The Beno travel guide to London

Ойын-сауық

I have made this guide after seeing a load of guides to London which talk rubbish. This is a proper guide to London, and unlike other travel guides it does not full of tourist attractions.

Paying for toilets is wrong, it is a natural human (or any animal) process and you can be arrested for doing it in the street, so pretty much pay or get locked up. The highest fee I've seen is in the Lake District at 40p!

Heathrow might get all of the over-priced flights, but I love Heathrow Airport. All sorts of lifts and buses everywhere. Water is ludicrously expensive in New Zealand as well, and Milk too (which is ridiculous considering we have a huge Dairy industry). On my Vlog channel, I make a series called "Wellington Wonders", where I make videos about things I think Tourists would enjoy if they visited Wellington. I do cover the main tourist attractions, but I also look other areas outside of the city that people don't go to, because they don't know they exist.

The Science Museum is also one of my favourite London museums. They’re doing a new gallery on Medicine which is due to open in 2019. I do like the British Museum as well, with its collection of Ancient Egypt and Roman objects etc... Harrods is just a very overpriced tourist trap. Winter Wonderland (which runs from late November to just after New Year) in Hyde Park is just the same. I often hear from friends that have been to Winter Wonderland that although it’s free entry, it’s very crowded (especially in the evening), damp and muddy, very expensive refreshments and if you want to go on the Ferris wheel or ice rink, you HAVE to book time slot tickets in advance. Don’t waste your time and money going there [Winter Wonderland].

Top stuff, but needs an update for 2023, Beno. Here are a few of my tips/advice when visiting London. . . Getting in to London - Always check online before you travel in by rail. There have been a LOT of National Rail strikes this year and they look set to continue, so you really don't want to end up being stuck there with no train home. Also, if at all possible, visit London on a weekday. More stuff is open, the trains are a lot less crowded, and most tourists swamp the city at weekends. If you go in by train, just make sure your train is timetabled to arrive after 9am, or you'll be charged an horrendously high Peak Fare. It's also advisable to leave London before 5pm, to avoid the rush of City workers on their commute home. Crime - Sadly, there is a huge amount of knife crime in London these days. Sadiq Khan has FU*KED up the City, big time! Be very aware of anyone who's got their hands, or one hand, constantly in their pocket or has mysterious bulges in their trousers (No, not THOSE bulges!). Shopping - There are a lot of smaller, specialist outlets if you know where to look, and often on the outskirts of London where rates are a bit cheaper. Always do your research online first. If there's a particular kind of item you're looking to buy, a simple Google search will throw up loads of independent shops in and around London that are well worth a visit, will very much appreciate your business, and you're more likely to get exactly what you want, or to find a hidden gem. Tube tip - If you're on a particularly crowded platform, you don't have to jump on the first train that arrives and cram in like sardines...especially on hot days. The trains are so frequent, it's often a better idea just to wait a minute or two for the next one. Toilet Update - Most of the National Rail stations (Marylebone, King's Cross, Euston, etc..) now have FREE use toilets. One big improvement. However, if you do happen to find a toilet in a bigger station that STILL charges a fee, just hop on a train and use that for nothing (check it's not about to depart first, though!). In Central London and the City - If you're reasonably physically fit and/or have time to spare, weather permitting, it's a great idea just to have a WALK when you're in Central London. There are lots of windy streets, hidden alleys, leafy green spaces and tucked-away shops that are crying out to be discovered and explored. It's almost impossible to get lost, and if you do panic, there will be a Tube Station not far away or failing that, you'll always be close to a bus stop. For some ideas of walks in London and beyond, I highly recommend the delightful John Rogers' channel ( www.youtube.com/@JohnRogersWalks ) in which he has many, many videos of walks in and around the City, to give you some ideas.

Beno, if you can afford it, GO TO RUSSIA. Its amazing! The airport lifts are ecodisks (some generics) but the tower blocks are incredible, with awesome 70s/80s KMZ traction lifts with DC motors and loudish 2speed levelling. And I won't know how you'd like modern tower block lifts, but they are also KMZ lifts and have great acceleration. And the metro system has awesome old trains and even with manual operation, they can run trains at 30 SECOND INTERVALS!

I guess bottled water is expensive because they "source it" from "various mountain springs", which is supposed to make it more unique. Don't like Ryanair much; maybe some of our airlines here might be one I'd chose to get here (if I ever do so, which is unlikely at the moment)

It is perfectly legal to own handcuffs in the UK. My brother bought a genuine proper pair from a party shop. It is assault if you use them though.
