The bells of Saint Joseph in Intra on the shores of beautiful Lake Maggiore
Tradition associates the foundation of this church with the passage of Saints Julius and Julian, the two brothers sent by Emperor Theodosius at the end of the 4th century to evangelise the pagan valleys in Italy. The church was rebuilt twice, most notably in the 16th century, when the brothers named it after their saint Joseph. There are two churches dedicated to the same saint in the two main villages into which the town of Verbania is divided. In 1822 the cemetery of Intra, which once stood near the church and Lake Maggiore, was moved around the church.

In this video I was invited by one of my best friends to make a documentary about the bells, which were rung in the morning. I woke up at 6 a.m. and arrived at this beautiful place, with very rainy weather. I climbed the narrow bell tower, where there are three bells in B-flat major cast in 1842. The three bells are reached via the very creaky wooden staircase with a few missing steps, which leads up to the top of the tower where there is the original wooden keyboard.
The first official historical documents date back to 1123, when a church was consecrated to St Mary in the middle of cultivated fields. The church had been built over another church that had been abandoned at the end of the Middle Ages. The brotherhood restored the Romanesque church and embellished it during the Baroque period, preserving some ancient historical traces. On the site of the oratory, a stone axe dating back to the Bronze Age was found, while a Latin altar dedicated to the forest god Silvanus was incorporated into the Baroque high altar.
