The legacy of Athangudi tiles dates to the eighteenth century. Expert masons produce India’s colorful Athangudi tiles-known worldwide for their sturdiness and shine. Athangudi tiles are crafted almost entirely by hand, without the help of large-scale machinery. The materials used are sustainable and have special qualities that add to the beauty of the tiles. Some 50 villages take part in manufacturing Athangudi tiles and each one uses Athangudi’s sand and water.

I can only think about the health of these women (workers if you prefer) and how hard is their work. I could never have these tiles at home knowing how they are made. I'm sure also these workers see a little fraction of the selling cost of the product.

I think like Moroccan zelige tiles, it's mostly clay. Instead of full cement. It's the Indian version and its eco friendly and quite honestly very beautiful. I intend to use athangudi tiles when I build my dream house.

@@AbdulAhad-do7cv all clay is Silica based. These workers are getting terminal lung illnesses at an earlier and disproportionate rate compared to workers with appropriate PPE and working conditions.

This has to be super destructive to their lungs. I can’t imagine how much damage is done daily.
