I am an undergraduate studying music, and for our history requirements we had to learn chant, study the parts of the Mass, and learn religious polyphony up through the 16th century. I'm at a completely secular and very liberal university as well. My reaction was like what you discussed- "why did no one tell me about this, my beautiful Catholic heritage?!" I was astonished and overwhelmed with the richness of our tradition, and a bit angry that I'd never been taught about it before. Now I want to go into sacred music so I can help open that door for others. Edit: Wow I didn't know this was relatable to so many people haha. Thanks y'all

Loved what the cardinal said about putting ourselves in God's presence before we start praying. I get terribly distracted during prayer and I've started doing this recently. It has helped. Specifically, I imagine Jesus physically walking into the room and sitting next to me. This seems to keep me more focused than just imagining myself in a general holy atmosphere, so to speak.

I downloaded the Rosary recited in English by Cardinal Burke. It took a bit of hunting and I found the Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious. I follow these when I say the Rosary in English.

Sadly, this gem is behaving in a modernist manner by overstepping himself to declare that others are outside the Church and misrepresenting the Societies position regarding VII. Burke is a modernist. Perhaps not in outward trappings, but in his mode of dissembling and misleading, absolutely.

Ordination Mass’s are incredibly beautiful and (from my experience) reverent. I believe everyone should experience at least one. The Chrism Mass is my favorite. I was blessed in being able to see Scott Hahn and his wife Kim being knighted and damed. I don’t even have the words to explain how incredibly moving that mass was. I love the way Cardinal Burke stated we need to be loyal soldiers. Well, said! He and I have similar favorites with regard to devotions. Who knew? 😀

A relevant question would be to ask Cardinal Burke to explain his declaring the SSPX to be outside the Church while they are demonstrably in the Church. Another relevant question would be to ask His Excellency how it is that schismatics are to be praised for teaching the truth of the Catholic faith. Those are pertinent questions that would expose Cardinal Burke as a fence rider who is going beyond himself in declaring others to be outside the Church. Shameful.

@@pl6168 they are irregular in status. So I don't think there's a black and white answer. Their formation is far from cut and dry in nature. I don't pretend to understand it enough to go against him or say, Fr Hesse who has a completely different answer than Cardinal Burke. But I don't see how Cardinal Burke is a fence rider. He has tried to keep Church authority honest for as long as I've known of him. It wasn't shameful. He is to be supported in his efforts even if we don't always agree with his analysis.

@@ashleymarrero3751 Burke is a fence rider precisely because he goes out of his way to misrepresent the SSPX and canon law. An irregular status means that there "is" a status. That in itself indicates that the SSPX is inside the Church, but suffers from an irregular situation. One doesn't need to pretend to know more than Burke to "go against him." Catholics are within their rights, and I believe encouraged by VII documents, to exact FULL teaching and clarification from Princes of the Church. (Seeking the fullness of truth is a matter of justice.) So, while your 'experience' may have been to view Burke as completely in line with the authority of the Church, he demonstrably steps outside the authority of the Church when "he" declares the SSPX to be outside of the Church. Burke's subsequent praise of the SSPX for promulgating the fullness of TRUTH in Catholic teaching subsequently undermines his position. In essence, Burke is saying that Catholics can rely on hearing the TRUTH from an entity that 'he' declares to be outside the Church. (That makes no sense and, on its face, is seriously disturbing for a Prince of the Church to say. For in so saying, Burke is declaring that the TRUTH is divided, being both inside and outside the Church. That goes against traditional Catholic teaching right there.) Burke is intellectually DISHONEST and is misrepresenting the authority of the Church while decrying the supposed disobedience of others. (Relying on sheep such as yourself to follow along for fear of being out of their depth.) As for supporting Burke in 'his' efforts, NO. Burke's dissembling makes it impossible for me to support him. He isn't representing Holy Mother Church but rather a phantom of his creation. The man is showing that 'his' efforts are in line with division and calumny. Burke covers himself with the supposed cloak of 'full-communion' while making false claims about the very group that is struggling to clarify VII documents with Rome. One could easily sit down with Burke and declare him outside the Church for publicly dividing Catholic from Catholic with false teaching (that is a WILLFUL misrepresentation of canon law and the position of the other party he seeks to defame. Burke does this while, out the other side of his mouth, pouring out empty praise.) But, honestly, if Burke is so certain that the SSPX is outside the Church, why isn't Burke leading the charge to exact clarity from Rome about the selfsame VII documents he feels it's okay to disparage as unbinding? Is he afraid of being called a schismatic? (Is he afraid to receive the same scandalous treatment he dishes out to others?) Why doesn't Burke follow through with the corrective actions of his Dubia instead of letting it go and DOING NOTHING? Actions speak louder than words. And thus far all Burke seems to be is talk, talk, and self-absolving talk while he calumniates other Catholics with actual skin in the game. That's shameful and an utter waste of Burke's being a cardinal.

You don't host a Cardinal everyday. Bishop Strickland, bishop Barron, bishop Athanasius Schneider or cardinal Pell next!

@@michaelbelmontes4046 Bishop Schneider was sent to investigate SSPX for the Vatican. His recommendation was that the confusion be cleared and that the SSPX be vindicated. I forget which I saw that on, but if you search KZread it is on here with the Bishop, though I cannot recall if it is the same one Taylor Marshall interviewed Bishop Schneider and the Bishop explained why it would be silly to think them in schism when the pope allowed them regular faculties for confession, etc... That is not extended to schismatics. It's interesting. I recommend looking at it, but then praying.

I also see how they follow the laws of authority, always appealing error to the next higher authority. No catholic is excused from knowingly following ANY leader into sin. Thanks for the Info. @@michaelbelmontes4046 That's what makes His Excellency overreaching his position to declare something that is patently false a problem. (Burke is scandalizing the faithful.) An irregular status, which is what the Society has, is a status within the Church. Cardinal Burke's stonewalling and refusal to engage the whole of canon law and context when assessing the SSPX situation bespeaks of a hidden agenda, a divisive agenda. Burke's recognition that not all aspects of VII are binding is precisely the position of the SSPX. (They do not propose tossing the whole council out and the Society absolutely acknowledges VII as a council, contrary to Burke's erroneous statements.) Sadly, the good Cardinal is himself guilty of disobedience to the Pope and the magisterium when he attempts to assert that the Society is outside the Church. The man needs prayer and correction.

It would be awesome if you could get Fr. Purdy on stream. He's a very faithful SSPX priest, direct and honest.

I haven't finished watching this, but I can tell you that I attended an Old Rite Mass that he celebrated and I felt like I was with a St Athanasius type saint. But I also attended a Mass with Bishop Schneider and I felt like he is an even more holy and great prelate. I do expect both these men to be confessor saints God willing. They both have incredible patience and serenity.

@@bernadettegalvin7768 Cardinal Burke is promulgating falsehood when he sifts through canon law and the whole truth to pronounce, in error and without authority to do so, that the SSPX is outside the Church. The anecdotal, back handed compliments that he lays on the Society in an attempt to appear 'understanding' to the their position is a ruse. An irregular status is irregular and indicates, quite clearly, that the Society does have a status "inside" Holy Mother Church. So saying, Burke causes division by speaking otherwise. First: He negates the whole of the truth to simplify his chosen 'position' for his audience, one he presumes will follow his words without questioning them. Second: He implies that Catholics may expect the truth from the SSPX and solid catechesis. (But how is this possible if the Society is in schism? That statement alone gives rise to confusion within the flock as his statements do not align with reality.) Third: Burke states that the Society acknowledges the Pope, but does not accept papal authority as pertains to themselves. (The individual making these statements is demonstrably rejecting papal/magisterial authority as pertaining to himself. Burke's continued calumny of the Society that is part of the Church is a form of disobedience, and worse, purposeful DISINFORMATION. He uses his position as a means to propagate his chosen error. Burke's body language and stumbling over himself to apologize because he knows some SSPX adherents who 'think' they're inside the Church is truly disturbing. All-the-while, Burke is styling himself as the man in the know. Meanwhile, Burke is the man who only talks and derides others while doing nothing himself. He has said previous that he is afraid of causing schism. Maybe that's why he's speaking out of turn. But, honestly, his untruths and overreach are causing schism because separating faithful Catholics, one from the other, is at the core of schism. It's past time for Cardinal Burke to get a pass wherein he speaks unchallenged in his false statements under the shroud of parsed tradition. He may well afraid of schism. But one doesn't lie and do evil that good 'may' come of it.

It just hit me, in some way it's quite amazing that normal people have such access (even if not completely direct) to Cardinals and Archbishops,

@@ArchetypeGotoh Yes, Burke insists that the SSPX is outside the Church. (13:00) This is demonstrably false and goes against the whole of canon law and Church teaching. (Burke then asserts that there is much good and TRUE Catholic teaching that comes forth from this group he has falsely declared as being outside the Church.) Burke is speaking out of turn, again and again and again. Why? To give the pretense of tradition? The man consistently contradicts himself, asserting that GOOD and TRUTH are issuing forth from schism. (That's what he's saying.) Burke is also offering those he considers less knowledgeable a dumbed down, over simplified version of canon law. The "automatic excommunication that comes via making bishops without papal mandate" SHOULD BE unpacked in truth by Burke. Instead, he uses a label to falsely accuse others of being outside the Church while using those same others to clarify aspects of Vatican II documents that Burke himself, around 2015 I think, admitted were not 'binding.' So, how is it that Burke can continue to purport that 'he' is in full communion when he insists that not all of VII is binding??? How when he points an accusatory finger at the SSPX that is going to wall in an attempt to get that clarification of (binding vs not binding) from the Vatican about Vatican II documents? Burke's oily exercise in fence-riding and false accusation is nauseating and demonstrative of the same behavior exercised by modernists. His yes is not yes. And his no is entirely gray, unless it applies to him. Burke also raises a total straw man by indicating that the Society insists that the whole of VII be thrown out. The Society seeks clarification of what is binding and what is not.... and they're willing to suffer the sling and arrows to do it. Sadly, Burke keeps firing, maybe in an attempt to gird up his weak response to the call of duty. @@pl6168 so I’ll admit I’m not very familiar with SSPX, and it’s clearly an important issue to you, so asking my questions might only make you upset, but i don’t think the Cardinal’s words in this interview deserve the malice you seem to attribute to him. Directly after your timestamp he says he is very hopeful for reconciliation, he didn’t speak poorly of Lefebvre here, he did cite a particular example of an incident which the Church declares as breaking communion with Rome (even if it’s more on a technicality than malicious intent to form a schism). You say the Society wants clarity; i say Burke also wants it, which is why he published the Dubia, so why can we not see him as being “on the same team” in the search for clarity in truth? I would also say that protestants think that they’re Christians, and I’m supposed to think that too, and they tell people to read the Bible. If Jesus says “he who is not against me if for me”, ought i to think that their promotion of the Scripture is a way that Truth and Good can come, even if out of a heretical group? Not that their heresy is a cause of Good, but we must still be able to say that God can use them to bring about some Good in spite of their obstinate denial of other Truths. Like Jesus on the Cross; his laying down his life isn’t ‘good’, but it did bring about the redemption of mankind, so good can still come out of evil. And we are all of us broken and ignorant in some ways, so that’s about the only way we can expect God to use us, either :P

@@pl6168 I’ll also say that i attend the TLM a often as i can, a joy i can almost entirely attribute to Lefebvre and then Benedict XVI, so I’m certainly not against him by any means. I happen to think he’s right, when he asked how the ordination he received can be invalid when given to another. I don’t know how the canon law works for ordination, so perhaps that’s too simple a formulation for the question, but i want all Catholics to be able to receive the traditional Mass, and i think Burke here says he wants that too

I greatly admire His Eminence and thank you for doing this interview. I will say that his opinion about the status of the SSPX is not in harmony with what the Church has continued to say, that they are part of the Church/within the Church but in an irregular canonical status. One can look back at the comments (some recent) from the former office Ecclesia Dei, now part of the CDF

Man think if him, and Strickland were in studio in person... We need to help fund that.

Look at the reality.

What is also interesting is that Burke himself declares that not all VII documents are binding and yet he attempts to paint the Society as being 'outside' the Church for having that same view. But the Society is attempting to DO something to obtain clarity on those points with Rome. Cardinal Burke, meanwhile, misspeaks. He falsely claims that the Society is outside the Church and that the Society doesn't accept the Pope's authority as concerning themselves. Meanwhile, Burke fails to accept papal authority by over-speaking the pope to declare the Society as outside the Church. (Funny how Burke can disobey for 'reasons' yet others can't have legitimate reasons.) As to the ongoing 'debate', well, it's great that someone is having it, struggling to get clarity, while those like Burke point fingers and declare others as being outside the Church.

@@pl6168 agreed. Those that say the society is outside the church are often either misinformed or have a personal vendetta IMO. The Vatican has labeled it as an internal matter and therefore not in schism, although it is obviously a unique canonical situation. I’m not sure which category cardinal burke falls under, which is sad because we need more cardinal Burke’s not less but I believe he is off the mark on this issue.

@@greypilgrim1649 It is sad and sorely suspect to have Cardinal Burke continue to divide the flock from the truth and tradition by misusing his position in this manner. Truly disheartening and divisive. Again, I've heard him speak about his being afraid of schism. That, to me, is the crux of the issue as he seems so afraid of causing a schism that he's willing to cause his own schism by parsing the truth and looking to externals that he himself denies. (His over-speaking Rome to declare without authority is nothing but what he accuses others of doing. There was/is an ongoing crisis in the Church when +Lefebvre acted as he did. And Burke cannot absolve himself of recognizing that by feigning holy obedience while being disobedient himself and subsequently riding the coattails of the very one he would tag as schismatic.) But Burke's misinformation is idolized by outlets such as CM who take great delight in whipping up the sheep while extolling their own supposed virtue. It's sick. Much like the title of this podcast (Beauty of Tradition) unless the 'tradition' being referenced is intentionally keeping others in the dark and, perhaps, in their respective places. SMH

I'm certainly no expert on this subject, but it's probably for the same reason that a catholic could receive Orthodox Eucharist in extreme circumstances. As long as the sacrament is valid, there may be situations in which one could receive the sacraments outside of being in official communion. That's just my guess though.

@@jack_skeean Maybe you're right, but I've read documents by Catholic prelates, including Cardinal Ratzinger, saying that the SSPX's irregular status is an "internal matter." To me, that wording suggests that the SSPX is in the Church. Though I'm only a layman, I disagree with His Eminence partly because I've read many comments from other prelates who also disagree with him. There's a big difference between the SSPX and the Eastern Orthodox. The SSPX's members are orthodox Catholics and the Eastern Orthodox are schismatic heretics.

@@williammcenaney1331 The reason the SSPX has not been granted jurisdiction is precisely because it is not orthodox. You can't reject documents of an ecumenical council and be orthodox. That doesn't mean the SSPX is heretical either. There are levels of unorthodoxy that are not as grave as heresy.

@@vituzui9070 Pope Francis gave the SSPX priests jurisdiction, so by your reasoning that would imply that they are orthodox. Remember, Cardinal Burke says that Catholics don't sin by going to SSPX Masses. Why would he imply that we may go to those Masses if he thought we would learn heterodox doctrine there? Think about how absurd his position is if he supports Vatican II's ecumenism. He would say that although we may attend clearly heterodox non-Catholic services, we should avoid SSPX Masses where the celebrants insist that they're orthodox Catholics. But he already knows that in 1928, Pope Pius XI condemned ecumenism and forbade Catholics to go to non-Catholic services because if we go to them, we suggest that we believe their doctrines. Pope Francis assures us that his ecumenism doesn't diverge from Vatican II by even a centimeter. Strangely, though, after Alexander Choogawell (phonetic spelling) threw the Pachamama statues into the Tiber, Cardinal Burke praised him for that. Francis, on the other hand, wanted those idols returned to the Catholic church where Alexander found them. So now Francis approves of something Pius XI condemned. Does that mean ecumenists are orthodox because they believe what Vatican II and the current pope tell us about ecumenism when ecumenism has already been condemned? In Maortalium Animos 10, you'll read: "10. So, Venerable Brethren, it is clear why this Apostolic See has never allowed its subjects to take part in the assemblies of non-Catholics: for the union of Christians can only be promoted by promoting the return to the one true Church of Christ of those who are separated from it, for in the past they have unhappily left it. To the one true Church of Christ, we say, which is visible to all, and which is to remain, according to the will of its Author, exactly the same as He instituted it. It’s hard to see how anyone who would want to suppress the Latin Mass is being inspired by God. Some of the most holy priests I know are SSPX and as his eminence said it’s clear how much good work they do for the faith. The situation regarding their relationship with Rome is very unfortunate for want of a much better word.

Could you get Jesuit priest Thomas Reise on so that he could explain his position with regards to the mass? I don't agree with him but I am curious as to why he thinks what he thinks.

You are absolutely correct that the Latin Mass is the more beautiful; if i hadn’t been invited by a Dominican, i would never have known only was an option in America, which only deepens the feeling that i was VERY NEARLY (and maliciously) deprived of the liturgical and cultural heritage of the Church 14:15, to hell with that Judas Priest and suppress again the Jesuits of this is what they’re doing...

The Roman Church has never formally stated that the SSPX is out of communion. I am saddened that His Eminence feels the need to proclaim these very faithful Catholics to be schismatic.

2 months went by and Traditiones Custodes was instituted.

It would stand to reason that the Lord God Who is the Creator of all beauty would choose to make His Church divinely beautiful as well.

And will have Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre & the SSPX who kept the TLM!

Please devote an episode (unless I missed it) to discussion of adoration of the holy eucharist. I have never doubted Christ's presence in the blessed sacrament. But I don't understand why so many saints and faithful Christians treasure the exposition. If one can only see Jesus by faith and not by the eyes, if His face is hidden behind a semblence of bread, then what is gained by looking? If I cannot look into His eyes or see His human form, how does seeing Him bless me? It seems I am with Him as much when He is locked in the tabernacle. Honestly, I struggle intellectually with the whole concept of eucharistic adoration. Though I know Christ is present, both in the blessed sacrament and with my soul, I do not hear Him. In such physical form, I cannot embrace Him in any interpersonal way, except to consume the Host during Mass. I attend adoration to place myself at his side, deaf and blind, connected only by prayer. Any help or prayers are appreciated.

Its a mystery but we know the Lord is present is a completely unique way and sitting in prayer with the Blessed Sacrament is transformational. As well as being a spiritual practice with a long tradition in the Church. You can't dissect the spiritual reality, just do it and you won't remain the same.

@@frankpontone2139 I have been years studying these things, documents, rites, canon law. So, we can have a largue discussion, nevertheless .. listen these men, study seriuosly. and the most importante. WATCH THE REALITY.

It seems to me they did not respond to the dubia to suggest that there is a diminishment now of the importance of theology at this time in history.

Do you have an email for business inquiries

I do enjoy the Latin mass, but I also see the value on the norvous ordo. It would be awesome if the parishes did Latin mass every Sunday for one of the mass times. I'm grateful to have several parishes around me including the archdiocese in Detroit that still have the Latin mass.
