It was so good to be at Spring Fever and to see everyone.
I was there in 2001 with my twin girls who were 13 at the time. Though our main adventure was a solar eclipse safari in Zambia, we spent a few nights in Cape Town with a rental car. Just seeing the townships from the highway was shocking, they were huge. But you're right that the coast and scenery were spectacular. We even saw whales in one of the bays, from the road high above. We went to the same beach with penguins, climbed the same rocks at Cape of Good Hope, and also visited Cape Agulhas at the very southern tip of Africa as you did. It was August, so far too cold to swim with the penguins. The beach at Agulhas had literally tons of seaweed and kelp on it. Some of it was thicker than my thigh, and maybe 50-100 feet long. Which reminds me to answer the captioning challenge. "You can trade the elephant for this, or for what's behind the curtain."

Wow Bev. Epic is the word that comes to mind about this video. I doubt I will ever have a chance to personally travel there and certainly not how you did with actually drivibg yourselves. Much, much more brave and adventurous with the driving than I would be. This video was packed to the corners with learning for me. First, I never in a million yrs would think of penguins in Africa. I've always associated them with cold climates that have plenty of snow and ice. Hmm. The little moluscs crawling across the sand was way cool as well. That was very interesting. And ohhhh those trees. If they could only talk.I bet they could tell the best stories ever of what has happened in their life times. I think the first big one was possibly a fig tree or a type of banion tree, but i have to admit I'm guessing. There is a KZreader that has a cool channel from Australia. It's called Max and Occy. He just moved into a cottage in the rainforest there and he has a fig tree that resembled that first one. Anyway, I am an unapologetic tree hugger. Especially funky trees like the one you showed. They just do something cool to me when I sit by them. Like somehow we are communing together like telepathically or more likely energetically we are aligned. 😅 The baboons were funny but I would be leery of them because they can be unpredictable and mean. I loved the seals, and think it would be cool but a bit scary to swim with them and the penguins, mostly because of their place on the food chain with some mammoth predators. The bridge walking, climbing, zip lines and kayaking 🛶 might have been fun in my younger yrs, but I'll happily be an armchair observer vicariously through you. LOL 😂. Sad as it was the housing there wasn't a surprise for me. To me it's equally sad that that kind of abject poverty and homelessness is right here in America and getting worse all the time. It's heartbreaking when the wealtiest people in the worlf could band together and eradicate it everywhere, because it wouldn't even dent there midas stacks because the cost of living isn't as high there. But even here, anyone with 300 million + could eradicate it here as well. At least IMHO it would be a start. As for a caption to your ostrich: "Ladies I know you're furigners but for pete sake, stsy in YOUR lane". Just like I didn'tknow penguins would be in warm climates, I didn't know that ostrich could live in cold climates, so you can imagine my surprise when I lived in Montana over 20 yrs ago, how surprised, no SHOCKED, to see absolutely HUGE ostrich farms out there, and Emu as well. Story goes they are a delicately as well as their eggs, on Asian countries, and so they are grown for their meat, eggs, and of course their feathers that they molt off scads of, since they grow heavy coats of feathers to keep them warm on sub-zero temps. in the winters. And last but not least, the elephants melted my heart ♥ and brought a tear to my eye for how sweetly and tenderly they were hugging you. I can't begin to imagine how you must have felt cautious, yet awed by their strength, knowing they could have picked you up and tossed you over their back like a piece of straw. Yet I can't help but feel those hugely intelligent beasts could feel your love and so were tender and gentle with you. This was an outstanding armchair trek through SA to the tip, and you did such a great job Bev, it almost feelslike I was there with you. Gonna scoot over and watch your safari now. I'm sure it's equally spellbinding. ❤❤❤

It truly was eye opening and the trip of a lifetime.
Wow! I’m so impressed that you drove everywhere. I would have been terrified. The roads we were on much of the time in Kenya were scary although our drivers handled the traffic without issue. It felt like 10% of the time we were driving head on to someone! Like you, the safaris were incredible. We did 5 keep safaris and 3 river cruises total in Kenya, Zimbabwe, and Botswana. I too was struck by the disparity among the people everywhere we were. I took tons of video just driving through the towns and “truck stops.” Interesting enough, in Soweto, South Africa we were told that not everyone who lives in the tin shacks are poor. Many live there basically rent free to send money back home to their families. Our driver also told us that much of the electricity in those shacks was stollen from nearby power poles. I’ll definitely go back! I want to see more of South Africa, including Cape Town and now I need to see those penguins! We were only in Johannesburg and Soweto. What a fun adventure! Thanks for sharing. I don’t think I could make myself walk across those bridges! And no way would I zip line!

OMG Bev, you got to be close to wild penguins!!! So darn cute! Glad you had a great travel companion! Ok, the baboons are very cool, but I think I'd be afraid of them. One of them could kill a man fairly easily. "So I'm driving along, and I had to pass an ostrich on the right cuz he was going too slow." 😂 Your stills are fantastic! Wild looking trees! The word boomslang cracks me up, but it's the name of a highly venomous snake. Interesting name for a bridge! Oh, wow, I'd love to hug and elephant! I'm sure I'd cry. They are such majestic creatures! 😂🤣 Buffalo on the bed! Rock rabbits, what?! That's a darn shame about the unemployment rate and the crime. I'm glad you didn't shy away from sharing it!. I have been very fortunate to have traveled to many different parts of the world, but it has always been my dream to go to SA. However, due to just the reasons you stated about the racial disparity and discrimination, I have never traveled to SA and I don't think things will change before I die. I'm 55 now. I've been waiting since my early 20s. It sure looks beautiful, though. Reminds me a bit of Australia, a bit of coastal California, and a bit of Hawai'i. I live in the SF bay area and Burning Man is huge here among creatives and tech people, but the rampant drug use and sex parties are not my thing, so I'm not a burner. The last 10 years or so, the cost of the tickets to get in have skyrocketed from what people have told me. Hopefully your experience with the festival there was less capitalistic and debaucherous? lol The poverty you mentioned and showed, quite honestly, this level of poverty has been around in California (and other cities around the world) for decades, and it has only gotten worse and worse and worse. There has never been a time since I've lived here ('97) that the homeless population has decreased, and most of our homeless citizens live in shelters that you would find on par with Haiti, because they won't even allow them to cobble together wooden structures. Only when the pandemic happened did you see cities providing port-a-potties for them to use. Most have no running water and no electricity, and when it rains, the tents that the city gives them become flooded (and any personal items have to be thrown out due to mold). Bev, it's gotten so bad in the US that I see we are moving more toward the malignant narcissism prevalent in South Africa rather than SA becoming less narcissistic and more like the US use to be in the 70s. Honestly, what I see in SA in heartbreaking, but worse still, what I see in the US has just become demoralizing. I was just down in LA last week, and the number of elderly spending their entire days in the libraries there is just gut-wrenching. I lived there for 10 years and I've never seen it this bad before. Even Tokyo had problems with homelessness, but after so much public posting on social media, Tokyo felt shamed into giving many of the housing instead of having their elderly live in tents cities. It looks like you really had the trip of a lifetime. I'm sure you were so sorry it was ending and you had to return. Thank you for sharing your trip online for others to enjoy!
