    Great video as always! Another useful accessory I've found to get lenses to focus closer is an adapter with a focussing helicoid. When collapsed they act as a normal adapter and you can focus to infinity but when extended it acts as a variable extension tube allowing you to get much closer to subjects. The one I use is an M42 to FX made by Pixco.

    Great one, thanks. I love the Zuiko 50/3.5 macro - it might be my overall favourite lens, and it's the one that's most often attached to my Sony A7. As you say, it's excellent for general shooting too - so if I go out around parks etc to look for macro shots, I'll often take just the one lens. Also, it's easily sharp enough to get very nice 1:1 results on micro 4/3rds.

    After watching this video I was lucky to find the Pentax 50mm f4 Macro. It was being sold "as is" for parts or repair for $20.00. Shipping took the price closer to $30. When it arrived, I took pictures with it right away with decent results. However, it did need cleaning and the focus ring was very hard to move due to the old grease being so hard. After lots of cleaning and regreasing it works much better but remains a bit stiffer than my other lenses. The only other issue I ran into was the inner cone kept unscrewing when I was removing lens filters. A very small amount of tread locker has corrected this. This lens was quite a challenge for me, maybe because it was one of my first repairs. Looking back, I am glad I gambled on this one. It really paid off as it is wonderful and one of my favorite vintage lens. Thanks for all your wonderful videos.

    Another excellent and interesting video. I own a Zuiko 50mm f3.5 macro lens. I am using it more and more as my go-to standard lens on my Olympus OM camera bodies. I only use my 1.8 and 1.4 standard lenses in lower light conditions. The fact that the front element of the macro lens is set so far into the lens body means I don't need to use a lens hood - and this is always a bonus.

    Hello Zenography. It’s always a pleasure to watch your very well informing videos. I detected 2 years ago the world of Hasselblad, Rolleiflex and my camera from the seventies, the Canon AE1. Shooting filmrolls again and hiding my digital camera in the cupboard. You would be a great storyteller, perhaps a BBC journalist telling the world not to hurry but to take time for composing, measuring, enjoying, all the things life offers. And as I read the many comments, I’m not the only one who has this opinion. I hope for you every day creates a smile on your face, like we just feel while watching your efforts. I can confirm that this lens is unbelievable. I have 30+ lenses and this Olympus might be the sharpest lens of all. The micro-contrast is a dream. The handling is perfect. But what is shocking me, is the color rendition. The colors are just obscene. I have no other lens which can compete with these colors. Thank you very much for guiding me into this direction. Btw. Nice video! I still have to try the takumar macro, and one day the Jena Pancolar (I already have several lenses in that range, the Pancolar would be just for aesthetic taste :) ). . Among similar manual lenses, the Minolta MC 50 f3.5 and Micro Nikkor 55 f3.5 (or 2.8) are sharper at full aperture than the Olympus or Pentax. They are also sharper than the very very expensive Leica Elmarit 60 f3.5. Only modern stuff - like the laowa 60 2:1 - is sharper than the nikkor 55 at full aperture (even lenses like the nikon 105VR is not as sharp as the 55 at f2.8. The modern Sony 90 macro (or Nikkor Z macro lenses) is a hair above the lovely 55 nikkor). Obviously speaking from a macro nerd's perspective, these are all excellent lenses for a more general photographer who wants a good occasional macro. . Good options are also the Vivitar 55 f2.8 (it goes up to 1:1), the Mamiya/Yashinon 60 f3.5 and the Canon FD 50 f3.5 macro (all of them with practically the same optical design, 5 or 6 elements in | 4 groups)

    Hi, I love the Zuiko 50mm f/3,5. It is pretty much a permanent fixture on my Sony-a6000. A close focusing lens with a 75mm equivalent FoV is very close to ideal for me. I don't have the Takumar 50mm f/4 but I do have the lovely Takumar 100mm macro which is also f/4. Doubling the focal length is really handy when approaching some of our tiny but deadly Aussie critters. A point of correction; I think you will find that the forward scale on your Takumar does not indicate distance. (20cm or 0.2m) It indicates the reproduction ratio of the lens at a particular distance setting. In this case 1:2 or half life size. My 100mm f/4 Takumar has the same arrangement & magnification ratio. Another macro arrangement you may be interested in is the helicoid adapters coming out of China. I have them in OM, M42 & Nikon-F to NEX mounts. My Nikon version is of particular interest; it allows standard 50mm lenses to get down to 0.5x magnification & my Micro Nikkor 55mm f/3,5 gets pretty close to life size. The real bonus is a second adjustment ring which stops the lens down to the set aperture. Effectively turning the combination into a preselect mechanism which I find ideal on mirrorless cameras; no click counting! ;-)

Set a price in my head and never go over it as you will find what you want one day. I usually have bids going most days and enjoy the thrill of the hunt . The 2 you pointed to does not represent the focusing distance; it means 1:2 magnification ratio, or half life-size on the film. The 3 means 1:3, i.e. 1/3 life-size, the 10 means 1:10, i.e. 1/10 life size etc.

Got mine in mint condition, so it looks almost like a brand new lens. Paid the equivalent of about 100 pound for it, as well. Like the Olympus, it focuses down to 23cm, which is nice and close. Now that I've also got a new batch of chems to process my films, I'll be able to go and get some more insect macros, but I hope the weather changes a bit as it's been a bit too windy for shooting macros lately!!.

    Thanks again for a very informative video. Ok so this morning I was quite sad. I received a lens in the post. One a MD - PQ adapter for my Pentax q camera. And attached my Minolta tele rokkor qd 135 lenses. But after attaching the focus is far too zoomed, completely different from what had been showcased by others using the same lens. Of course, I am an amateur digital camera user so quite likely a user error. I'm guessing as I flipped the lens around and provided me with the product/still life photography I'm trying to achieve and then I came across this video of yours. So here is my question: is there any recommendations for a decent lens I can use in the £30-40 price range that doesn't require to be reversed to get a good quality product photography. Also the adapter that I would need to use on my Pentax q Thanks so much. Will be heading over the Patreon page also, with such quality content and the most amazing speaking voice.

    Hi there, glad you're enjoying the videos! Your Pentax Q has a very small sensor, so if you fit lenses designed for 35mm film (same size as a 'full frame' sensor), the effective focal length of that lens will be much increased. This would account for the 'zooming in' effect you describe. Are you particularly looking for a macro lens? If so, you're in luck. Just as the effective focal length of a given lens will effectively increase on your camera, the effective minimum focus distance will effectively decrease, so a lens with, say, a 50cm MFD on full frame will be FAR nearer on the Q, probably nearer 10cm or so! So pretty much any good quality 50mm lens will do the job for you - I would suggest the Pentax auto takumar 50mm f1.8 or f2, the Olympus Zuiko 50mm f1.8, or any other good quality 50mm from an SLR camera. I hope that helps!

    Excellent review once again in a real world scenario, no unnecessary technowaffle. At the risk of being classed as a heretic, would you consider reviewing the Zuiko 35-70mm f3.5 or f4, and the Zuiko 75-150mm f4? I recently bought these for my OM2N, as they are very good value. I have been more than happy with the results so far. The 35-70mm is a great 'street' lens. Most are f4 so not particularly fast, but great in daylight. The 75-150mm is likewise great for portraiture and general use. I know that primes are always better, but I belive that in real world usage, these lenses are somewhat neglected and don't get the recognition they deserve. The actual images I got are great, and the cost of both online was £55 for two Zuiko lenses.

  • @zenography7923

    @zenography7923

    Primes are certainly said to always be better, but zooms can make some fantastic images, so what does 'better' really mean in this context? I used to have the Zuiko 35-70 and I really liked it - so much so that I now wish I'd kept it!

    @@zenography7923 Precisely my point, they're great lenses. It comes back to the real world scenario, and forgetting the obsession with ultimate sharpness, bokeh, etc etc. We're apt to lose sight of the goal which is getting good pictures. The 35-70mm f3.5 is now my default lens for general photography, especially street photography. In reasonable lighting at f5.6 - f8 it's more than good enough. Zuiko quality will out. Hopefully you'll be able to review a few of them at some time. Keep up the good work, photography is a great passion and consolation, especially in these strange days.

    I don't have any real vintage macro lenses, but I do have the 50mm and 100mm Minolta macro lenses, both f2.8 and use them on my A99. Although they are AF and 80s built, I consider them "middle aged", unlike myself! I agree that manual focussing and a tripod are a must when doing really close up work. The 100mm also makes a great portrait lens, as it is so sharp in the middle. Together they cost just over £200, so still a bargain in my eyes. Must try out the reversing ring(s) on some of my real vintage lenses though.

    The 2 is a reciprocal measure of the magnification. It doesn’t mean 20cm it means “1/2” or the image on the sensor is half the size of the object being photographed. The magnification scale can be used to make repeatable levels of magnification especially if your lens suffers from focus breathing. A slider can be used to get critical focus at set magnification and with reversing ring shots by moving the film plane backwards and forwards.
