    My thoughts as a total novice on getting into spraying. I decided to get into spraying and purchased the excellent Graco GX21. Has it been plain sailing? No! My sprayer arrived complete with a 15M hose, that's got to be a good thing because it's huge, right? Well, not really. One of my first jobs was a two bedroom apartment but it was small. Having a huge hose caused problems, although they were problems of my own making. I would spray a room and start at the wrong end so I ended up smudging the paint with the bloody hose. My fault of course but it wasn't something I considered until I messed up. Get a shorter hose and a whip, you will not regret it. Oh, get a hopper. It's worth it just for how easy it makes cleaning the GX21. If you're asked to quote for a job go over it with a fine tooth comb, don't consider quoting if the plastering hasn't been completed. I've recently completed a job where the plasterer had a left a build-up of plaster on every skirting board and door frame. Trust me, it's a swine to remove by hand and very time consuming. This will sound stupid to many people but consider masking your lovely, expensive sprayer. I didn't and it's now white and looks crap. Two minutes of masking keeps it looking like new. On the subject of masking, when you first start you will probably be slow and even struggle to cut masking film with your hand masker. Stick with it, you will get faster with experience and one day be as quick as Pete! Finally, watch Paint HQs videos, literally everything that I know is due to Pete's fantastic tutorials.

    Excellent video, and thank you for showing the comparison between the two guns. You've earned a like and a new subscriber:) Question: spraying primer on doors and trying to reduce overspray. Using a black Graco 4-13 still getting tails at 2500. My 5-15 seems like overkill for doors. My FFLP 3-08 is good for finish, but the primer is my problem. Do you have a suggestion?

  • @PaintHQ

    @PaintHQ

    Жыл бұрын

    Thank you so much for the kind words and support.. regarding spraying primer, your thought process to get the balance of atomisation / pressure / fluid flow is spot on.. you’ll see in a lot of my videos I’m a fan of FF LP .008 tips, which works awesome for the low viscosity waterborne / spray only primer / topcoat that I’m a fan of.. I spray a high build that still atomises awesome through a 208 / 308.. so your primer is much thicker is it? Vs your topcoat ..if you’re still getting tails with a black 413 (TrueAirless) at 2500, you’re right to think the tip orifice size needs to be upped.. if you have a 515 to test on paper (not on the doors), it will give you an idea on orifice size to see if tails are eliminated.. if so, you could stick to a .015 size or try a .014 (very similar).. if you’ve got the RAC X tip guard, I’d go with an FF LP ..Or go back to the 413 and thin the material.. again test a bit so you’re not wasting your precious paint.. I don’t like to thin trim paints but it could be worth it, 10% max, with this primer.. if waterborne, you could use warm water / and warm your paint.. all helps the flow 😆 Sorry I don’t have a definitive answer, but credit to you, you’re thinking very wisely.. it’s just getting the balance right, and spraying at the lowest possible pressure to minimise overspray.. Keep in touch, great to have your input on the channel.. happy to help if I can.. regards Pete

    Pete, perfect videos & sound blend (as always)! Please use gloves with Elbow Grease. Just as you always use a face mask, you should look after your hands too! Elbow Grease (which you have recommended to me earlier) is a strong degreasant that does no favours to your skin. Having tried Elbow Grease, I've switched to Non-Nonsense degreaser 5L from Screwfix. It works better but does need a spray bottle...

    It's certainly nice to watch a real professional paint. I am a retired DYI guy that mostly paints interior and exterior trim and baseboard (Acrylic Enamel) with a Graco Magnum X5 airless. while the X5 gun is OK, I never liked the RAC IV spray tip selection. Is it possible or even plausible to use the Graco Contractor PC Compact gun on my Magnum X5? I would like to use the LP FF tips; however the RAC IV does not seem to offer those sizes. Thank You

    Hi Mark.. that’s very kind of you to say - it’s great to hear from someone with a wonderful enthusiasm to spray projects into retirement 💙 I’ve just looked up the X5, the gun / tip guard thread is a standard 7/8”, so it is possible to swap out to a RAC X tip guard and tips (I believe the X5 max tip size is .015”).. also the hose connection is a standard NPSM 1/4”, so yes a swap out to a contractor gun is also possible 👍 ..Hope this helps, please keep in touch it will be great to hear how you get on.. regards Pete 💙💯

    That Graco compact looks like a good gun. I've been using a Silver Plus gun for a few years (nice gun), but recently I found a gun by ARO on eBay for $25. I'd never heard of these guns but it's the best gun (by far) that I've ever used. The pressure is butter smooth and it has the lowest pull pressure of any gun I've ever used. The trigger lock is in the back where it should be. The downside is these guns cost $800-$1K dollars and that's probably why we don't see these guns used much. If you come across one for dirt cheap pick one up. You'll be glad you did.

    Nice to see you running the woodwork-> walls -> ceiling approach. There’s always an element of discussion on what is the order to spray. Ceilings, woodwork then brush and roll walls is another favoured approach but then I’m putting my sprayer away too early!! How are you dealing with spitting out of the extension without a clean shot. Is that simply technique. Triggering just off the surface? Cheers

  • @PaintHQ

    @PaintHQ

    Thanks for your feedback, appreciate your input.. yeah my favourite is all sprayed, like you I enjoy the spraying process and the finish and sharp masked lines are mind blowing.. I can appreciate the reasons for a roller / back roller finish.. on all my jobs the minimum is spray is woodwork and ceiling.. a possibility for me is to spray woodwork, then mask and brush / roll up onto the ceiling (no cutting in), then on the last day mask the cut line and spray the ceiling.. you may not save a day labour, but it’s less labour intensive on the body, each step is quicker, the finish is flawless and yeah the ceiling cut line is razor sharp.. a HSL is a good example of spraying, masking the ceiling cut line is easier to navigate than manoeuvring a ladder, going up and down.. on this job I didn’t use a ladder I could spray off the landing up onto the ceiling, and I could reach and push the masking round (if that makes sense).. then all the masking pulls down from the ground at the end, it’s very satisfying 😆 ..you’re right I trigger off / on, hitting the masking 👍 ..although I find the small 25cm / 10” extension doesn’t produce much / if any noticeable spit 😆 ..I do sometimes use a Cleanshot 💙 ..really appreciate your input and contribution on PaintHQ buddy.. regards Pete

    That’s a very good question and a very good idea.. I’m pretty certain that they don’t - thinking bout it, there is a difference in the ‘trigger assembly’ because the PC cartridge has a different part numbers for the compact Vs regular contractor PC.. plus the trigger and guard has it’s differences.. it is a good idea though 👏👏👏 on the note of the ‘problematic’ swivel / pinching your skin ..I believe it’s a ‘known issue’ (in some cases) and a modification is planned for future releases 👍💙💯 all the best my friend.. keep in touch.. regards Pete

    I do rate a conventional airspray / HVLP setup.. you’re not limited to the air and the passive setup when using a remote pot.. unless you add a compressor to a turbine setup or go for the Graco 9.5 ProComp, .. that would be my choice of a turbine, but I can appreciate the cost and investment.. with a compressor setup, it’s not as portable as turbine, but you can run a long airline and have the compressor in another room.. so a turbine is portable but the airline is thicker and not as flexible (if spraying uPVC for example and maybe working off a ladder).. I’d rule out the XVLP, that’s by no means a slur on Wagner, I wouldn’t do that.. it’s just not in the same league as a compressor airspray / turbine HVLP .. one more thing on a compressor, if you already have airless.. you could take another step in future to Air Assisted Airless 👍😆 The upcoming Graco QuickShot, firstly is a professional airless unit that’s extremely portable.. I was fortunate to field test in the UK, and being released I’m super excited what this unit can deliver and I can’t wait to showcase why I believe it’s a cordless unit worth investing in Have a chat to my friend Mike at SpraymanUK, he’s a great guy, super knowledgeable and won’t pressure you to make a purchase.. mention me (Pete) and he’ll steer you right 👍 Keep in touch, I’d love to hear what you decide and I’m more than happy to help and advise more if I can.. regards Pete 💙

    Hey Rob, great to hear from you.. yeah I’m doing great, hope you are too my friend.. very good point, it’s a reason I switched to Johnstones, along with Brewers being my local trade store and I rate the colour matches.. I’ve also been a fan of Albany Durable Matt, but I do prefer Johnstones being an acrylic.. basically I’ll thin Johnstones 10% with warm water, it really helps ease the flow, especially with it being a very thick emulsion, so you get 5.5 litres out of a 5 litre can 😆 (Tikkurila being 3 litre / 2.7 litre ☹️).. performance, scrub rating and matt finish is excellent, up there with Optiva in my opinion.. plus both companies are owned by PPG, and I’ve seen the odd Tikkurila exterior product appear to cross over to Johnstones.. as for price, you’re right Johnstones can be very cost effective.. especially if you have a word with your Brewers account manager (if a Brewers is local to you).. Optiva Primer (acrylic) for fresh plaster is cost effective, otherwise I mix a Johnstones acrylic durable matt 30% for a mist coat 👍 Hope this helps.. thanks for the kind words of support 🙏 Keep in touch.. regards Pete

    @@PaintHQ Hi Pete, many thanks for taking the time to give such a detailed reply. Your reassurance is very helpful as I’m always nervous of suggesting a new product to a client. Using warm water is also something I’d not considered. I might be fortunate in also having a local Johnstone’s store in addition to Brewers! Once again, many thanks and best wishes, Rob

    You’re very welcome Rob, anytime my friend 🙏 ..Another thing I do, if the client wants to pick a colour off the F&B chart.. i’ll explain what I’m doing, and get the tester mixed at Brewers in Johnstones (not the F&B tester pot).. they’ll mix a 500ml of Johnstones Cova Plus, it’s around £5.. that way customer is able to see exactly the colour 👍

    @@PaintHQ Many thanks Pete, are you just using the Cova Plus for the tester? Meaning, once the client is happy then you would get the Acrylic Durable Matt tinted to the same colour? Thanks and best wishes, Rob

    Yes my friend.. at Brewers when you ask for a Johnstones tester it defaults to Cova Plus, so you get the colour but not the sheen 👍 ..let me know how you get on buddy 👍🙏

    Hi Pete how do you rate the graco LP tips against the HEA tips cheers

    Hey John, that’s a very good question.. what I find is the HEA tips can be a much courser atomisation Vs Graco LP tips, that atomise very fine, producing a softer edge to the fan.. I’m sure there’s an engineering explanation for how the material is broken up under pressure.. certainly all paints behave differently, going on their pigmentation and quality.. I find it all very interesting 💙 ..great to hear from you again, hope you’re keeping well my friend.. regards Pete

    @PaintHQ thanks Pete I have just got a 440 impact very happy with it I use HEA tips all the time only because I have been using a wagner 250r that only has a top end of 1500psi but now I can try different tips and see the difference between them thanks for your reply mate cheers

    Ah I see.. what size tips do you typically use?.. I’m confident you’ll be impressed with Graco tips, the low pressure achieved in fine finish spraying (FF LP), has been up to 50% less in some of the tests I’ve carried out.. you’ll need a 7/8” Graco RAC X tip guard.. I have spares, never been used, I’d gladly pop one in the post for free if you wanted to email me your address.. painthq.mail@gmail.com Regards Pete 💙

    @PaintHQ I've used the FFLP tips and they are spot on my little pump had enough pressure for them but not the LP tips I typically use a 5:17 hea for walls and a 210 FFLP for woodwork cheers mate

    They spit a few droplets of paint when you press the trigger. I haven’t found a way to fix that. Definitely not the right tool for fine finish.

    If you’re getting a spit when triggering on (Vs triggering off), it could be the gun packings / or cartridge swapping out of its the Contractor PC .. Or the gasket / seal needs checking in the tip guard (should be the smaller orifice gasket if using LP / FFLP tips ..if it’s the bigger orifice gasket that’s used with PAA tips, that could cause a spit like you describe.. hope this makes sense my friend 😆 ..regards Pete 🙏

    Hey David, it’s design as to how two fingers wrap around the swivel / hose, plus a 1/8” whip makes for a very flexible setup 👏👏👏 ..thanks for your input, always a pleasure to hear from you 🙏 ..regards Pete

    Oh dear, sorry to hear you’ve experienced that.. no I can’t say I’ve had that problem.. if you ever get chance to ‘handle’ any of the Graco PC guns, I think you’ll be impressed, especially the amount of time you spend spraying.. the ProConnect gun cartridge swap out is a great time saving feature to keep you spraying too 👍
