to go I’d rather get that and shed a few OZ!

I love my Ospey Exos Pro 55. Please compare to Gregory Focus with its superior compression strap system. I performed some permanent mods to my Exos Pro decoupling the compression straps from the hip belt and permanently routing under/inside stretchy side pockets...compression still functional but now I have full access and full expansion of side pockets even when cinching down the bottom compression straps. I can still put long items compressed in side pockets if I choose now all functioning equally well as Gregory Focal. Leaving compression straps attached to hipbelt is problematic and unnecessary. Load transfer works equally well without this attachment. I also detached upper compression straps from upper corners of the large stretchy front pocket moving over to a side loop so compression is still functional but now allowing full access to large front pocket even when under maximum compression. A few other mods were done with optional removable sleeping pad straps to bottom and top of the pack improving the overall design and making this pack perfect. The permanent mods actually reduced pack weight a few grams by use of slightly shorter compression strap lengths.
Really enjoyed the dad jokes on your moose jaw promo today XD

83% reduction is equal to 7.7dB reduction. An easy way to remember the conversion is that every 3dB is a factor of two and every 10dB is a factor of ten. dB's may seem confusing, but are a simple way to work with large numbers. Earthquakes are likewise in dB's (dB/10 to be precise). An 8.0 earthquake is a hundred-times as powerful as a 6.0. A quiet room might be 20dBA, while an Xlite might be 70dBA - 100,000-times more noisy? Thus, big numbers lose meaning, and dB's start to make sense.

Was the sound measurement decibells a power ratio or amplitude ratio measurement. They claim 6x less noisy, that translates to a 7,78 dB difference in power ratio, but 15,56 dB in amplitude ratio.

For the Zoom, it's probably the same problem the etherlight has, The air inside the pad is allowed to move, from bottom to top. That means that the cooler air at the bottom will mix with the warmer air at the top, every time you move. That doesn't show up in these kinds of tests, or test environments where the dummy doesn't move, so the Etherlight is also rated way to high.

NU25... I think the important upgrade is the USB-C port not the strap. I don't use those regular straps anyway and replace them with the shock cord. I even went back to the original strap once to see and I could not stand it. Its so odd I was thinking about getting the new NU25 and decided against it because I liked my original one so much. Then I misplaced or lost it so I had to get a new one anyway. If the original version had a USB-C port I would have went with that.

Totally agree with your gripes. I am a huge fan of the Exos because of the trampoline back and side pockets. I've owned 3 different versions of the pack. Last year when they reintroduced the hip belt pockets, I quickly purchased the latest version... only to be disappointed. In addition to your gripes on the Pro (which looks like last year's Exos design except with lighter material), I will add that the zippers on the hip belt pockets are very difficult to open and close even with 2 hands. Furthermore, the flap jacket is the size of a jock strap, which allows water to pool and migrate into the pack, forcing me to keep the brain and accepting the weight penalty. In true Osprey style: one step forward... two steps back. They need to add a thru-hiker to their design team!

Grabbed the Exos Pro 55 but worried it's a bit too light for my taste. Mostly worried the hipbelt/padding will become an issue midtrip. TBF this is compared to my current AG 65 so totally justifiable considering the weight savings but the 30lb comfort rating is also a concern as I would need to really optimize my load to hit that mark. Been looking at the new Atmos LT 65 as an at least lighter weight option. Sturdier materials for seemingly better pack longevity and cuts all the frills I don't use on my AG 65 anyway. Seems the LT 65 isn't getting much attention yet though, hard to find anything beyond Osprey's own videos and the section hiker review.

For all the people posting about decibels and such, you’re not wrong per se, but you might want to read this: “Perception Sound studies tell us time and again that a 3dBA increase in sound level is barely noticeable to the human ear. In fact, you have to raise a sound level by 5dBA before most listeners report a noticeable or significant change. Further, it takes a 10dBA increase before the average listener hears “double the sound.” That’s a far cry from 3dB.” (3dB is a literal doubling of sound energy) Yeah, so thermarest pulled the ol’ “blinded by science” trick. Even if he measures 5dBA decrease, (the 83% ish they claim) it will only be perceived as a bit quieter. Keep in mind the human ear has a dynamic range of about one TRILLION to one, so any sound at all will be registered just fine. It would have to be hugely quieter to really FEEL quieter.
