    Exactly why I chose the Iridium over the Ir-200. As it ships, there are only 9 amp/cab combinations (I'm already addicted to the AC30 open back). It doesn't take long to find a favorite and get to jamming.

    Good idea. I have the Two Notes Le-Clean (Fender, Mesa) tube preamp, Joyo AceTone pedal (Vox) and EHX English Muffn' (Marshall) valve pedal with the Two Notes Torpedo C.A.B and power amp with speakers. Also loads of pedals. It's very flexible, you can go straight into your audio interface or a PA too.

    I’d love 2 of these with my Humboldt Simplifier, which I prefer to the Iridium, but I know plenty of people who prefer the iridium. Either way, the Headrush Speakers sound like a great solution for a highly portable stereo rig that you can still send a stereo signal to the foh PA.

    I've got the iridium on my pedalboard going out to my mixer, going out to my monitor speakers. I also got a bunch of synthesizers and a sampler hooked up to the mixer. Everything is synced up with midi. I can loop the guitar in time and mix the signal in with the other signals and I can record in my mixer with one click. Really nice workflow to make entire songs and record even without a computer.

    Love the Iridium, too, it sounds so great and natural. Actually it‘s even a stereo amp, so you can run a stereo Volante into the breakup amp sounds and run fully stereo with the delays. Or plug it afterwards, if you like this more. Sounds incredible. The foot switch allows for 4 presets and the dialed in sound, so it‘s really flexible.

  • @dougc84

    @Soy Orbison The point of FRFR speakers, as opposed to any ol' PA speaker, is that they're designed to have as flat of a response curve as possible. This is necessary because colored speakers (those without a flat response curve) may *sound* good, but don't translate well to, say, a studio recording setting. PA speakers have come a long way, and many of them (but not all of them) do have a relatively flat response vs. the speakers of old that would be too bassy or too shrill. The Headrush and the Friedman variants are, indeed, both rebranded PA speakers, because they do a really great job at a really great price point, but they do impart some very minor (but acceptable) tonal colorization. The Yamaha DxR speakers are much the same, and were the preferred "alternative" speakers when the Kemper was first on the scene for, again, their price and flat response curve.

    The Fender sound was very good, but compared to a hot AC30, the high end gain sounded weak compared to what I am used to. My rig is a Fender Dual reverb and a Vox AC30, so I was a little disappointed in the Vox sound. The Fender sound was very close. Also, the mic’ed sound and the DI sound was so close it was incredible. Thanks for reviewing these products. Great job.

Question: I just bought an iridium, and walrus to see what I like best with the 12 inch headrush speaker cab, have you tried the 12 vs the 8 inch to see which one sounds better, or do you flat out think the 8 is more than sufficient despite the smaller speaker?

    I didn't realize how cheap the Headrush cab is. I have a Positive Grid Bias Mini and it looks like I could run its line-out into the inputs of this cab. I've been looking at standard 1x12 cabinets to plug the Bias Mini into, but such a cabinet is very pricey and bulky and I like the idea of having a smaller cab that will allow me to use the Bias Mini away from the PC. This might be what I need...unfortunately it doesn't have stereo outputs. That Iridium is very advanced for you get for $400...kinda blows away the Bias Mini, if you want stereo.

    HeadRush FRFR + PodGo would cost about the same and is your whole rig. Has IR loader, and a pile of great amp models. All of these modellers sound good to me except that I don't like the fuzz sounds of any of the modellers. Give me a real flabby 2x12 cab with a fuzz pedal any day over any model I've heard. But ooh boy the modellers are good at everything else. Even "tube warmth", I'm fooled. I have to give the Iridium a bit of an edge on its cab/mic models versus my PodGo. Given what I get for the money I would buy a PodGo and a pair of Headrushes if I was starting from zero. Not just for the stereo. There's something to be said for filling a room from two different sound sources. A lot of what you get from the feeling of a big amp in a room is the way it feels powerful and you respond to it as a player. A pair of FRFRs can get the same psychoacoustic experience, or very close, without annoying the spousal unit.

So really, you could pick something a bit better (Alto's good for their price point, but still pretty mediocre) and get better results. Of course a nicer PA speaker is going to push you over the $650 mark.

    Too much hype for the Headrush imo, in the bass department it is boomy and the treble area can sound harsh sometimes. The Yamaha DBR10 stage box is a by far a much better (more balanced sounding) speaker than the headrush, even when Yamaha is not issueing its box a "FRFR" label. The headrush speaker is not a flat speaker, that is for sure. This is marketing speak bullshit. Even my Edifier Luna E25 HD speakers for PC use are flatter than this Headrush, ok they don't deliver the power you would need on stage or for practicing in the rehearsal space, but they have a flatter frequency response and for home use they sound much better than the headrush speaker in conjuction with an amp-/cabsim. If you need a battery powered speaker for amp sim, you could also have a look at the Bose S1 pro, I am not kidding here!!! Bill. I like your calm style, but I have to disagree in regards to the headrush. The market has much better options for us than this Headrush stuff. If you're in the market for a flat sounding speaker for your amp/cab simulator, go to a store and try many out. YOu will hear that there are much better ones for modelers.

    Excellent video Bill! Thank you for this! Questions: When you had each of the outs from the strymon going to interface and into the FRFR, did you keep it in "mono" or "sum"? Did you plug straight out of Iridium into the FRFR speaker with a DI box of some sort? this vid is getting me to look into this headrush.

  • @dougc84

    @dougc84

    3 жыл бұрын

    The mono/sum switch is for the input, not the output. For the rig he was demoing with, there was no stereo input, so it doesn't matter. Yes, that means you can configure two completely separate IRs for each side and plug into whichever one you want. A DI box isn't necessary unless you have a noisy home studio space or you're running long lines to a mixer or interface, such as when playing at a venue or recording in a professional studio. You won't notice a difference in tone, only notice a difference in noise floor, and only if you're running long cables or are in a noisy place (around a lot of high voltage electrical stuff, dimmer switches, bad power, etc.).

I run a mono line out of my keyboard into one Input and my strymon iridium into the other input, and have been practicing like that. I have a gig this weekend and would like to give the one XLR output to the sound engineer. Do i have to worry about PHANTOM POWER harming the FRFR/ Iridium/keyboard????

  • @dougc84

    @dougc84

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@Mr_A_Mia Yes. I don't believe it needs phantom power, and any device that doesn't need it can be harmed by providing voltage. Like... your guitar would be a lot less fun if you plugged 12V into it. Just confirm with the mix engineer to turn it off (which any engineer worth two cents would have it off anyway). However, the better solution is to run a DI from your keys and a DI from your guitar to the house and have it monitored. This way, the engineer has control over the volume level of your guitar and your keys, vs. a mix that might sound good to you but is generally uncontrollable. In that case, you wouldn't really need the Headrush - just use the stage wedges or IEMs.
