love to see it, i always enjoy when people talk about HxH's incredibly gritty look at the world for a battle shounen. It's such a small scene, but the one that shows the east gorteau dictator having long gone to safety and just happily smiling stuck with me more than i thought it would. Just gives you that feeling that the ant's are at worst a distraction from the far worse horrors that await and really the expedition team were sent into clean up a small mess in the bigger picture. The nihilistic undertones of the chimera ant arc is something I really appreciate because you just don't see it in many shounen, even if some people found it to be too long or depressing.

The ants are initially build up as this existential threat to humankind and by the end they were only rated the third on the catastrophe scale the Hunter Association uses. It really drives home the point that humans have been commiting attrocities against our kin for far longer than the ants, and they haven't even gotten the time to catch up to us.

You know, at 11:10, I can’t help but point out a thing i haven’t seen anyone else point out . In the Chimera ant art, there are actual reference to real life photos they use as a reference for how they juxtapose humanity. One of them is a picture (shot by Eddie Adams) of a distressed Vietnamese man (Nguyen Van Lem) getting shot/having a gun to the head by an army cadet during the chaos of the Tet Offensive in the Vietnam war. It’s a famous photo along side others of the series and while it was very brief during the speech about the cruelty of humanity , I saw it in the anime at 12 I was really taken aback by it and really sad. The arc truly was a mirror and critique of humanity and our reality indeed.

I doubt gons story is over, it didn't seem like a proper ending while sure gon found his father he still doesn't understand his father's earnestness to leave him and his mother to become a hunter, there was also a lot of cliffhangers towards the end that points to a timeskip where gon and killua meet up again, this start of the new kurapika story is only an inverse of the start of the series people don't realize that because they only watch the anime and a lot more happens in the manga that has significance that wasn't flashy enough for the show

the first thing that made me think hxh is not a regular shounen is the moment when gon is too scared to fight hisoka. it's such an unusual thing for anime protags, they're mostly fearless or would jump into the fight no matter what. but gon was just "he is scary. i don't want to fight with him" just wow

Your reflections made me think about Togashi as a real person in way that I haven’t before. He is *very* skilled and creative, and I love the story he tells, but there is more to his life than just writing HxH. When you mentioned that he is “heading out into those dark waters again,” it clicked for me that writing is not an easy task - even when you’re healthy. I’m sure trying to uncover what’s next and get everything just right can be daunting even for him. I hope he lives a long and fulfilling life full of love and beauty.

I feel a lot of people don't point out Gon and Pitou's duality! The moment where Gon actually gets tilted by Pitou is when he asks her why she's healing Komugi and she responds "I need to heal her because she's special to someone who's dear to me" and in my interpretation Gon sees himself reflected on her and that's why he ends up losing control. Just as Pitou wants to heal Komugi for Meruem's sake, Gon wanted to heal Kite for Ging's sake (even though Ging never really cared). You can even see a parallel in how Pitou offers her arm in exchange for time to save Komugi. At that point of the show, Gon had already hurt or even lost his arm for his ideals, and ends up losing his arm again at the end of the arc Loved the video btw 💖💖💖✨ it was a great analysis 💖 keep up the good work

I interpretated that in this moment Gon's head was in a lonely battle btw instinticts and humanity. He is guided by his instinticts throught out the whole series, and his choices make him belive he was in the right, that he was human by the concepts of the new society he came across and by the concept of the people who created him (His aunt and great-grandma), but in that moment he sees himself nothing but in the wrongh, showing him the world is not as simple as "Follow what ur heart desire" (Btw im not affirming who was in the wrongh or right here, okay?), he desires to heal Kite, and he knows he needs to because is the right thing to do, right? Because he needs to do something after not being strong enought to protect him, right? But then why should he attack someone who's doing the same? How is that demonical thing being kind and protective over a weaker human? Why? How? Who? That type of complicated enigmas broked him in that firts part, and it implifes even more the Arcs theme, in my view, there's the concept of good and evil. Still i loved ur interpretation of it!! Is really diff and i didnt thought about it

What's funny is HxH was completely unexpected for me, I started watching it on a whim because I thought it was about dudes hunting monsters like Monster Hunter and for some reason that's what was on my mind. I never got spoiled as to what it was or who wrote it so I was actually disappointed when I realized hunters weren't just big game monster hunters. Then I just kept watching and it uh became my favorite anime and manga series of all time so that was unexpected

What I think is great about the dualities of desire is that they, like the characters, often have their own dualities. Gon wants to see his father, but for ultimately shallow reasons (Kite told me my dad was cool, so I want to be a hunter like him), while Leorio wants money, not because he’s greedy but because he wants to become a doctor so he can cure people like his friend

Your video summarizes almost every reason of why this series is so special to me and one of my all time pieces of fiction period. The way the characters are layered, the subversions that occur, and the contrast between the childlike wonder fantasy and the heavy adult themes all contribute to its uniqueness. And I absolutely agree with you about Togashi's approach to storytelling. He fearlessly breaks conventions and allows the story to unfold naturally based on the characters' motives, which adds an element of unpredictability while still making everything feel logical in retrospect. I can't get enough of it. Your video captures all of these aspects brilliantly. Keep up the amazing work.

It took watching another analysis of Meruem's fight with Netero for me to realize the point about humans being no different from the ants. Originally my take was that Netero had resolve and Meruem was being naive and wish washy. Humanity would never accept his terms especially given the bloodeshed required. But I don't think that was Togashi's intent. I think he was making the point that Netero was a bloodknight like Hisoka and that he would have never reasoned with Meruem no matter what he proposed. Netero had convinced himself that Meruem was a threat and this was just the justification he needed to face the most powerful opponent he ever could to death.

@@mugenbop it's really interesting how Toagashi flips the script on idealized characters. Gon and Ging get the same treatment. Especially in the first arc Gon's reckless behavior amd naiveté are portrayed positively and everyone who knows Ging praises him. But we see what Gon's behavior gets him. Ging is actually hated by most of the Association and called out for being an absent father. He even just looks like a disheveled hobo as opposed his implied handsome idealized appearance in flashbacks and such.

regarding Leorio: I thought he wanted money so he can become a doctor, not the other way around? his friend died of a treatable desease when he was a kid, because they didnt have the money to afford it. so Leorio wanted to become a doctor and help people for free, but he found that to become a doctor you need even more money. its also one of the earliest points the story really got me. I assumed already that there was more behind Leorio's shallow personality, but I didnt expect it to touch me so closely. maybe its because the problem Leorio describes and the trauma he endured isnt just some cookie cutter personal drama we all know from shonen anime, but instead a systemic injustice, that we are familiar with from our own world and that screws the lifes of so many people for no good reason. I cant stop talking about this series, nor do I want to stop, its just so compelling. if you take anything away from this series about our own world, I hope its not that humans are nasty and bad by nature, because hxh also shows the absolute beauty of humanity. what I take is that the systems people erect are unjust, because they benefit themselves and reflect their privileged ideology. like Netero. while I adore his character, he's not a good person, and he implemented a cruel system of his own design, that reflects his personal values and looks down upon those he deems unworthy. whereas killua teaches us how powerful and world changing compassion and friendship can be. the "passing of the torch of kindness" as described by Alekzandr's channel is something profoundly beautfiul. its about getting rid of corrupt and unjust systems and reach out to those who are like us and can be brothers and sisters and anything in between. much love to you all

Great video! I've always found hxh's paneling especially intriguing and even unsettling at times. I will never forget the first time i read chp 90 and amongst the usual child-like drawings of the characters and buildings where machi and nobunaga are just walking down the streets, suddenly there is a creepy panel strip of realistic-looking (presumingly homeless?) children just sitting on the ground staring at you. It just came outta nowhere that it caught me off guard. My first thought was that it was creepy, but then again i think about how most people if they saw this irl they wouldn't bat an eye. Togashi's usage of inserting somewhat semi-realistic faces into hxh to create a certain atmosphere is so interesting to me. Other than the obvious ones like the covers of chrollo, beyond, morena etc, he inserts it in backgrounds and places where it shouldn't be, like when ging and pariston meet and suddenly there is a grainy realistic picture of a woman smiling on the tv, and then in pariston's explanation too. I don't see that in shonen.

hxh is my go to example of how to actually subvert expectations in a good way. I only watched it for the first time a few years ago, and it totally reminded me in alot of ways of what I've seen before. the hunter exam felt like the chuunin exam in naruto, Netero was basically Muten Roshi from dragonball, a quirky, perverted old master, who would guide our young protagonist towards his true potential ... boy was I wrong! and what hxh does right where other subversions fail is that instead of giving us what we expect it gives us something better, more compelling, deeper and more satisfying. its also foreshadowed very well, if not stated outright. Netero wasnt consciously "training" the boys, he wanted to pass boredom and have fun. when Gon slammed his head against the wall, Netero half expected him to be dead and didnt seem very much concerned about that. and why would he? the whole exam has seen people bite it by the dozens and he doesnt give a damn. and unlike in Naruto, where you could argue its about geo-political influence and thus not one person does have enough say over how the whole thing is run, this exam in hxh is Netero's doing. anyway, the final phase of the exam also shows is nasty sense of entertainment and values. then in york new we are introduced to a bunch of characters, who are quite compelling honestly, and then half of them are killed without fanfare. the others are barely even involved anymore, and its totally fine because we are at the same time introduced to much more compelling characters in the phantom troupe. again hxh robbing us of one thing only to give us something even better. and I dont have to begin talking about chimera ant ... I never in my life have so wished for a character to die so many times and couldnt wait to see them being crushed, and yet shed tears in genuine sorrow and regret when they did die. hxh is magic, pure human dark magic.

It's amazing to see how almost everyone here has their own moment in the story where they were like "wow, this is something unique", a moment where it just clicks in your head and you know this is a special story. For me, it was by the end of the Third Phase during the exam, when they were in that last room with an awful choice to make and everything pointed towards a battle between them, and then Gon just had the idea of breaking the walls to reach for the short tunnel, oh my god the little me was stunned, and I still love HxH with all of my heart, it's my favorite show ever, together with Twin Peaks by David Lynch, curiously both are very dark and surreal, but can also be childish and funny.

Minor correction: Downtown is the name of a comedy duo which has hosted like a dozen shows featuring the group's name in the title. The manga simply states "Downtown's show" is the inspiration for the name so we're kind of left to guess which one it was - probably Gaki no Tsukai, by far the most popular, longest running, and influential series even beyond Japan's borders. For those not familiar with the show, it is mostly known outside Japan for their 24 hour annual no laughing special and the recurring Silent Library series which MTV later lifted for their own American series. Definitely recommend checking some of their stuff out; it's one of those things you need to jump into and makes more sense the more of it you watch and can identify recurring jokes, characters, etc.

DISCLAIMER/CORRECTIONS: Togashi does have assistsants but based on a report, he does not overburden them with too much of his own work this rendering part of their jobs null as he places more work on himself, for whatever reason. I misspoke and did not elaborate. 2. Yes Leorio becomes a doctor to help those who can’t afford healthcare I put an asterisk “Among other reasons” for the sake of brevity and because I wanted to highlight people’s reasons for becoming hunters can be shallow and he does at first want only money when we first meet him, seeing him later do it for genuine reasons also shows the dualities of those who choose to become hunters. No diss to Leorio he is chad.

fucking. spectacular. your video has shown me another side to this series and after so many years and rewatches and watching other videos made about the series, im still finding out and discovering more. it really means a lot because for anyone else, these things would just be called people reaching and making things seem deeper and more meaningful than they ever were but that isnt the case with togashi. his world is amazing because its so lived in and rich. theres so much detail in that world thats intentional and it was ALWAYS there. it was just up to you to discover it. but all the pieces always fit together. thats how you know that the little things you find here and there over the years DO mean something in the world or to the story or to the characters. well done.

Regarding the "Start Over" Tweet, it is possible he's referencing a recent Jump motion manga commercial they made of HxH that had a song called Start Over, said song is also allegedly sung by an idol group Togashi is a big fan of. Probably was listening the song on repeat then 😂

I think what I love most about Hunter x Hunter is the world. In most series battle shounen or otherwise humans are usually the most powerful thing on the planet. The most noble and good creatures there are. But HxH not only are humans arguably one of the worst creatures on the planet but they're also unimportant in the grand scheme of things. The way the Dark Continent and their entire planet is framed makes humanity just look like an utterly small and insignificant species on this massive rock where their entire home is just a spec within a spec on the face of a world that is far larger than they can even imagine. With untold horrors that can wipe them out with ease and are utterly uncaring of their existence.
