Algebra I on Khan Academy: Algebra is the language through which we describe patterns. Think of it as a shorthand, of sorts. As opposed to having to do something over and over again, algebra gives you a simple way to express that repetitive process. It's also seen as a "gatekeeper" subject. Once you achieve an understanding of algebra, the higher-level math subjects become accessible to you. Without it, it's impossible to move forward. It's used by people with lots of different jobs, like carpentry, engineering, and fashion design. In these tutorials, we'll cover a lot of ground. Some of the topics include linear equations, linear inequalities, linear functions, systems of equations, factoring expressions, quadratic expressions, exponents, functions, and ratios.
About Khan Academy: Khan Academy is a nonprofit with a mission to provide a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere. We believe learners of all ages should have unlimited access to free educational content they can master at their own pace. We use intelligent software, deep data analytics and intuitive user interfaces to help students and teachers around the world. Our resources cover preschool through early college education, including math, biology, chemistry, physics, economics, finance, history, grammar and more. We offer free personalized SAT test prep in partnership with the test developer, the College Board. Khan Academy has been translated into dozens of languages, and 100 million people use our platform worldwide every year. I am 52 and have sucked at math in general all of my life. Having viewed this video only one time, the relationship between programming languages and algebra suddenly became distinctly clear to me. The proverbial "light came on" per se... Thank you sir. I now have a much greater understanding of algebra and it's concepts.

Suddenly, watching this video stress free, without worrying about the "complexity" of it, relaxed and chill, it was so easy to understand. Thanks to you. Thank you!

I cannot express enough gratitude (Huge Thanks!!) for both, your enthusiasm and your (attempt's at) elaborate efficiency in sharing the slew of academics I have learned through you thus far! I had monotone and worse, truly unknowing persons that "taught" math in my younger inner city education, so I am beyond refreshed to continue my self education and more (Soon hope to test higher, then finish my bachelors & beyond.)with your brilliant and inspiring tutelage and assistance . Thank You for working tirelessly alongside the amazing folks at Khan to create something special. This video btw had a passionate and wow level finish! ;)
I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart Khan cause I know without your help I know I couldn't do this with out your help.

Intelligent and a talent for teaching. You are a Godsend.
I like the speakers deep voice :)
I think maths in itself is one part of the universe and is an extension of logic. But like science it is just one way of describing the reality we name in the scientific way. For example knowing the forces of motion, heat and pressure will give you no idea or emotional insight into what it must be like to give birth or feel joy. These experiences happen and writers, poets and religion might attempt to guide us through. For when we ask questions like what is the point of my office job? What is the point of having children? Why are we here? Are we alone? Science shrugs its shoulders and ignores the question.

+Simeon Banner What if I told you that the brain is so poorly understood that "emotion" is just too complex for us to describe currently? We can already force emotions with natural and chemical substances, so it's preposterous to claim that emotions are in any way different from what science describes currently. In the who knows how distant future the billions of neurons and synapses in the brain will have been made sense of and we will be able to trigger any emotion we want at will.

I think algebra should be taught in grade school. I think kids could understand it just fine once they're able to do multiplication and division and basic fractions. If they can understand and use a conventional ruler, they can understand a number line, zero, and going in a negative direction, etc.

But as for the video discussion, the Greeks were almost fanatical about the mathematic and cosmic (or universe) relationships. I think it was perhaps religious-like for them. Walt Disney studios, back in the 1950's, did an excellent animation story about the Classical Greek culture and their "thing" for understanding the cosmos (or attempting to) through math. That animation is on youtube. It's a must-watch.
Mind blown. Ive been trying to get a grasp on this since high school; finally the puzzle is pieced together. I thank you.

I remember watching this video 4 years ago, back then I thought Algebra was the hardest thing one could learn. Now, I realize nothing is hard to learn if we try :)
I love this guy's voice, and his lessons are easy to understand, but I think what will make me remember most - other than if I was taking notes or whatever- is the fact that he says everything like five times before he moves on.
Of course I find this guy after I've completed middle and highschool. Well atleast i know he will help me in college. Physics playlist I'll be there soon.
All the intelligent comments are making me melt! I love it!

You're amazing. I love learning, so school doesn't satisfy my needs, so I looked on the internet for a mathematics channel, and I am so glad I've found you :)
beautiful.. I never thought math will be this fun..
The quote in the beginning is so powerful, I feel it's much more powerful than most understand.
its beautiful, i couldn't imagine life without it.
when i was a kid, algebra was never explained in such a cool way. most of the teachers just introduced the concepts without explaining their relevance. thanks, sal. this is more akin to what i was getting at with an older question: "why does it matter?". i think every teacher should play this vid ,before going beyond basic arithmetic with their students.
You are an inspiration! Thanks for all you've been doing.
I'm 21 now and going back to study for my continued education. I never learned this in US public school, but somehow passed.
Make more of these kind of videos! It's very encouraging.
A decade after high school and this stuff can make my head hurt. Hard to comprehend I was really good with algebra a decade ago. A decade without using it can lead to forgetting. Looking back, I should have found some way to use it. If you are still in high school or are just out of high school, don't think you will remember everything unless you actively try to use what you know. Don't let your knowledge fade. Doesn't take long. I'm purposely trying to remember what I once knew and with just one decade, it bothers me that it's so hard. I was so good with algebra and geometry at one point that I was top in my school. Then when I got out of school, I failed to use algebra or geometry. Now it is all a blur. Almost like it was some weird dream.
Beautifully simple & enlightening, THANK YOU!.
This really helped man! Thanks
Thank you Khan, you made me love mathematics
Thank you! Have a nice year!
So has every math teacher I've ever had. My best math teacher was my U.S. History teacher...
this if fascinating, please continue with more vids like these that help foster a deeper understanding of mathematics.
I'm 50 years old. My school days are over. I had a C in Algebra when I was in high school. It was very confusing to me and I just couldn't grasp the concept. I always thought Algebra was a waste of time and had no idea what it meant until 5 minutes ago after watching this video. I have very poor social skills and need repetitions to help my brain process information. This type education would be perfect for people like me. Students who have access to Khan's Academy videos are very blessed and fortunate.
What an awesome introduction to mathematics/algebra.
I keep coming back to these simple mathematics and physics videos even tho I am in my candidate physics program(2nd year ). Getting past calculus is great but, once you get to university level of mathematics and physics the inspiration feels different compare to the beginning of algebra and calculus. The inspiration in university level mathematics and physics isn't as direct as first starting out with algebra & calculus. It feels more like goals that you want to strive for example getting to differential geometry, don't get me wrong it is more then enough to keep you going :) The feeling i get from watching these beginner videos fills me with more of a pure inspiration, it feels like I just want to do mathematics/physics rather than working towards a specific goal. Which is such an amazing feeling to get when you are stuck or when you get that sinking feeling that you are lagging behind. Anyway... Great video to say the least :)
Thank you khanacademy, i'm just so greatful that you are helping my son so far!
