Physical media exists mostly for elderly people who cant figure out streaming and they usually dont care that much if its a fancy player or not, So there isnt really a lot of room for a high end market anymore.

@@greg6500 ...or perhaps the "elderly people" as you put it, have already "worked it out" and already own an Oppo player (which would make this player totally irrelevant). Maybe the ignorance lies with people who stream and are unaware that buying a high end player will actually give them a much higher quality audio visual experience then they can get when streaming. That is of course assuming that you have no issues with your broadband service, Wi-Fi network or streaming service, who loses the licence for certain films, which then requires additional streaming services elsewhere. Probably the same people who will in 10 years time say they can't find the content they want to watch on any of the streaming services?👍🤣

I bought the UDP800 earlier this year and love it. My only regret is not waiting until this came out.

from what I looked up, unless you absolutely need the extra DAC support, the 800 seems to be just as capable as the 900 with the main difference being slightly less noise on the analog audio output and a better DAC (still an extremely good DAC on the 800). The 800 has the same storage, same XLR connectors, and only a slightly less capable DAC in which the 900 is ridiculously overkill for most people. Unless you have a real killer system with $20,000+ speakers and the high end supporting gear to boot with the best of the best receiver/processor and amp, I don't see much cost benefit of getting the 900 vs. the 800. These Magnitar players seem much closer together compared to the old Oppo players which did seem to have a huge improvement from the X03 to the X05.

Man that is the most amazing DVD player I have ever seen in my life. First of all it plays everything. Second of all, I love the size of it. I love it’s a big monster. And third of all, I love the physical appearance of how the front looks. With the four squares and them being different colors. I believe it’s worth every penny of the $3000, in fact, I’m going to get 3 of them.

Great video! We have the OPPO NON-UHD for all discs except 4K. A used Panny for 4K needs. It maybe years before either gives way. By then, 8k.

Question: when you were showing the butterfly, why would there be a difference if the output was digital over HDMI? It should just output the exact same signal, so why would there be a difference? Could it be that the inputs on your TV had different settings?

Love the CHannel, Question: What's the differents between say my Sony UBP-800, besides that it freezes sometimes.

I believe this Magnetar's are the Oppos resurrected with a different name brand and face lift. The resemblance of the unit and model names are so close. What really gave it away was the on screen menu. It is exactly as the Oppo menu with updated backgrounds. In my opinion it is a good thing, after Oppo departure it left a void in the UDP high end department. Most of those players from mayor brands are good but they are for the mass disregarding the small details like built quality and high end compinets used inside. Oppo was and now with a new name the best UDP player in the market. I just had my UDP203 serviced recently due to a power surge. But now it's running back like new. Great review by the way.

My only question is if I’m playing something that is 2.0-7.1 I want just the analog outs but for atoms I want the hdmi outs. Will it just automatically do it or is that more dependent on your receiver? I’m looking at Marantz units.

I never heard of the Magnetar brand. The player looks good; nice presentation. I can't justify buying one because my Pioneer Elites are still going strong and look and sound great. But if they were to go down, I know where I'd look first.

Hi, I found your video very interesting. I used the spears and munsil test disc and the associated Butterfly/petals scene on my Panasonic UB9000, I could see the same details as your test on the Magnetar. I found that particularly interesting because allegedly the Panasonic 820 by most accounts has the same video capability as it big brother, the 9000. Yet, the 820 on your set up didn't resolve that particular image as well as your Magnetar & my 9000. Perhaps there is a bit more picture improvement with the Panasonic UB9000 vs the Panasonic 820. Interesting in any case. In regards to upscaling 1080p bluray to 4k, I think all players struggle & tvs do it slightly better, but even they aren't perfect. I'm guessing the Magnetar & Panasonic 820 performance were about equal in that regard with the test disc ?

How does the UDP800 compares to the 900? There is any justification to buy a UHD player if most UHD movies are played from external HDD, on Sony A95L?

How can I hook up just audio to the avr then a second hdmi to the tv is there a setting on the tv or Blu-ray player to set up ? You have a link on how to ?

Might sound weird, but I like how the disc tray is in the middle. I have 2 Panasonic 4k players and both trays are on the left side of the player.

I don’t like that the tray doesn’t come out 100%, so you have to be careful when inserting or removing a disc, otherwise you might scratch them and damage them.

I've reached my Home Theater Zenith. I have my 7.2.6 with my UDP-820. I have 4k movies, but I don't watch as much as I stream due to ease of stream. I'm done spending 💰 on home theater equipment for the next yr. Great vid

Hi again. Does that Magnetar playback 4k 'SDR' content in true 10 bit. The Reavons, Pioneer LX500 only play it back in 8 bit. The Panasonic ub9000 that I own (& 820 I'm told) playback 4k sdr in true 10 bit. You can test this using the spears and munsil disc. I'm told all mediatech chipset players (which includes Sony & Magnetar too) only playback in 8 bit. Films such as 'Others', 'A Fistful of Dollars' and the two sequels from kino lorber, are 4k sdr discs too. As far as I know only the Panasonic players playback 4k sdr correctly in 10 bit. I'm curious about Magnetar. Thanks.

An excellent review. AU$5000 in Australia. I own the Pany UB9000, which doesn't have video source direct output, which my old Oppo 83 had. But it can switch audio via HDMI off. I recommend a good 48 GB HDMI cable to get the most out of SD, HD and 4K. 🔥

Thank you for the very well presented video, personally to my eyes the difference to the Panasonic is huge, if I saw the two side by side like this there is no way I could consider the cheap Panasonic, even if I had to save fir years I would have to own this. I’m looking because my Oppo 205 is developing a fault and really this is the only machine to consider replacing the Oppo as analogue audio is also important to me.

It does play .mkv files. Is it full quality (Dolby Atmos/Vision/HDR)? I can't say because I don't have any .mkv files on a hard drive.

Wonder if anyone has done a measured evaluation of using two HDMI outs from any player that gives an audio and video HDMI out ? I have an Oppo but have never tried due to inconvenience of two HDMI cables. Would love to know if video or audio or both are different from using one HDMI out to receiver. Can you actually see and hear a difference?

See a difference no, but if your specific player has something like a low clock jitter process which I believe the Oppo does, then then the audio will improve. Panasonic even recommends separating the HDMI in their user manual so I trust what they say

I have a Panny 420 and an Oppo 103 D plays everything I need. I have a projector so no need for Dolby vision and the hdr optimizer is a must have.

Projectors can play Dolby Vision so long as you have something like an HDFury Vertex or Zidoo box to decode the metadata and map it to your projector's capabilities.

My panny ub9000 has gone strokg for years. Not upgrading until that shits the bed

I used to buy into new brands or brands I hadn’t heard of if they released a good product, I can’t however justify spending 3k anymore on brands that I just don’t know I f they will be around tomorrow, I hate buying things that I love and wait for a next iteration and not only does it not come, but maybe even the whole company disappears, i personally have been gravitating towards Apple a lot, from IPhone to digital movies, yes I will not get lossless audio or video (yet) through streaming but I just have a sense of security with how large Apple is that they will not go under anytime soon, they also try to build on their products instead of experimenting and moving on to something else.

Is the Magnatar better than the Panasonic UB9000 and OPPO 205? I’ve got a Panasonic UB9000 I’m thinkin’ of buyin’ an OPPO 205 also like many Audiophiles for SACD? Thanks👍🏻

So, SACD & DVD-Audio can't be played by HDMI? Looking at the menus that you show, it appears that SACD & DVD-audio CAN be played by HDMI. Also, with no WiFi, how are firmware updates installed? Me, I'll stick with my Oppo players(BDP-105D and UDP-205). The 105D is still going strong and the 205 is being held as a spare.

HDMI can carry the SACD & DVD Audio signal, the Panasonic players don’t have the decoding capability but Magnetar does. Firmware installation happens via wired Ethernet

is the video quality in OPPO UDP-205 better than the MAGNETAR UDP-900? What do you think? You know we can’t find this OPOO thing for sale at a good price since everybody is talking about it on the internet, and I believe people need to move forward to support another brand. I feel the MAGNETAR UDP-900 can do better in video quality since OPOO is sort like HTPC due to continual mods being added.

Upgrading from the Sony UBPX700 to the Panasonic UB820 was huge for me. In addition to the better HDR implementation mentioned, I also stopped having disc read problems entirely.

@@ReZel80657Exactly. Apparently, that’s because region free players are not “legal”, but for the price this unit costs, they should let you install the special firmware for free when you connect the player to the Internet to download the updates.

The start menu is an exact copy of the old Oppo player. I wouldn’t be surprised if they bought out some of the software from Oppo.

Hi 👋🏾, I don’t know your budget but Denon, Marantz, and Yamaha all make great 7.2 channel AVRs. The Cinema series from Marantz is highly regarded so is the Anthem MRX line so if your budget allows with could be a great choice. Yes, this player has two HDMI connections so it will work with the AVR great!

I bought it in October as a present to myself for my birthday. I wanted the Panasonic 9000 but I couldn’t find it as a universal (region free) player where I live, so I got this one instead. Honestly, I didn’t like it. Maybe the postman damaged it, because it is noisy (the sound of the fans is loud), and the discs are hot when removing them. I prefer my cheap Sony player, which is silent and cool even in summer. I wanted to upgrade as Magnetar allows you to add subtitles from an external source and play discs from all regions. I regret my purchase, not worth the money.

Even with my poor eyesight, I can still see the difference. Great review very well done.

link says the 900 is out of stock...I own the OPPO 205 and the set up menu on the 900 looks the same as the 205 and the 205 has two DAC ESS E 59038 Pro with dynamic range of 140 DB...what a shame OPPO stopped making them The 900 looks like a great machine and hope you enjoy it, as the sound would be fantastic with That DAC pro 28 ! Plus it does have the 38 pro for two channel stereo!

Very true. Thou this player is mainly aimed for those who are audiophiles and those who wish to stream 8K videos. Plus able to Play any CD or Disc in the world. ( Unlike Panasonic which only support 5 out of 20 disc types out there) And it's able to output to a 200+ inch TV while normal 4K Player are usually capped at 120 inches ( unless it's a projector)

Some players have ways around playing Region B discs for example. I have a Panasonic UB9000, and if I play a Region B disc that doesn't load, all I do is press Stop then Top Menu and it works

Not sure what it is actually. No I haven’t purchased it.

Way overpriced they are smoking the good stuff woo lol 3k and doesn’t even support hlg hdr ? Also does it even upscale ? Or be able to optimize hdr 10 ? Like the Panasonic the spec sheet doesn’t say

It does not have an HDR optimizer. It does upscale but the upscaler in your TV maybe better.

Roon? How does the dac compare to standalone DACs?

I didn’t do any back to back tests with a stand alone DAC but I found them to be clean and precise. I didn’t notice any coloration.

Does the Magnatar have tonemapping? Is it defeatable? Did you compare with Panny enabling HDR optimizer? To me it looks like a case of Panny following the correct EOTF and the OLED clipping the brighrlt colors while the Magnatar tonemaps it down.

The HDR optimizer was off for the comparison, I wanted to as close to the same as possible. With the optimizer On, I found the colors were slightly more saturated so I couldn’t see the flower petal mentioned in that scene.

What would be the advantage of getting this instead of a UBP X800m2 player?

Way more settings available to tweak a perfect image for your needs than on a SONY X800M2. But you can have that with a PANASONIC UB9000 too.

You will see around a 30% improvement across the board and able to play Any CD, Disc, or Media file in the world while X800m2 only support 5 out of the 20 Media platforms out there.

Do you think the magnetar UDP800 looks better then the Panasonic as well?

I haven’t seen the 800 in person but I think I like the Panasonic 820 design a little better.

Didn’t have the 900 only the 820.

Oppo real ones for that motion backlight on the remote.

Sadly...even with the upscale model it's missing the Oppo's best feature.... HDMI IN. For someone with a state of the art all-analog system like me, that's imperative to get any digital signal into it... Android box, video game system, etc. NO ONE...for whatever reason has managed to duplicate that feature yet! I made it pretty clear to Magnetar support that this is it needs to be added and I cannot upgrade my 205 until that happens.

I have a new Cambridge CXUHD that I’ve put about 5 hours on, to make sure that it works. It’s boxed back up now as I just don’t have room for it currently. This is a great video, Cody.

@@HomeTheaterHobbyist Unfortunately, they no longer make them. Cambridge was taking OPPO’s highest end player at the time and modding it to Cambridge’s specifications. When OPPO shut down, so did Cambridge’s production of the universal players. Mine is a “NOS” new old stock that I bought right when production had ceased, so I still got it at the normal price.

7 time the price of the panasonic ub820, and minimum better picture quality, that you want notice wend a movie is playing, unless you pause and compare the 2 picture with the players, not hard to figure out which one to buy, plus th P player is trouble free....

Is it multi-region?

It's not inexpensive but it's solidly built and will play just about any format 😁

I find it funny when the Reavon came out, every one poopahed it and got no love from KZread reviewers. Ones that did all said too much money. Magnetar comes out and all of a sudden they are the player to get. Never mind using the exact same video chipset that Oppo and Reavon use. Never mind the top two models of Reavon can play SACD and DVD-Audio. Never mind the the top model has both XLR and 7.1 DACs Never mind they can play network music and video files. Admittingly the Magnetar does look like it uses nicer components inside and have seen it supports BDMV folder play back and iso. Just makes me laugh at all the hate Reavon got. Oh well I love my Reavon X200. Going strong since Aug 2021.

Reavon makes a nice player but no Auro 3D support for spatial audio makes it a no-go for many. Magnetar does support Auro 3D and the Auromatic upmixer for spatial audio is our favorite listening mode...especially with multi channel SACD"s, DVD Audio, and Blu Ray pure audio formats.

I own the Meg 900. Really like it, BUT, I just experienced my first major problem. New 4k disc , purchased through Amazon; TWISTER, will not exict the disc menu. But no problem with my oppo203 player. Have you encountered this problem with the Meg 900?

I think the guys who made the Oppo had a big hand in this. While I'm thinking this is probably a fantastic player the multi-color front panel is hideous and a little too quirky to me.
