The sanctuary of the Madonna del Perello is nestled in the mountains of Bergamo (Italy) and offers a magnificent panorama of the entire valley. The bell tower houses seven bells, two of which are the originals from the 16th century. After the restoration of the bell tower and the addition of the five new Bianchi bells in 1930, the historical bells were moved upstairs. The bells are fully manual and are tuned in A-flat major.

The video shows two ways of ringing the bells. Festive ringing consists of striking a wooden keyboard, similar to a piano keyboard, where each key on the keyboard corresponds to a single bell. The striking of the key causes the cable connected to the clapper to tension and the bell tolls. The combination of the keys composes melodies as on a piano. The second case is similar; the three smaller bells are still played on the keyboard, the two larger bells are played on the move.
On 2 July 1413, a peasant had a Marian apparition, which triggered the construction of the famous shrine in the middle of the mountains. The initially sceptical population believed the man when an olive branch sprouted from a withered beech stump, which is still preserved in the church and has flourished ever since. Between 1400 and 1600, three churches were built on top of each other, all perfectly preserved with the wonder of their beautiful frescoes. Between 1637 and 1721, the sanctuary was chosen by many bishops as the preferred place for spiritual exercises. The upper sanctuary was extensively remodelled in the 19th century, tripling the size of the church, which fortunately retained its original 17th-century façade.

Great video, love how these massive bells can be played like keyboard, the engineering, great to see the youngers generation still showing interest, that's awesome about Italians, they respect their culture and ancient customs and keep them alive ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

A wonderful corner of Italy is one of many in this beautiful country. An interesting old church and unique ancient frescoes. Exquisite bell ringing, the variety of which is provided by a carillon-type keyboard and talented improvising teenagers. The history of this church is also interesting. Many thanks to the author for the pleasure of watching !
