15 years ago, I took my first lesson in a 172. Shortly after, I started learning to fly sailplanes as well. I loved both the complexity of powered flying and the sport of soaring. Something was missing though; I couldn't quite find it. I watched 3 hang glider pilots fly in to our sailplane field after a 30 mile XC flight. Drove away everything packed up on the roof 30 minutes later. A week later, I booked my first hang gliding lesson at the beach, and it's changed my aviation career forever. I found that missing serenity, excitement, and engagement I couldn't find anywhere else. After years of flying, Nikolay Anischenko and I finally made a video that captures what words can't explain.

Cool Story Ian. I I had been flying 152/172's for several years, then in 1985 took a intro-ride on a sailplane. We landed in a field and then I watched in awe as a hang glider landed nearby. The sail plane instructor asked if I wanted to go up again; I was like, "whatever" as I ran over to meet Ken Brown. My life changed forever at that moment.

When I was a kid, I dreamed of becoming a fighter pilot and flying cool jets. It wasn't meant to be because of my medical limitations. The only chance for me to take to the skies was a hang glider. Years later, due to simplified medical restrictions, I did become a 'many-things' pilot. I flew more than three dozens different aircrafts including piston and jet airplanes, gliders, helicopters, and even trikes and paragliders. I like to fly everything, and I find each category interesting in some way. But none of all the aircrafters I've flown have given such a natural and pure feeling of flight as a hang glider. The hang glider was and still is my lifelong love. I'm thankful to fait that I didn't become an airplane pilot right away. Maybe I never would have paid attention to this strange construction made of rags and pipes, and never would have experienced the true feeling of flying like a bird. This feeling is impossible to imagine nor put into words...

I did the exact opposite. HG for years in the mountains, then sailplanes, then SEL, then not interested. Now retired, I know what motivated me. Going to fix that!

This is the best hang gliding video I've ever seen, and probably the best one in existence. I don't know the HG pilot or the drone pilot, but they've both done an incredible job on this. So very, very well done...it is breathtaking. This video needs to go viral. It needs millions of views...If enough of us share this on our social media, it might take off on it's own. If we can get it out there, I think the video itself will do the rest. I have no connection to the video or the people who made it, I'd just love to see this go big time, and if it did....it might do a lot for a sport that I love. Think about it....and share it.

That is such a classic glider! I knew that I recognized it from many photos in the mag from years back, and watching on FB (without the comments) I was like "wasn't that John Heiney's glider or someone like that? he used to do some of the best HG photography and aero..." couldn't quite remember, and there was his name when I came to watch it here on YT. That's John's custom Predator, the successor to the TRX. Still an iconic looking outline. Really made a special video I think: the old and the new, still badass, still pushing the limits.

Great video. About 27 seconds in there is another HG and I think it is John Heiney, famous HG designer and aerobatic pioneer who held the world record for number of loops by a HG in a row from 1988-98 (52). At a Villa Grove, CO fly-in he flew toward the LZ, did three loops in a row and nailed the landing. Great HG flying and, as always incredible filmin by Niko, the Only drone pilot I trust flying around me and my HG. jj

Absolutely awesome flying! Air to air work like this is the way to really get the full feeling of being up there flying and you're doing a fantastic job of it. I remember from my days of flying sailplanes that the coolest sensation came when you were flying next to another sailplane or when a red-tail hawk decided to fly as your wingman for a while. Seeing that other flyer out there "swimming" through the air next to you and soaring over the earth with you makes it more real, more alive.

I mostly fly then for a more "direct" contro than a single suspension harness, but not necessarily for going fast. "Balling up" into a drive with a cocoon, I don't think is necessary with topless hang gliders.

The image of John Heiney looping a UP glider on the cover of Hang Gliding Magazine many years ago will remain imprinted on my eyes forever. You can always recognize him on his sail pattern. Is he flying on old carbon UP glider in this video? I never met him and I flew Crestline for ten years, a student of Rob and Diane, but he will always be an HG god to me. Great cinematic, I wish I'd get the chance to fly a modern WW competiton hang glider.

@@IanBrubaker FPV range and part 107 limits make for a bit of a challenge... can’t exactly have him on launch OR in the LZ at a 3-4,000 vert ft mountain site. Unless you did it twice, filming once on each end 🤔

But digital has its adavantages, cuz last week someone has stolen my GoPro from the quad while it was beeping (i crashed cuz i lost videosignal completely) digital has way more penetration than analog, if you're behind a tree with analog, you'll loose the quad...but not with digital. Analog ist still superior in longrange flying with full line of sight signal coverage tho

Would have never occurred to me. FPV photog. I'll try it, but not the aerobatics. In this particular example the fresh up close perspective reduces the impact of the aero. Good stock for still frame shots tho.

Is there anything more interesting that HG can do in aerobatics apart from loops and wing overs? Seems kind of limited compared to PG acro.

Loops, wing overs, spins, and combinations of those. It’s more limited since we don’t have brakes but the maneuvers are a lot higher energy. I certainly envy the paragliders aerobatic abilities, but love the speed and finesse of HG aerobatics.

Hard to see exactly what the "aerobatics" are, with the drone camera moving that way, in a sense both glider and drone are doing "aerobatics", leaving us, the viewers, not quite understanding what is going on.
