The Beginner Guide Of The Pickleball Backhand Roll

Спорт

Hello everyone. Welcome back to the Cliff Pickleball KZread channel. In this video, I'll present the beginner guide to the Pickleball Backhand Roll. Pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in the country.
A backhand roll in pickleball, also called backhand flick, is typically a dink volley that uses speed, spin, and power to catch an opponent off-guard. Used in dink rallies, the shot borrows techniques used in table tennis to achieve a topspin effect on the ball that's challenging to return.
The backhand roll is taken from a shot in the non-volley zone that comes in at about net height. It’s best used when the ball isn’t high enough for an overhead smash onto your opponent’s side of the court.

Introduction: The Pickleball Backhand Roll is a crucial shot that every pickleball player should have in their arsenal. This shot allows you to control the game, especially when opponents target your backhand. In this comprehensive guide, we will break down the key aspects of the backhand roll, including its importance, mechanics, paddle technique, when to use it, and three effective drills to master this skill. 0:19 The Reason the Backhand Roll is Important to a Pickleball Game: The backhand roll is a game-changer because it helps you counter opponents who often aim for your backhand. By mastering this shot, you turn your perceived weakness into a strength. It allows you to dominate points by keeping opponents on the defensive and controlling the game's tempo. 0:50 The Mechanics: To execute a successful backhand roll, start with your grip. While some players use an Eastern grip, you can experiment with other grips like continental or semi-Western. The critical aspect is early preparation. Set your feet and ensure a low base. Position yourself so that your chest is over the net, and you're ready to strike the ball at shoulder height. This low base allows you to hit the backhand roll effectively without leaving the ball too high or getting caught with straight knees. 1:46 How to Hit the Ball with Our Paddle: Proper paddle technique is essential. Keep your paddle face flat and slightly closed to create a roll effect. The key to this shot lies in your forearm, not your wrist. Avoid using your wrist, as it tends to pop the ball up. Instead, lock your wrist and utilize your forearm to generate the necessary topspin. This technique ensures control and accuracy in your backhand roll shots. 3:08 When to Hit this Shot: Timing is crucial when using the backhand roll. It's most effective when the ball is above net height, offering an opportunity to attack. Use it to target your opponent's feet, especially when they are at the baseline or in the transition zone. Keeping opponents deep with the backhand roll puts you in a favorable position to win the point. 4:18 #1 Wall Drill: To practice and refine your backhand roll, start with the wall drill. Open your paddle face slightly and roll the ball into the wall, focusing on generating topspin. This exercise helps you get the feel of how to roll balls that are coming downward, similar to a third shot drop or reset shot. 5:14 #2 Ball Toss Drill: For more dynamic practice, enlist a partner or coach to feed balls to your backhand. They should toss the ball with an impression of a third shot drop, simulating game scenarios. Practice rolling the ball back into the middle of the court, honing your ability to control the shot's direction. 5:56 #3 Target Drill: The target drill adds precision to your backhand roll. Set up cones about 3/4 of the court's distance away and have your partner feed balls to your backhand. Your goal is to consistently roll the ball into the designated target area. This drill helps you develop accuracy and ensures that you keep your opponents deep while avoiding over-hitting the ball. Summary: Mastering the Pickleball Backhand Roll can significantly enhance your game. Understanding its importance, perfecting the mechanics, and practicing through drills are essential steps in adding this powerful shot to your arsenal. With the ability to control the game and keep opponents on their toes, the backhand roll can be a game-changer in your pickleball journey.

Thanks so much for this! I’ve been trying to learn it and all I hear is you have to switch to continental but I just feel super confident just playing in eastern even with backhand shots. Gives me the confidence to be able to learn this shot without overthinking changing my grip. Keep it Up!!

Can you use this technique in a kitchen firefight when both players are at the nvz? Or should you only use punch volleys?
