The Beeching Axe, 50 Years On
Here is a quick video remembering 50 years since the start of the Beeching axe, where many lines up and down the UK where lost for ever. The location of this abandoned line and LMS 20 ton Brake Van is between Radstock and Frome, Somerset. It was only abandoned in the early 1980's when the wagon works at Radstock closed. All the non-abandoned photos and clip have been take of rail tour or on persevered railways, like the GCR and AVR.
I have create a very similar video for my Photography final piece, which had to do with story telling. Sadly that video was a music video, so I create this documentary style video for uploading. Hope you enjoy!

Brilliant film to watch its a shame its all gone
Saw that video Sir of the abandoned line and the BVan. Left the following comments on KZread: Loved the video. Old times merged and juxtaposed with as it lies today..nostalgic. Things so full of life at one time now irrelevant... decaying. Tha brake van is a matching stock (as we call it on the Indian Railways) with CBC coupler on one side and chain type on the other. A thing of beauty is joy forever.
I have just seen this fine video for the first time. it is so helpful in making us realise just what has been lost with so called progress!

That was very professionally done, loved the old shots fading into the modern. I think the photo of the van with the door partly open was the most vivid image of the whole vid, like a forgotten skeleton rusting away on a track to nowhere. Ian
Big cheesy grin. Not because of the derelict railways but for the plans to re-open parts of the line. Excellent video and hope the re-opening happens sooner rather than later. It would appear the railways are beginning to make a come back. Station fairly close to me at Corby opened recently after much public lobbying and is proving to be a huge success. So there is hope we may return to a semi-decent network in the future.

Wil Davis and which bit of history are you forgetting? Yes, that's right the stated of Britain's railways in the 1960s with passengers and freight leaving the railways for the roads, just like it did to the canals when the railways came along. Many of the stations on the closed lines were not close to the villages they served, for example itvwas a 2 mile walk from the centre if Kimbolton village to the station that served it. Even when the station was within the village, the village would be too small to produce much traffic of any kind.

LOL! Of course! LOL! I did! Yeah, there was! I watched it too! Funny, I started this for my photography before I even realised it was 50 year since the Beeching axe. So I timed it well!
Thanks mate! LOL, yes it is. I had to get a lift over there, I should be learning to drive, but you can probable guess where my money goes! LOL! Yes, it is quite unique it has a three link coupling on one end and a knuckle coupling on the other. It was used as an adaptor wagon for Radstock Wagon Works, to allow older locos to connect to more modern wagons (or the other way around). The chassis by the looks of it is in pretty good shape, shame about the wood work.
As a kid in the 1950s I lived in Cambridgeshire and steam railway engines were to be seen every time I went near a railway line, trips with my parents from Swavesey to the sea side at Hunstanton by train always pulled by a steam engine. To get to my mother's parents at Icklingham involved a train from Swavesey to Cambridge and from Cambridge to Mildenhall all pulled by steam. Nun of the railway lines I travelled on then exsist any more but even so at the age of 69 it only seemed like yesterday. if these lines had been mothballed instead of being ripped up only days after closure I am shore that by today they would still be up and running again not by steam but either by diesel or overhead 25kv electric.
@neiloflongbeck5705
4 жыл бұрын
And sho would have paid for these mothballed lines? Don't forget at the time the Beeching cuts were being out into effect the country was on its knees economically after 13 years of economic mismanagement. Hatold Wilson stated the national balance of payments deficit run up by the Conservatives was a mere £400 Million. However, after the election it was revealed that the deficit was £800 Million. This lead to 3 years if runs on the Pound and the Labour government spend all the country's foreign currency reserves and most of the bullion reserves trying to defend the Pound and protect the economy. In the end they were forced to devalue the Pound by 14% against the US$. The country couldn't afford all of the rural branch lines that were under used and they had to go, a process that started under the Big 4.
If it's still physically there, would it be fairly easy to clear the foliage and test run the rails to see if it's still good? Demand for rail travel is going up now.

Yep, all still in place. Though the embanks look like they need a bit of work, a few little land slips. Apart from that it's all very much still in place.
The main obstacle o reopening railway lines is the local authorities, who want profit today, not next year. WherE I live we have several railway lines re-openable, but everyone wants someone else to foot the bill, and put an end to the horrendous congestion on our roads. On top of reopening the lines, railway stations need rebuilding (they were demolished at the time) but we have a chicken & egg situation; no lines = no stations, and no stations = no lines. Oh for a big win on Lotto! I'd die a multi-millionaire courtesy of railway investment. But can I find backers? Of course not because they all want a 10% return by Friday.

"The main obstacle o reopening railway lines is the local authorities, who want profit today, not next year." In that case the "main but one" obstacle is that the "right of way" in many cases are lost, and in quite a few places the railway land is "redeveloped"; viz. built over by other (and scarcely more necessary) structures. This makes reopening of railway lines and stations more complex and expensive than it should have to be. At least in the USA they have the sense to utilise a "railroad bank" which to a considerable extent alleviates these concerns.

Thanks! It is a shame nothing has been done with this line! It is almost prefect for preserving. It has over 5 miles of track (nearly all of it is still in place), a wagon (needs a lot of TLC), a station at Radstock with a massive yard (platforms are still in places and there a still some sidings) and it has a connection to the main network at Frome! Why no one has I saved it I do not know, the council just argue over weather to build house on it. Sad.

The preservation movement has allowed railways to be preserved in aspic, to be remembered as they were in a bygone age. It has also allowed for a load of locomotives and coaches to be restored not to mention great film locations.
In all the books I have read is says 'axe' plus if you search 'The Beeching a' the first search that comes you is 'The Beeching Axe'
How come the track remains?
Interesting. I live in the City of Niagara Falls, and there are disused rail tracks all over the city, plus dozens of acres of defunct marshalling yards. N.F. is above all a border city, with two rail bridges (one closed) to the U.S. What a scene it must have been fifty years ago.
Progress so called can often destroy the past which sadly has happened in the video I have just watched. Cheers Greg
probably way to far out of the box at the time. Just think if all these tracks had been turned into cycle, walking paths. I remember the time well. The magic of walking old railway lines. Even better. I am from Cwmbach ,Aberdare. We used to walk regularly through Merthyr tunnel. Too late now. So much trackbed built over destroyed.
I remember doing a roof job on the old chapel in Kilmersdon in the early eighties and seeing one or two goods trains trundling past, sad to think it's now just another reminder of shortsighted political decisions. Thanks for the video

+Alasdair Clift There could be new proerties built for them to move to. And that wouldn't mean the government under Corbyn having to explode nearby hill ranges that are impossible to build and live on, or exploding mountains to do so. There are many private housing estates being built that could be earmarked for them as well as other new private estates for new first time buyers moved from council estates. Not all of these new estates need to be for new first time buyers. But of course those moving to make way for old lines re-opening would still be compensated in full for doing so.

SDJR7F88 If they were profitable, someone would have reopened these lines. Duh. Not every mile of abandoned track can be a tourist line. We lost a lot of railway lines too in the US without any government help. The private railroads closed the branch lines one at a time over a period of decades whenever they lost all of their freight customers. Cars and lorries have taken over the local freight business, and giving long distance business a solid soon d challenge. Do you ship via DHL or do you use a train? Even shipping by bus has taken a hard hit by the challenge of air cargo.
@SDJR7F88

Yes, agree there. Though this line has been tide up in red tape for a number of years. There has been lots of talk about housing, over hear housing is massive money and a very quick way for local councils to make money. A preservation group tried to save the line many years back, but was turned down due to this. They then went on to save another line in the middle of no where, which only services a single village. This has become a very, very popular railway indeed. Hear is it not really about money, but the future. The road over here need lots of work and are getting jammed. This line could, serve as a transport link weekdays. Thanks to it's mainline connection at one end. And a tourist line at the weekend. To bring in money for the locals. There are the people willing to make this happen and people that want it too. It's just the red tape stopping them :p

+SDJR7F88 - it was a financial exercise to save as much money as possible, parts of the West Country and South Wales were almost cut off as many people did not have cars at the time and public transport was only 9 to 5, the government of the day saw road transport as the way forward and hundred's of miles of motorways were built, now several lines are been reopened each year as we are encouraged not to use our cars..

Think some of the point at Radstock were taken up and used, as part of the new houses going up there on site. As for the rest of the line, it's still untouched. Some room was left in the new development for a new platform, just in case a new rail link is put back in, so the line can reopen. I certainly hope this happens, as it just a waste to let it rot, and the two towns around it grow to rapidly.

And also that idiot Churchill who put us back onto the Gold Standard in 1925 at the pre-WW1 level causing an economic depression? Oh, wait that will mean Lord Halifax would be made Prime Minister in 1940 and we'll surrender to Hitler's Germany without ever fighting the Battle of Britain. If it hadn't been Beeching it would have been someone else. Beeching effectively saved the railways and introduced container trains and MGR trains. Many of the stations lost were nowhere near the villages they served, such as Kimbolton 2 miles away from the village centre, and as such litte served (Kimbolton would only have 6 very busy days a year - at the start and end of each school half-term with the pupils from the public school there travelling to/from home).

Shahed MC Beeching was never a Minister, he was chairman of the British Railway Board. Marples was the Minister.
I'd love to go on these tracks with a handcar & save the brake van too

LOL! I bet you could get quite a distance on it, but you may need to clear a few little trees and bushes first. I certainly hope they reopen or preserve it! As it would be such a waste to let it go.

It's chassis is in pretty good nick. I'm sure it is worth saving.. Plus it is quite unique with the 3 link on one end and the knuckle on the other.

SDJR7F88 I saw that!! Why do it have a knuckle coupler anyway?? Thats just bizzare even for UK Railways
@SDJR7F88

Well all modern stock has knuckle coupling. This brake van was converted to a connector wagons for the Radstock wagons works. With new wagons arriving and old diesels working the line the old and new stock could not couple, so she was converted so they could couple. When the last train left the line in the 1980's she was facing the wrong way to be coupled up, so she was abandoned.
very sad very very sad

Hopefully the abandoned line feature (the Radstock to Frome Branch) will be reopened one day.
1963: The end of the line Richard Beeching's brief as chairman of the British Transport Commission was simple: "Make the railways pay". British Rail was losing £140m a year when Dr Beeching took over the commission. His solution, announced on 27 March 1963, was equally straightforward - massive cuts. The Conservative government welcomed the report, but thousands of people - many in remote rural areas - were horrified they would lose their local branch lines. Opposition from the pressure groups failed and during the 1960s "Beeching's Axe" fell on 2,128 stations and more than 67,000 British Rail jobs.

Jack Sugden you forgot to mention that he also decided that the railways were to concentrate on bulk and long distance freight operations including the MGR coal trains and containerised freight from the ports. In addition to this Britain's economy was failing. 1963 saw the first run on the pound that would plague the economy for the next 4 years until the Pound was devalued in 1967. The causes behind this werecthe economy policies followed by the Conservatives during the 1950s, which encouraged overmanning, a lack of investment by business (and not just the nationalised industies), and falling productivity (and nut just because of industriak action).

Local people in ''remote'' areas voted with their feet,...they had long since jumped on buses or got into warm, cosy cars so as to get from A to B. Branch lines became obsolete, effectively preserved, heritage lines before their time. Railmen must have seen the system dying before their very eyes....where were all the passengers?

Neil...yes the Cons. continued Attlee's socialist agenda not least reducing unemployment by shifting people off the dole into all those vast, rust bucket, loss making state industries. Massive, unsustainable wage bill soaking up vital, crucial cash to invest in said industry. Thus, no profits and so no money to invest into new plant and machinery to improve productivity. Another crippling disaster was the 16 day rail strike in Dec. 1955,...passengers had had enough, it was the last straw and they then got from A to B by other means. Today, UK suffers poor productivity thanks to mass low skilled immigration, again,...why invest in super, efficient machinery when you can get by with the cheapest of cheap labour....and often subsidised by wage credits and benefits. Madness!

Dr Beeching, the name of the man famed for the closure of many railway lines in the uk

SDJR7F88 oh thanks. i was getting confused. I thought it related to a process or some sort of technicality with regards to the British railways.. If i could ask another question....why were so many lines closed down. I mean railways should not just see profit and loss like any normal company but the general welfare of all the people of the country should be there aim, so there could be small stations where traffic is very less but it does help some people travel and commute from villages to towns and cities and hence should be kept open. This is purely my view.

Short thinking I guess. The people in offices could not see what was happening out side them. Saw the railways were at the time making a loss, and didn't think about what they were used for in the first place. Ironic, as many have been reopened since, and this one featured is trying to make a comeback too

"This is purely my view." Not just your view. I think that that's the view of everyone that's neither insane, evil nor ignorant.
Frome has a mainline connection from london Paddington so next time I am going on a LONG trip I may have a little look. It has potential. I am sure it could be a preserved line yet
This is a disgrace... Not the video, the closures. It's quite a shame!

David Frankal Thanks mate! Glad you enjoyed my go at a creative video on the subject. The Radstock to Frome like, with the abandoned track and wagon is still like it today, the Brake Van still in place. A great place for a good walk. Plans are a foot to re-open the line, which will be amazing if they go ahead! Would be a great line indeed! Glad you enjoyed!

Not a appropriate comment
I know. I hope the council don't build house on it like they plan.
Why heap all the blame on Beeching? The Policy was that of Ernest Marples, Minister of Transport and ROAD builder extraorinaire. So far as the S&D was concerned, it was the ready compliance of BR (WR) that sealed its fate.
Who disliked this? Beeching?

Mark francis a time that never actually existed.
Unable to understand what was the gain by closing this many stations and lines. Lost jobs and connectivity. Beeching must have been a fool to suggest something like this and the govt of the day must have been the biggest fool

@ Alot of the closed lines were closed based on just ONE visit, carried out in the middle of the day....when the line would be at its quietest. Had they made several visits over say a three or even six month period, and made them in the mornings and late afternoon's I bet only half of all the lines closed would have actually closed. The rest would still be in use and active today. Very sad. No proper research or studies done. Corners were cut and the whole thing stank. It was all done far too hastily. I suspect this was because Beeching would have been under alot pressure from Marples to give him answers quickly. Marples' distain for the railways was well known. He just wanted the lines with less traffic closed...and closed quickly. So they were....in a matter of weeks rather than months. Short termist thinking and no foresight whatsoever.
Thanks mate! The location is in the description, it is between Radstock and Frome in Somerset. It is sad to see a line with such a potential of being preserved left to rot. Nearly all the track is still in place over the 5 mile (or more) length, platform and some sidings at still remaining at Radstock, mainline connection near Frome and of course the brake van! Shame the council just argue weather to build house on it.
